It would be hilarious if, whilst giving a press interview, the scientist sneezed.

Then just uttered an 'ooops....'

The title is an incorrect summary. From the information in the Huffington article, it should be "Dutch Researcher Creates Virus that Could Wipe Out Half of the World's Population...of Ferrets". A little less tragic and whole lot smellier.

I can't help but think this is just some sort of promo for the new Mission Impossible movie.
Avian flu can attack humans and it has proven to be quite dangerous in humans. The only reason it hasn't been contagious is because of where it resides. the reason they tested it on ferrets is because mammals have more similarities in their circulatory system than we have with birds and infecting humans with it to see if they're contagious is a bit unethical.

WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU MAKE THIS!?!
It's a matter of being prepared because when it comes to avian flu these changes have been feared to happen by itself given enough time. Now they know how much it will take for this too to happen and possibly calculate when they should start producing vaccines. This also gives them a chance to see if the old H5N1 vaccines will work with the new strand of the virus.
Reading sensationalist articles where they haven't spoken to the scientists involved in the project leads to hysteria.

why? why do people need to make these kinds of things?

Well, hard to tell if they don't publish. But I think you can safely say, that it has to do with research about the detailed mechanisms (maybe cellular, maybe molecullar) of a bird flu infection. Maybe it is also research about the pathobiochemistry of this virus or something related. It's allways difficult to say how far you have to go for something or whether you reach borders you shouldn't cross. I think without them publishing we will never be able to answer that questions in this case. One thing is for sure: If the media doesn't overplay it, then this technology is in the world now and won't just simply go away. But I think media exaggerated here, because they always do. Especialy in the field of biosciences.

This is one of those scenarios that if you saw it in a movie you would dismiss the premise for the fact that people would never be this stupid...

*sigh*

One of those is from the Daily Mail, the UK equal to Fox News, so one source down.

Huffington is a pretty pick muckraker too.

And the DutchMail is quoting from a paper called the 'Volkskrant' who have a tendency to blow everything out of proportion, so basicly the Daily Mail...

I'm not saying it isn't true (probably is, since Erasmus University does all kinds of research), but probably way blown out of proportion.

The article also states that they replicated (or did similar research) like the Japanese, so it isn't just the Dutch who do research on this subject. Hell, probably other European countries are also researching this.

But as stated in comments, Dutch security isn't at all very much secure, when research like this falls in the wrong hands... I fear the worst.

"Fouchier was asked to find out if H5N1 could lead to a pandemic and was able to show that a couple of mutations in the virus dna changed it into an extremely virulent form. Japanese researchers have also made similar findings, the paper says."

Japanese researchers have also made similar findings, the paper says.

Japanese researchers have also made similar findings, the paper says.

Japanese researchers have also made similar findings, the paper says.

Looks like Unit-731 is back up and running, Japan, you can officially go fuck yourselves once again.

I really hope nothing goes wrong with this. Otherwise things would probably end up like what happened in Prototype...

OH GOD NETHERLANDS. PUT IT AWAY, PUT IT AWAY. *hides*

I know you guys smoke a hell of a lot of pot over there, but c'mon! Making a freaking virus that can half the population of humanity is past the realms of a decent skooma and moon sugar trip!

KILL IT, KILL IT TO DEATH!

Without fully reading the title of the thread I thought this was a computer virus.
My response:
Holy crap!
Oh, it's not a computer virus.
...
HOLY CRAP!

I'm not too worried. It's just another pandemic/apocalypse/recession/nuclear fallout for me to survive.
I'm doing pretty well so far. I've survived loads.

Maybe I'm invincible.
Either that or every story that's sucked up by the media is blown out of proportion.

The former seems much more likely though.
