I read a blog with a post about this story that had me in stitches. Aside from touching on this bizarre news event, it's also a scathing commentary on why banning things simply doesn't work.

"...I shudder to think what the result might be if I were incarcerated and attempted to start up a D&D club in prison. There?s a joke in here somewhere about my Enchanted Underpants of Galag?Nor being no match for my fellow inmates? natural +4 to Anal Rape, but I?m not going to make it because I?m totally not a nerd."

(Best read listening to Marilyn Manson, Judas Priest and Cannibal Corpse simultaneously.)

I'm sure even the smallest of the dice would be a projectile danger to inmates and guards. Maybe if they made the dice out of paper mache or something like that and had a guard in every room then it would be possible. Hell, even have the guard as the Dungeon Master for social interaction purposes.

That's a horrible reason, but I agree, it should be banned.

They don't deserve to have fun. And those dice probably could be used in an escape, like marbles... or really hard peas covered in grease... or a banana peel.

I say it's a good idea. Anyone who's ever played a hardcore session of ANY board game knows that at one point or another your blood will boil. Removing that privilege would slightly lower the chances of fights (and bones) breaking out which could only be a good thing. Plus, teamwork (or co-operation or even befriending others) should be heavily discouraged during their rehabilitation. I mean, what if prisoners actually did that more often? And kept doing it after they served their time? I don't want to have ex-cons trying to befriend me and heaven forbid I should have to work with one of them on a team...

I can totally plot out the conversation in the yard with the prisoners and the guards...

Prisoner 1 - "Yo, man! Look ova' there!"
Prisoner 2 - "Wha-"
*Prisoner 1 rolls a 20*
Prisoner 1 - "OH YEAH *****! Lightnin' on yo' ass!"
Prisoner 2 - "HEY WAIT A MINUTE! My cloak has 2+ lightning resistance, you don't effect me!"
Prisoner 1 - "Fuuu-!"
Guard - "Hey, can I join?"
Prisoners 1 + 2 - "NO!"

That's how they got banned.
