My first time driving was slightly frightening, but I got used to it fast. Always did have a hand for racing games...

After driving 120 miles a day for 2 years now, driving is an extremely dull routine. You'll get used to it.

Heh. Not as scary as flying - especially when you're solo on approach to Barton's tiny runway with bloody R22 helicopters zipping around the airfield at 50ft doing a million knots, and hearing "11 in the cuircit." Scary stuff.

Some of the scariness goes away when you've accustomed yourself to the vehicle, but there's still a bit of dread when encountering shitty drivers.

Okay, i have an confession to make.

I'm 18 and today i tried my hand at driving for the first time. I don't think i have been that scared since i was a pre-teen. I felt so powerless. I didn't crash or anything, and the teacher told me i did alright but despite that i was mortified.

2 years ago i stood on a podium talking to 200 people, wasn't even 1/10th as scary as this was. Neither was the time i was chased by a large dog when im my mid-teens.

Was it this terrifying for anyone else? Admittedly the ground was quite icy and you had to manually change gears on the car, but still.....
Sounds like you have a healthy bit of fear in you. Which is good, considering how bad ppl are at driving in certain areas here in Sweden. I'm from the vicinity of Örebro, and we probably have the worst drivers in the country.

You keep that fear alive mate. Not for your own sake, but think about all the ppl that don't have gaming reflexes, or those that got their licence some 40 years ago. And all the rules that are added or changed that most peeps have no clue about.

For even if you drive by the rules and common sense, it may come a moment where you have to dodge a retard in an old Volvo 740 skidding towards you on the ice.

Many needs to learn that driving does not make you invincible, and that any mistake they make can be fatal to others.
Värmland got voted to worst car drivers, can't blame em, avoid going threw here whatever you do.

I'm applying for my learner's licence theory test tomorrow, getting it just before they raise the driving age to 16 ^^ but I don't think I'll be actually driving for a few weeks... thanks for making me feel better :|

Yeah, the first few lessons are pretty scary, knowing flicking the wheel off to the side could do some serious damage to you or others, my second lesson i got stuck behind and had to overtake no less that three bikes with kids on the back, but you learn to trust yourself and your judgement with a bit of practice, stick with it is all....

Honestly I was the same way you were, and it prevented me from getting my license for far too long. I'm 27 and now I've had it for a couple years. I was mostly forced to get it because not having one was limiting job opportunities, so I sort of threw caution to the wind and said, "fuck it, I have to learn or die trying, otherwise my life is going nowhere."
Now that I've passed my test and have been on the road for a while, it's honestly not so bad.
You get used to it...trust me. This is coming from a guy who pretty much used to have a panic attack just thinking about driving.

I have been eligible for a P License for a year now, but im also scared of driving so I havent driven for enough hours to get my license. I have been on my L's for a year now and only done around 6 hours (I need 100 for my license)

Whenever I get behind the wheel my legs and arms shake and I get a massive headache. Thats why I dont like driving...

While I was a bit anxious the first time I got onto a highway (in a large Nissan Pathfinder) I can't say I was afraid. I have no problem with driving, I'm quite good at it, but it's the other drivers you should be afraid of.
That's right, you don't have control, and if someone else messes up, it's up to you to lessen the situation by acting quickly and properly...

Not to mention I have to learn how to drive in arlington... Idiots here are as common as they are stupid...

I hated learning how to drive. I spent every moment terrified a child was just going to materialise out of the tarmac and then I would hit it and blood would be everywhere and oh god somebody call an ambulance I will try to grow healing powers and then use them agh.

Not really a problem anymore, though. A childhood friend of mine was killed in a car accident, so now my mum is all terrified like a fucking overemotional moron and refuses to teach me.
I can't afford lessons and even if I could I'd have no way of getting to them. So I guess I'm pretty much fucked for the moment.

It wasnt scary, but it was a bit nerve racking when you looked at the statistics.
And to think that more people are afraid to fly rather than drive...
I know. Its the safest way to travel statistically at least.

No, it's not that scary. Sorry. What fear you have you just need to repress and keep driving until you get used to it.

EDIT: Oh, I read about the icy part. I take back what I said. That IS pretty damn scary, and the manual transmission wouldn't help. One of my scarier experiences was driving in Tahoe in a blizzard without chains because I didn't have any, in an old truck whose brakes kept freezing up. I had a couple nightmares about that afterward.

Driving's not scary at all.
Of course, I live in California. Where people drive their big trucks like F1 cars and their Honda Civics like freaking rally cars (Myself included...)

California, whose drivers were so bad that Nevada, Wisconsin, and Wyoming had to re-introduce their speed limits out of intense fear.

The first day I came back from driving, I had serious sweat stains on my pits and back, and I was in a partial panic attack. My mom made me lay down on the couch because of how messed up I was. It didn't really get much better until I got my current job. I have to commute half an hour on the freeway. The freeway used to be my own personal version of hell on earth, but now I'm cruising down the fast lane like I own the place.

So even though driving is initially the most horrifying experience I have ever had in my life thus far, it did get better. Once you start learning more about it, you won't feel so powerless. You'll feel a lot more in control and secure in your abilities.
