Dubbing

So I was watching some tv when I came across a familiar face: Pierce Brosnan's in Die Another Day. Since bugger all else was on the tv, I decided to keep watching that until I realized that it had been dubbed in German, and that I was looking at a german channel. Then I remembered a holiday in Germany I had two years back. I was watching the Discovery Channel and again, it had been dubbed, only this time they didn't even bother removing the original audio.
This got me thinking: why do they do this. Why do all major languages for that matter? Becasue this is not only the german, but also the french, the italians, the spanish. Also, this raises the question: aren't they missing out on some valueable language lessons in english? Granted, I learned English mostly through gaming, but those have also been dubbed most of the times. I keep wondering every time I'm in Germany (and that is quite often, since I live about ten miles from the border) Wouldn't a lot more people speak english, if they just subtitled their games and movies?

A lot of people hate to read movies. See the sub vs dub wars, though I doubt they would learn it that easily unless they were really young or trying. I've been watching anime for years and still only know a few clips and phrases in Japanese.

I hate dubbing, it removes a lot of the originality behind characters and speech. Also, I think subtitles are fine if you're a native of at least one language (which you should be).

Watching Bruce willis say "Yippie ya yay ? Schweinebacke" isn't the same.

Since i like to paint i always use dubs. But i like them. I see nothing wrong with them. Infact sometimes i cant stand subs.

Dubbing is great if I want to do something else while I watch. If I actually want to watch only the movie/show then I prefer subs. Honestly dubbing is usually poor quality and kinda distracts the hell out of me.

Also I think it'd be tough to learn a language just from that. You might pick up a few phrases here and there, but language is way too complicated to try to learn on the fly while following a story. Especially with multiple dialects and slang and such.

I don't fully concentrate when i'm watching a film.

I get up to go in the conservatory for a cigarette, I go to make a coffee or snack or whatever.

I can hear whats happening if a film is in English. If it's a subtitled film then there is very little point me watching it as I will have no idea whats being said.

In short. I watch a movie to watch the movie. I don't want to read whats happening.

If I wanted to read i'd pick up a book.

In my country we only give translated subtitles to movies and series...

Helps understanding the language better, and it's way better in quality has it are the original voices of the actors beeing heard, and not some dude with bad accent and exagerated/ hilarious voice dubbing it...

But in spain for example they dub EVERYTHING!!!... It's hard to find a spanish person that is able to speak another language... only if they live on the borders, have foreign family or worked really hard to learn a different language in school... cuz other then that you'll rarely find a spanish person that speaks another language...

I watch most in subs except a select few that have good dubs. Full Metal Alchemist for example had an amazing dub.

You guys bloody flee from the theater if you see so much as a single subtitle, and you ask why some of the other major languages in the world do the same shit you do?
[sub]That is, you normally refuse to watch foreign language films in the first place instead of dubbing them (something that isn't much of an option in countries that don't speak English), but you're wild at dubbing anime and the likes.[/sub]

That said, I do absolutely loathe dubbing.
Dubs are for children who haven't learned to read properly yet.
After you've learned to read, you may watch the film/show/whatever the way the creator envisioned it; so bloody do so.

Ditto. I"ve been watching Anime both Dubbed and Subbed(I'm not picky), but I can't seem to learn any Japanese. Sure I mean I pick up on names and simple words like yes, no, or what(What=Naw Nii). Yay for spelling fail.

IDK if i'm just mentally incapable of learning another language, but I just can't seem to grasp it. So I guess I'm saying that no, it would not necessarily help, but who am I to really say.

Most of the time I prefer subs, as to me watching an african, german or any obvious non english speaking chracter speak english for no reason just runis it for me, an exception for any japanese show I just cant stand their annoying high pitched voices and also for some i quess reading subtitles distracts them from the action.

The same reason why some people hate anime dubbing, they don't want to read the subtitle. Beside the same can be said when they dub forign film or show into English.

Personally, I'll watch a dub if it's actually good. Unfortunately, the vast majority of them seem to be awful, so I just stick to subs.

It's "yippie ya yay" in German, and you missed the schweinebacke part.
