Driving, Scariest. Thing. Ever.

Okay, i have an confession to make.

I'm 18 and today i tried my hand at driving for the first time. I don't think i have been that scared since i was a pre-teen. I felt so powerless. I didn't crash or anything, and the teacher told me i did alright but despite that i was mortified.

2 years ago i stood on a podium talking to 200 people, wasn't even 1/10th as scary as this was. Neither was the time i was chased by a large dog when im my mid-teens.

Was it this terrifying for anyone else? Admittedly the ground was quite icy and you had to manually change gears on the car, but still.....

It wasn't quite that scary for me, but I certainly don't like driving. Haven't gotten my full licence yet just because I don't want people to rely on me for a ride.

...wasn't scary for me... but I learned to handle a vehicle on country roads as a child (in a 1966 VW beetle with a worn out clutch and no gas pedal). I highly recommend starting out in the middle of nowhere and then easing yourself into city driving.

Not at all.. Driving becomes one of those things when you do it long enough it becomes instinctual and second nature, sort of like touch typing.

However, that said... One of the scariest moments I ever had was driving to Dulles Airport in DC on a saturday night. Being from a small town Ive not experienced a lot of metro driving, however I went from 2 lanes virtually empty to 6 lanes in one direction, traveling 60 mph, virtually bumper to bumper in a rented mustang without me even noticing. It was the first and only time ive ever truly been scared shitless behind the wheel.

The feeling goes away pretty fast. Being in control of a large piece of wheeled metal is pretty daunting, but don't let it put you off!

I was lucky, I did all of my motorcycle tests first and had been riding big bikes for a year before I went down the car route too.....made the fear much less!

I love driving. I drive stick, but since I do not as of yet have my full licence (insurance is too much) I am stuck driving with someone else in the passenger seat. I have also driven machines and such since I was about 8.

I should also not my fastest speed ever was not in fact while operating a motor vehicle, but was skiing, 150km/h.

Driving isnt scary at all and I got T-boned at 60 mph a week before christmas and was back on the road in less than a month. Now public speaking is some scary shit.

Getting on the freeway when I was just learning to drive was pretty scary, but after nearly a decade it really doesn't bother me any more. Just take a deep breath and relax. While accidents happen all the time, the odds of being in one are pretty small.

Puts me right to sleep. And that is why I try not to drive unless I absolutely have to. And even then its short distances.

I can't tell you how much i love driving, i'd always looked forwrd to the day i turned 17 and was able to have my first lesson. Best. Thing. Ever. I've done rally fun days at racetracks and think its awsome,

Guess its not for everyone tho.

But i have alot of freinds who are now 20, 21 and haven't even tried it, let alone have them say its scary.

Driving in Korea is the most horrifying experience imaginable.

The roads in that country are horrible, you see a fender bender at least every 4 minutes ON THE HIGHWAY, and the bikers are constantly swerving through heavy traffic at 80 MPH. Add to all that that I was driving an LMTV, a massive, 9 meter long truck, and you have a heart attack every time you blink.

I only first had an issue with driving the year I had my provisional license because just before I received it, I was in a wreck that I should have technically died from. Lucky me walked away with bruised ribs and a cut ear. That year with the provisional license I pretty much refused to practice driving. Something in me was so scared to be the one behind the wheel. It was absolutely terrifying when I started. I came worryingly close to actually pissing myself. But you get used to it fast with a bit of practice. Don't be put off by that initial terror, it's healthy! Means you're aware of what can go wrong, and will presumably take steps to avoid it happening!

The first times were a bit unnerving for me too. Back then I thought ~10 km/h was insanely fast.
You get more confident rather quickly though, and now, some years later, I am only slightly worried when driving above 100km/h, and even then it's because of reason, not because it feels fast.

I'd only say that to experienced drivers, if they still feel uncomfortable. My first couple of lessons were driving round an empty industrial estate, and when I started driving on busy roads with oncoming traffic it was nerve-wracking, but it becomes natural.

Yeah I know what you mean and I still scare of driving. I generally don't like driving either and yet I got a driving license.

Wasn't too scary.... Hitting the brakes on a rainy road, and not stopping..... that's scary.

I felt the same way when i first started to drive, most of that fear came from my fear of uncertainty. I always want to plan out what is going to happen and how its going to happen, so when I got on the road for the first time I was just so paranoid of the other drivers that I failed my first test. It probably took 2 more tries before I actually passed. Im a little more comfortable now (with only half a year of experience but still) but there are just too many factors for me to be perfectly comfortable driving anywhere

I've got my 5th driving lesson tomorrow morning and so far i'm really liking it. I only get a little tense when a truck's behind me really close. The highlight for me is going 50ish mph on the dual carriageway. Speed isn't scary at all, its other drivers that are.
