I wholeheartedly support FF4 and The World Ends With You, but I also think that Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker is worth mentioning. It's a pokemon-esque game combined with all the great gameplay of a DQ game. Also, as I say whenever I see this topic, Infinite Space, if you can find it.

Oh also the strategy fan in you might like Advance Wars Days of Ruin.

Lost Magic (if you can find it. Its a realy underrated game, even if the graphics and story feel very kid oriented the gameplay is DEEP and if you like strategy and RPG games there won't be any better blend on the DS.
Etrian odyssey if you want a realy hardcore RPG.

If you like JRPGS, I very highly reccomend The World Ends With You, as some others have mentioned. And if you absolutely detest JRPGS, like I do, get it anyway. I loved the game to bits.

It has a really unique urban metropolitan setting and art style, some interesting characters and the best combat system I've seen in any RPG on the platform. Also the soundtrack is made of awesome.

Hey,

I will probably be buying a DS lite from a friend this week (useful on the train and bus to and from uni and such) and was wondering about the escapists choice in games.

I'm a strategy fan, but looking for some roleplaying games, a bit of everything really, but I don't like the 'casual' games, wario ware, nintendogs etc

This will be my first Nintendo console.

Thanks!
Well eliminating casual removes 90% of the DS Line up. (Hence why I sold mine off and got me a PSP) but in my time of owning one I did enjoy:

Mario Kart DS
Super Mario 64 DS
Resident Evil Deadly Silence
Metroid Hunters

The World Ends With You - A brilliant RPG with a fantastic story, fast-paced battle system, and tons of style. One of the best RPGs ever made, easily. You must play it.

Advance Wars: Dual Strike - One of the best turn-based strategy games ever made. Not to be confused with Advance Wars: Days of Ruin, which was not quite as good. Dual Strike led to many a sleepless night for me.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - An entertaining and well-made adventure that takes place both in and out of court. Great story, fascinating characters, and awesome music. Plus, they actually made an awesome game out of being a defense attorney. That's awesome.

There are plenty of others, but if you could only get three, it should be those ones. Amazingly good.
