Class doesn't matter, as everyone can eventually do everything. The starting equipment is the important part. If you want some decent armor, go knight. If you want early access to magic or the pyromancy glove, go Sorcerer/Pyromancer. If you want the Master Key (note you can take this as a gift for any class), go Thief, who gets it for free.

The other starting classes aren't really worth it, in my opinion.

Mage. It's always easy mode. In all RPG's.

So yeah, pick the resident magic using class of Sorcerer (or Pyromancer if you must).

The Pyro is an excellent starting class.

Use this guide. It is excellent and in-depth.

Have fun!

Edit: Yes, the Pyro can use heavy armor. It takes a while to find new spells for any class.

I prefer Deprived. One gets a good set starting stats and I'm forced to play well to avoid being killed in my loincloth. Once you get out of the asylum though, it's not that hard to get to the Undead Male Merchant and buy some chain-mail armour and some decent weapons.

To all the people telling this poor guy that class is irrelevant or that the thief is the best starting class, please stop. The guy is asking for a build.

The basic mechanics rely on scalable stats. Different weapons scale better with different stats. Obviously, most spells scale with magic, most miracles scale with faith, likewise enchanted and magic arms scale with magic stat, and divine and occult weapons scale with faith. Certain weapons have modifiers which affect different enemies more.

The important things about dark souls can be summarised as follows:

A. Diminishing returns- Generally the marginal impact of stats is small after 40 (if you plan on 2 handing, strength can go to about 50).

B. Items, and spells can all be bought, but it is usually a waste buying a spell unless it doesn't scale or you are leveling the scaling stat for your catalyst.

C. 40 endurance, no more, no less (note certain magic based or backstab builds use less, but those are advanced play styles).

D. Your soul level is important for online play. You won't find many matches past about 120, which can make various covenants rather had to level.

So I guess you could say but 40 in endurance, 40 in the stat you want to play like (str, mag, dex, faith), other stats to the minimum to use gear you want (protip: weapons that have requirements above 20 for str AND dex are bad, dont use them). Rest goes to vitality, and try not to level above 120.

Have fun!

Yeah, you have to have a build in mind as the starting class doesn't matter much. I picked thief because I always like Dex-based characters in any game, I like fast and quick instead of strong and slow. I hear the master key is important to have (I'm on my 1st playthrough as a thief so I don't know how hard it is w/o said master key) so if you don't pick thief, pick master key as your gift. I would suggest using a bow and arrow if you go for a Dex-based character since the bow and arrows scale with dex. If not, I would assume the crossbows would be better if you aren't a Dex-based character. Having a bow and arrow or crossbow makes so many areas so much easier to get through that I think it's imperative to have a long range option. Then, you'll probably want to be good at some kind of magic. You can use the fire magic without any stat investment required as you level the Pyromancer's Flame to improve your fire magic. I didn't get fire magic until about the middle of the game so you will probably want to go for Sorceries (scales with Intelligence) or Miracles (scales with Faith) if don't pick Pyromancer as your starting class. I went with Miracles with my character because the Lightning Spear you get from joining the Warriors of the Sunlight covenant is awesome and you can join very early in the game. You'll want to level both Vitality and Endurance no matter what character you are making. You'll probably want to choose to be strength-based or dex-based character, do you want to use slower but harder hitting weapons (strength) or weapons that don't hit as hard but are fast (dex)? You can forgo both dex and strength to make elemental weapons but on a 1st playthrough it takes awhile to get the right embers to make those weapons. Then, you'll want to choose to level intelligence (for sorceries) or faith (or faith for miracles). You can check out the Dark Souls Wikis just to go over a list of sorceries and miracles and see which kind of magic fits you playstyle more. Lastly, leveling weapons is more important that leveling your character up.

I rented the game recently to try it out, I found the best starting class to be knight. I also found it easier to focus on making a strong melee character before adding magic into the game.

Knight starts with some really good armour so you have good equipment right away.

I picked the warrior starting biuld, then having found a spear and a greatshield, started piling points onto strength, endurance and vitality.

I stopped Gwyn's sword combo by the time i reached him, though it took me a week to get there.

Thief gets 2 gifts from the goddess, Masterkey and whatever else you chose. So that alone makes it the best starting class, not to mention if you're quick enough you'll be able to get into Blightown and join the Dragon Clan for the infinite souls glitch as soon as you get out of the Asylum.
Not that it matters, stats mean nothing in this game its all about equipment
