I have to throw in another vote for the early Might and Magic series. Those were great fun although they weren't quite forgiving. I'd have to say my favorite of the series happened to be the "Xeen" games - Clouds and Darkside.

Its an ASCII game so the enemies are represented by letters...

...where you can get killed from basic chemisty. If you pour water on acid (instead of acid on water) it explodes in your face and kills you : D

Hell you can get killed by ANYTHING. Regularly.
