You do realise that you don't have to had just smoked pot for it to show up in a drug test right? You could have smoked it over the weekend during spring/christmas break and have it show up in a drug test. I don't do drugs but I do see an infringement on my rights.
I believe that weed lasts in your system for up to 2 weeks. Also, you don't have a right to do drugs, they're illegal.

That's not the point the government is searching you without probable cause THAT'S ILLEGAL. That and weed stays in for about 3 weeks.

No, you are right I misunderstood implied consent. For that I apologize, that was my mistake and I will own up to it. I do know however that at least in my school, at walkthrough (basically registration) we have to sign a piece of paper which basically gives the school the ok to search us and our stuff. I have had friends who have had their stuff searched randomly, I also know that certain schools do actually have random searches of personal belongings or systematic searches of every student when they come through the door. I know for a fact that on that piece of paper that we must sign to go to the school there is a line that says we must allow searches of our belongings for any reason.

My school's been doing it for a while. I don't see the problem with it.

Then again, I don't smoke or drink.

I wonder how far a contract can legally go...
I mean, schools can basically steal your belongings if they disagree with you having them, or if they think you're doing something wrong/distracting/whatever with them. I know at my school they take your phone up if it's even turned on, and if they see an mp3 player or even some headphones, then they tell you to turn out your pockets and search your backpack for anything else they don't like...

Goddamn I hate my school

Shoot, in an age where you have Metal Detectors at the entrance to schools, School nurses who would willingly prescribe Ridillin to children, and Strip searching honor students for "Ibuprofen", I think that Drug testing in schools is a little, um, Lame(?) as far as school policies go.
Ok, I have to ask- ibuprofen? I take that for migraines, I wasn't aware that it was dodgy in any way. In fact the reason I take it is because I was having to take codeine so often I was worried i might accidentally develop an addiction. Why in god's name where they searching for ibuprofen?

Back on topic, I have to wonder what they'll actually achieve with this policy, and I think that what effects it has is a more important factor than whether it's morally or legally justified. I've never touched drugs (alcohol excluded naturally), but I can't see what kicking me out of the debate club would have achieved if I had just experimented once or twice.

Extra curricular activities aren't just privileges, they're opportunities for further learning and character building. Are excluding students from them really going to make them less likely to do drugs?

And how will these tests discriminate between good students that just got curious, and habitual users that really are a problem?

ON the other hand, I kinda support the parking permit aspect of it. The car park at my school was pretty hectic, kids all over the place, and some people refuse to accept that drugs affect your ability to drive, just because they can't perceive the effects themselves. It's an extreme measure, but it potentially saves lives.

My school has this policy as well. Though luckily some teachers are more lenient than others when it comes to mp3 players during standardized testing.

You piss in a cup. I'd rather do that than have my belongings handled by a bunch of strangers. And it's not searching without probable cause. You're joining a group, that group has certain requirements if you wish to enter it. I'm no sports fan, but I'm pretty sure every major sports league does the same thing as they're proposing here and no one complains about that. Truthfully, I really don't care either way as I don't do drugs. Also I'm pretty sure on the two weeks thing, although it matters little.

They've got the RIGHT IDEA! Shun drug takers from society... and when they are excluded from all activities and certain parts of education, LET THEM spiral down their own ABANDONED path of self loathing and hatred. I mean who cares when they go on a murdering rampage through the streets of Manchester on the back of one long joyride of drug abuse.... whilst cursing the day they ever smoked that spliff in the back of 'Kellys' car (the cute little number he JUST-HAD-TO-IMPRESS) just before the final drug testing of the year. Causing his expulsion as the captain of the rugby team that he was so destined to take to THE NEXT LEVEL.

Heh... I... am somewhat disagreeing with drug testing in schools.

I don't care about the joining the group thing really, but if my kids have to attend a public school and the school demands drug tests before they enter, I would sue. I can see why they would do it for a team. Honestly though I would rather have my stuff searched than have my body searched, but I suppose that would be opinion based.

That's lame. That's basically saying that if you smoke, you're not allowed to learn teamwork/group skills and social skills.
Well, if you're smoking and you're in high school than most likely you're underage and aren't smoking legally.

God, schools are so gay, they act like they're doing all of this crap for your own good, but it's really just them showing off their big dicks. What I mean by that is, they are just doing this stuff to tighten their grasp on us and just to prove that they can do whatever they want to us. First they have that no tolerance bull crap where you get expelled if you have anything ranging from toy gun key chains to anything with "points" longer then 3 in. to REAL WEAPONS. Then there was the no hugging rule, which by the way, NO ONE FUCKING FOLLOWS! Next came drug dogs searching our lockers, in which NO ONE HAD ANY DRUGS IN THEIR LOCKERS! Now comes the genius drug test, which they will somehow turn into something retard, just like they do with ANY CONCEPT THAT COULD REMOTELY BE BENEFICIAL TO ANYONE!
god I frigging hate schools.

Drugs and violence are a huge problem in my school district. There would have to be some serious cash put into testing everyone and getting them help.

Where I'm from I think the legal age for smoking is 16 so it is possible for someone to be smoking in highschool.

Ah, the fun of this. But everyone, don't forget! If you eat a Poppy seed Bun two days before your drug test, you'll register as positive for Opiates!

Drug tests have faults and failures to them, innocent people HAVE Suffered. The idea that only the guilty need to fear the police is the most retarded lie that I've seen grown people believe.

Well, my school is full of druggies. I've noticed that the people who don't give a shit about where they are going in life are the ones that do drugs the most. Me, I don't do drugs, but we've been told that if we have to do drug test, that we can get in trouble for so much as having Tylenol in our system. Which I find to be complete bs, but it's the rule. (I would know, seeing as when my school did a random drug test, I got in trouble cause I had taken Tylenol before coming to school. I got off because I had a valid reason...cramps.)

Well you could try and sue. Don't think you'd get anywhere though. For some reason, you saying "have my body searched" makes me imagine them cutting you open and checking all your insides. It's my urine, I have no use for it anymore and I am clean, so I have nothing to worry about. Either way, the whole thing is opinion based, like pretty much everything in life.
