Hey escapists, im shopping for my first car for my birthday present to myself. I am somewhat of a gear head and greatly enjoy talking cars with friends. So, what do you drive and how do you like it? I will have a 1990 bmw e30 325i shortly if all things go well.

Really? that's funny because i drive a 2000 BMW 540i. Honestly the upkeep on it is really expensive because if anything is wrong you generally have to bring it to the BMW dealership itself.

Could that car be any sexier? I really doubt it.

Are you jealous yet?

What do you mean 'no'?

... shut up...

... but... uhm... it gets good gas milage!

It has a rearview mirror!... that I glued back on.

E30's are great cars...I've had a 90' 325is and a turbocharged 91' 325e.
Currently I drive a 96' turbocharged Miata in black. Love it. Looks great, best handling car I've ever driven, and has enough juice(180hp) to keep up with anything. I added the turbo 2 years ago and the only problem I've had are some heating issues.

The e30's were cheaper than my miata, and simple as hell to work on.

2009 Hundai Sonata. My parents bought it for me so beggars can't be choosers. Before that I had a 99 Toyota Camry.

Both are fine A to B cars with no issues but I'm guessing they'd be a bit boring for some people.

My current daily driver is a 1974 British Leyland Mini 1000. The engine is a little clapped out and I've already had to change the head gasket once, but I absolutely love the go-kart feel of it. Not as nice as the Cooperized 1986 Austin Mini I owned in Germany, but... I have plans for this one that don't involve its original engine.
Aside from that, I have my old faithful 1992 Geo Metro convertible waiting around to pick up the slack when my mini breaks and a 1968 Chevy van for when I need to move heavy things.

I'd give my old "stay away from BMW" speech, but some people have great experiences with the things. My first job out of high school was as a lot attendant for a BMW dealership, and I've seen more broken ones cost more people more money than any car has a right to.

I drove a number of really old Ford Fiestas, the first of which only had 4 forward gears but a speedo that (rather optimistically) went up to 140 :p

Basically, my insurance cost so much that no matter what I never had anything to spend on a car. So I bought fiestas for about £500 a pop, drove them for a year each, then stripped anything that was in good shape and bought another one. Having a full set of spare wheels came in handy a few times, and spare exhausts/carbs too.

Tbh as long as its reliable then you can't go wrong with an old car for your first one. It gets you in the habit of driving the limit and not taking risks overtaking and what not. Also, lacking power steering makes you learn to maneuver a lot better.

I'd suggest you get yourself an FM tranciever for you iPod/whatever btw, and keep whatever old ass stereo is in there already. Someone sees even cheap decent modern stereo in a beat up old car, it'll end up stolen. FM tranciever means it'll work with any radio and you take all the expensive stuff with you.

Oh and when you do get a nice car in a few years time, you 'll really appreciate having power steering and AC and all that jazz. If you start out with all the mod cons then you don't even notice they are there.

I'm not really knowledgeable about cars, but I drive a 2005 Ford Taurus. Can't really say much about it, it gets me from point-A to point-B.

Well thats one of those things about working in a place where you see a whole load of broken ones :p A friend of mine works in an apple store and tells everyone not to buy an iPhone, because all he see all day is broken iPhones :p

TBH all old cars come with problems. The trick is being able to tell a death trap from one thats just old. Since the OP says he's into cars, he'll probably be ok on this front.

Vauxhall corsa. But that's only because it's the car my Dad bought and insured the rest of the family on. Love it though, even if I'd like something bigger for motorway driving.

I drive a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Tsi.

It's a dependable car, it gets me from point A to point B easily enough. Which is really nice considering the ice and snow we often get here.

I am currently driving, but for not much longer, a 96 Chevy Lumina. Can't complain about it except the 200k mile engine that's in it.. Not gonna be lasting much longer. Ahh the memories, I've never been able to top it out, got it up to 140 mph before hitting gravel, that ended with me sliding sideways for about 500 feet on all 4 wheels though :p

What I drive: 1991 Crown Victoria. Retired police vehicle. Tons of power and lots of room. Sadly I'm not one of those pin heads who feels the need to compensate their minuscule genitalia with a muscle car. I'm only driving it because it was given to me and I don't have an alternative to this gas guzzling monstrosity. 19 mph, highway. Do you have any idea how much I pay for gas in this thing??

Gas is gonna hit 5 bucks a gallon this summer. Get the most fuel efficient car you can find and afford or find yourself sobbing uncontrollably at your nearest gas station come August.

Well, I'm not driving yet. Just under a month until I start learning. But I will be driving a 1.4 Vauxhall Astra (G) LS. My mothers car, mainly because it's cheaper to insure that than to buy something of my own, maintain it and insure it. Nothing special or exciting.

Will leave home next year and need my own car then, probably something similar for insureance reasons. After insureance goes down though I'd probably try get an MX-5, first gen. I'm very short, so I wouldn't look like a twat while driving it and I've heard a lot of good things about it as a cheap sports car. Dream car would probably be an RX-7 FC. Doesn't seem like that high a goal, but I just really love them.
