Before I explain, I'm not into narcotics of the sort but after reading and watching Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas I was thinking of making my own film or shorts of something similar, however I've got a few ideas up my sleeve but I wanted some more ideas.

Any suggestions? It's going to probably be dark humour.

Unicorns. The must be unicorns somewhere. Preferably robot ones that leave rainbows in their wake and destroy stars.

Fixed.

OT: What kind of film is this exactly? During their drug trip do we see it from their perspective or no? Do they just chill at their house or do they hit the town conjuring up phantasms?

Definitely from their perspective. On settings it depends, I would love to hit the town and conjure lunacy with real people in the crowd.

Watch Blur of Insanity, that should give you a few ideas. Or just get steamed for a weekend whilst in possession of a cam-corder.

Yeah you can't really write a film like Fear and Loathing if you've never actually taken any drugs, stick to what you know. Especially if it's about actually tripping rather than a trip that occurs while the protagonists are on drugs.
Either way, it's probably best to stick to something else cause you'll end up with either a total rip off of Fear and Loathing or something hollow and implausable.

hey op, my personal recomendation, as harsh or as stupid as it may sound, is that you do drugs yourself. I hate being in this position, but i seriously think that u would be fine trying drugs, if u get well documented before. U seem intelligent, and i know this sounds wierd, but the harm of drugs is vastly exagerated, and people who become addicts, either become that way because a) they have tried something strong like heroine, which i DO NOT recomend u to do (things like meth, cocain, or any sort of designer drugs, just forget all of these, thats where the real harm is), or b) because they dont have any thing to live for. So i dont thing anything bad can happen if u do the phychodelic bunch (weed, shrooms, LSD, and even DMT). The only bad thing that can happen is that you actually really like drugs, and want to do them again, which is not really that bad a thing if you controll urself. It is fine if you'd rather stay cleen though

Now, I'm not suggesting that you drop acid.. But.. Actually, I'm not getting suspended. I don't know. Watch Koyaanisquatsi.

Pretty much, if you haven't taken any drugs before than the chance of you going over the top with some scenes might break the suspension of disbelief. For example you might see unicorns running around playing backgammon if you were to do a bunch of acid however drugs like Pot, Blow or Ice (probably) wouldn't make you see anything.

If you're dead-set on making a drug trip movie the best advice I could give would be to talk to people who use these drugs on a regular basis (I wouldn't suggest doing the drugs yourself, if you aren't ready or prepared for the effects some drugs have on you you almost definitely will have a horrible night)

you also gotta remember the social impact of certain drugs, for example drugs like Ecstasy or Coke are common at large party's or raves. Drug's like Pot, mushrooms and Lsd are best suited for small groups of people and Heroin, Meth and Crack are usually done alone or with 1 or 2 other people.

The thing about the drug culture is just that, it's a culture. anyone who will watch your movie will be extremely critical if you miss even slight details. Have you ever interacted with a drug dealer? what about 'power-loading'? (eating certain foods or vitamins to help your body adjust to the drugs).

sticking to what you know will be your best bet, however relying on a couple friends or doing a little research could go a long way. Often artists write/sing/film what they know because it's easy for them to relate it to themselves and their own experiences and emotions.

and as for a disclaimer just in case: I do not condone the use or possession of ANY illegal drug.

That only applies to people who know anything about it, though.

You could make up for doing it badly by doing it really badly...go crazy over the top and claim it's a parody of anti-drug propaganda or something. You can get away with anything if you pretend you are parodying something.

How about the perspective of a tripping mind...the adventures ensue and morals and ideas and cool stuff whatever...but it turns out it was never a trip caused by hallucinogenics (which the main character thought) but an outside influence such as oh I don't know aliens, future humans, bacteria, or little beings who live in our DNA that were trying to send a message.

Then the main character gets super powers...goes mad and destroys a town...

My first thought when reading the title to this thread was, watch Fear and Loathing, and then upon reading this thread, I got ninja'd by the OP... Well all I can say is, you cannot beat that film for trippy-ness...

Also read a short book called 'Twelve' by Nick McDonell. It's all written in the present tense, which makes for quite a poetic and intense read. But read it for the main trip out scene, tis very good. (oh and dont watch the film)

Also take inspiration from all the other Terry Gilliam films there are out there, i.e Brazil, they should help you out...
