I was pretty scared driving at first, but after awhile, depending on how often you drive, it becomes a lot more natural, just like everything else.

Okay, i have an confession to make.

I'm 18 and today i tried my hand at driving for the first time. I don't think i have been that scared since i was a pre-teen. I felt so powerless. I didn't crash or anything, and the teacher told me i did alright but despite that i was mortified.

2 years ago i stood on a podium talking to 200 people, wasn't even 1/10th as scary as this was. Neither was the time i was chased by a large dog when im my mid-teens.

Was it this terrifying for anyone else? Admittedly the ground was quite icy and you had to manually change gears on the car, but still.....
aww i remeber that time...you want scary?

try rolling your car just as your suicidal friend tells you she think she brings bad luck

The first time I drove, I wasn't scared, but my mum was. I'd say the only time I've ever been the least bit scared in a vehicle I was controlling was when I was practicing stalls for my pilot's license, but even that wasn't too bad at all.

"NO NO NO NO NOOO, oh geez, oh man, this is not good, aw boy aw geez OK, OK I am doing this, OH SHIT nope nope I'm getting out of the car now" <-- me in the car

The OH SHIT was when I very nearly drove my dad's van into the side of a house by accelerating instead of braking. I still don't know which pedal is which. I think that scared my dad as much as me... he never finished teaching me to drive before he died, and now I have no excuse to get behind the wheel of one of those deathtraps.

Maybe I'll just make a lot of money and get to be driven around instead... that wouldn't be so bad.

I wasn't too scared when I started driving back at 17, only time I've ever felt genuine terror was my first time on a motorway. Genuinley terrified the whole time I was there, normally i'm bumming along on a country road with my music on pretty loud, but on the motorway i'm sat there in dead silence hunched over the wheel.

I now avoid motorways wherever possible and if I can't, i'm always in the slow lane. D:

I wasn't a big fan of driving either when I first started, but like anything else you'll grow into it.

well i am used to riding a bike everywhere, so the first time I got behind the wheel, the sheer power of the car scared me.

I love driving. I drive stick, but since I do not as of yet have my full licence (insurance is too much) I am stuck driving with someone else in the passenger seat. I have also driven machines and such since I was about 8.

I should also not my fastest speed ever was not in fact while operating a motor vehicle, but was skiing, 150km/h.

If you are scared behind the wheel DO NOT DRIVE.
That is all.
This was my first time ever attempting to move an vehicle that was not an moped. Do i get some kind of leeway? :p I ski quite a bit too, but i'm not very scared since it's me doing the steering.
I mean of you are continually scared behind the wheel. If you get uncomfortable behind the wheel you should at least pull over and regroup. There is nothing worse than a driver who is too scared to pay attention to the road/

I really only find other drivers scary.

The other day I drove passed Wal-Mart, the traffic leaving Wal-Mart has to stop for cross traffic. I'm driving down the road a car pulls up to the stop sign and the girl driving looks directly at my car, at this point im about 70-80 feet away. When I get about 20 feet away she decides thats the opportune time to pull out in front of me. Needless to say I left a large skidmark on the pavement because I hit the brakes so hard

I completely agree with you. The first time I was allowed behind the wheel I was sixteen, and my grandpa essentially wanted me to drive 30 feet up a mild slope. What I did not realize was how little pressure it takes to floor the gas pedal, and how far one has to spin the wheel to turn at a relatively low speed. I practically had a heart attack and barely managed to stay on the road. It's been nearly two years and I'm still apprehensive about learning properly.

I have a bike, and this city has decent public transit, so honestly I don't plan on ever owning a car.

I know exactly how you feel.

The first time I drove... well...

"Hey son!"
"Yeah Dad?"
"Take the wheel a sec!"
"Wh..what?"

If you wanna know fear hop on a motorcycle and drive into the centre of the busiest town you can find during rush hour. In cars your protected by all that lovely metal, seat belt, plastic and air bags. On a bike you just gotta hold on.

In general, no. However, northern Ontario 5 am, light barely breaking 1 M through the craziest fog I ever saw. Winding roads and freaking moose everywhere, and I kid you not a moose for every kilometer of road. I have never in my life been more on edge for 5 straight hours. Because the reality of the matter is that ever minute you are moving 40 km an hour in a steel cage your life could end, and depending on the situation the risk is relative. The thing being the worst kind of accidents on the road come out of the things you don't see, so it's completely fine to be a little edgy especially when your perception is impaired. Safe driving all boils down to physics, if you're aware of the physics of objects in motion then you know exactly what could happen.

Yeah I was pretty scared too, the fact that my dad intimidates the crap out of me didn't help either.

I've drove all of twice (once to park and once around a parking lot in a Jeep Cherokee) and I was freaking the shit out the entire time.

I know I'm going to a horrible driver should I ever get a license, but luckily for the world, when I was dragged to the DMV to get a learners permit, the State of New York knew full well that everyone I'm related to is a horrible driver and knew that I wouldn't be any different. (they said it was because I didn't have a passport and my mother with me [why would someone who's legally an adult need their mommy with them?] but my theory sounds better)
