I have Duke Nukem Forever, and, while the graphics are crap, the loading times are excrutiating, and for the first couple of hours the gamplay is mediocre, it's not that bad. I's genuinely funny at times, and the gameplay really improves about a third of the way through.

I don't understand why it's gotten so terrible reviews, and I think it's pretty good.

What do you, tink, escapists? Agree or disagree?

The game was in production for around FOURTEEN YEARS, they hyped it up massively and was mediocre, why do you think it got bad reviews??
The fact that it was in development for a long time doesn't reduce the quality of the game, it just means people expected more of it.

From what I've picked up, DNF was irrelevant and mediocre to people who like new school shooters, and a complete disappointment to people who like old school shooters. Add in a whole bucket of hype, a 14 year development cycle and there's plenty of reason for people to hate.

It's a relic, a joke, and I don't think anyone who bought it was thinking "this will be awesome!". I certainly didn't. It didn't blow me away, but it didn't piss me off. There was nothing controversal about it. It was mostly harmless.

Despite it being 12 years in development(mostly done in someones flat, if we're to believe the "behind the scenes" footage), it's still not the most disappointing game this year.

I'd give it 3 out of 5, overall. The second half is a lot of fun, but until then it's pretty boring. Also, the graphics and loading times are a bag of crap.

pretty sure you answered your own question. It was decidedly mediocre, which is why it got reviews mostly in the 5/10s

because that's what mediocre is supposed to be.

the hate came from the game that could never live up to the hype.

-sigh- Another one of these? Fine, I'll bite.

I didn't hate it because I was waiting for it for over a decade and expected something akin to 100% constant orgasmic bliss.

I hated it because it's just plain bad.

I think many people (not the crazy ones who thought it would be amazing) just wanted a fun, old-school shooter to give them some nostalgia or a "so bad it's good" game to laugh at.
sadly in the end we got a game that was every definition of mediocre.
I bought it just for the history and playing through just made me feel empty. If I hated it then it would be a different story but it was just nothing in the end, I think the hate comes from how little of an impact the game leaves and what a shallow experience it gives.
little to no memorable boss fights, boring levels, sluggish controls, slow pacing, and uninventive weapons just make it feel like a mixture of the worst things about the 90's and today.
It could have potential if the developers played up the cheesiness for all it's worth and made Duke more genre savvy and witty beyond out of place one-liners. But I'm not sure we will ever get that game now.
But to reiterate I wanted something good or bad and in the end I got what the game was called many times. A piece of "vapor-ware"
simply nothing that leaves you feeling nothing.

I didn't really hate it but I don't really like it. It isn't a good game in the slightest. The humor just seemed kind of... off.

I don't have problems with the whack-a-mole type games (Kill.Switch, Gears of War, etc) but it just shouldn't be in a Duke game. Although if it was pure run and gun it would be a hell of an even shorter game than it already is.

As another poster hit on above, it is irrelevant to modern gamers and it disappointed people who kind of expected an old school vibe from it. I feel they took a swing and tried to please both but ended up horribly missing either demographic.

The texturing was inconsistent in some places, it is a half-assed game with the exception that unlike all the other half-assed games being released quietly this one was hyped beyond all hell as the second coming (actually fourth for Duke) even with 2k / Gearbox knowing the quality of their product. In all fairness Forever has been a huge money sink for 14 years for every company that touched it...

I really love Gearbox as a developer and I know they can do much better. I'm giving them another chance with Colonial Marines but if they bugger that up then I'm going to be wary of their games. Who knows, maybe now that they have the license and pushed out the turd that took 14 years to produce they might even turn Duke around if he does get another chance at another game.

Btw, I know I'd say I'd give it 3/5, but in a more specific rating system, I'd give it 7/10, or "good."

If the whole thing were as fun as the second half, I'd give it more than that.

for some reason, I can't read this without picturing that smartass, stuck up white woman from Demolition Man

as for the thread itself, I enjoyed DNF

I mean, of course it wasn't a legitimately good game, but I enjoyed it for what it was

though the Hive can go fuck itself hard

I only just picked it up last night and I'm only about 1-2 hours in. I really hope I get to this magic point where the game improves soon (I'm not being sarcastic, I've heard that the game picks up CONSIDERABLY after the first couple of hours) because I'm starting to lose my patience with it.

Let's see, the shooting mechanic is floaty as shit, the game generally looks AWFUL, I could fix myself dinner in the time it takes for a new level to load, you can only carry two weapons and health regenerates which is the complete OPPOSITE of how a Duke Nukem game should be played, and the maturity level was on par with a 5 year old learning his first swear word and saying it over and over.... And over.....

So yeah, no redeeming qualities visible.

Here's how I see it.

The fact that the game came out is big news because the game was in development for so long, but in response, the people who were waiting and listening to the 12 year hype for DNF overlooked how nasty a development time the game had when it came to reviewing it, and also what era of gaming this title came from and who it applied to. That I believe explains the negative slants aimed at the character of Duke, because he is quite an old character.

However, I've seen reviewers point out Duke doing puzzles when he supposedly "shouldn't be" (Angry Joe), even though there were plenty of puzzles in the old Duke games and in Duke 3D that you had to do. Then, others have complained about the crude, chauvenistic machoism of Duke as childish (The Escapist), even though that's how he always was, even in the days of Duke 2, which I still love. That said, Yahtzee himself said before that "all reviews are subjective personal opinions", and that "...if you personally enjoyed a game, [bad reviews] really shouldn't get to you."

Having played some of DNF myself, and had a ton of fun and a lot of good, if crude, laughs in the game, I would say that this game fits right in with what I expected from Duke. It does have problems that do deserve to be pointed out, like the loading times, weapon limits, and the loss of extras like hidden areas. Outside of those things however, the game is enjoyable as an FPS, and the Ego Meter can be explained just like that; it's Duke's machoism keeping him alive and stitching those bullet wounds up without the use of anything besides beer and steroids. And what's wrong with that?

Overall, the hate against Duke is just founded on bad expectations and people forgeting the kind of person he was.

Once you finish the strip club mission after the hive missions, the game picks up straight away. Just persevere and it becomes fun.
