I'm writing this from the point of view of someone who very rarely will break online laws, in regard to copy right and such. I'm the sort of person who'll hear good things about a band, download one or 2 songs by them, and then, if i like them, go out and buy the album under the pretense of supporting the artist, because im sure they need the 3 or 4 cents they get from my 20 dollar purchase, all the rest being spirited away by record companies and such. with games it's a bit more difficult than that, obviously. i can understand developers putting DRM on games, because if i worked for years on something and poured time and effort into it, i would want some kind of financial reward for doing such...but why, oh why do some modern games have really obnoxious DRMs? I'm looking at games like assassin's creed 2, where the player needs to be constantly online while playing the game. which is shit. i think i speak for most people when i say that most internet connections are ok at best...and horribly frustrating at worst. everyone has the problem where their internet will randomly slow down, or just disconnect. which is just something that we all take on the chin, because normally the net is down for, maybe half an hour max? and you'd be in especially good spirits if you brought a new game to play while waiting for the internet to work -oh, wait, you cant play it yet, because your internet isnt connected, so the company that published the game can always monitor whether or not another computer is trying to use that same serial code that you have. and the irony is, the assassin's creed 2 DRM has already been cracked. i *could* download it right now, and play it without worrying about my net connection. which leads me back to the point of "why bother?" if people are just going to keep cracking these games, and getting around the DRM's, are we soon going to be playing with an official person literally watching over our shoulders making sure we dont do anything that may cost them revenue?

GAH! Wall of text... My eyes!

Seriously, if you're going to make a statement, then make it one that people will actually read.

But, I agree with you. As will most people on this site. DRM is not being done properly, and needs to either be reformed, or just gotten rid of.

I think it's just another manifestation of Executive Meddling, except instead of TV execs doing it, it's game publishers.

If you have a spare several hours you're not using - you can start Adventures in TV Tropes here: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ExecutiveMeddling

The point of truly obnoxious DRM is that publishers want to protect "their" property, but hardly understand how piracy works. That's about it.

Yeah, paragraphs are good, but to answer your question: I don't know the point of DRM. Maybe companies are actually trying to create the "Holy Grail" of DRM that is uncrackable. There's also the chance that they want to be dicks about it because if they stop using and creating DRM system, Joe-public might start thinking that software piracy is not a serious issue.

I always laugh at new DRM schemes because a fraction of that money could have gone to educating people why it's important to buy games that you like. Just state plainly that if you ever want a chance of seeing a sequel, you need to buy the first one to fund us. Simple as that. Adding constant-online DRM like Ubi has done does nothing but show the ignorance of the company itself. It's so bad that I can't tell the biggest Assassin's Creed fanboy to buy it for AC3's sake, because it's just supporting Ubi's ignorance.

The new DRM is ridiculous. People who don't have intranets can't play new games and if your internet goes down you can't play them... seems pretty unfair...................................................
