You know what's great about DORF FORT? Cats. Millions of the fuckers.

But then you figure out a way of basing your entire economy around slaughtering them [http://www.threepanelsoul.com/view.php?date=2008-04-21] and all is well!

I tried this game out for a few hours once, got hopelessly lost and confused, and gave up.

I tried playing Dwarf Fortress once.

The archaic graphics and confusing game play drove me away. I just couldn't wrap my head around the game. Is it really worth figuring out how to play it?

Yes, try the tileset repack I linked in the OP.

So, yeah, Dwarf Fortress. It's one of those games you just have to play. It's made by a developer who's motto is "Losing is Fun". That should tell you enough.

A Let's Play of the old two dimensional version. Also considered hilarious. [http://lparchive.org/LetsPlay/Boatmurdered/]
Nist Akath, a Dwarf Fortress story. [http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=19279.msg194517#msg194517]

Highly advised you read those before you play.

Main website. [http://bay12games.com/dwarves/]
Tilesetted version download. You'll probably want to play this one, instead. [http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=2021]
The wiki. (You'll need this.) [http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Main_Page]

So, yep, play it and comment. You can't claim you're a good gamer until you've won at Dwarf Fortress.
Introducing people to Dwarf Fortress as their first roguelike? Start people off with NetHack first; its a better place for people to develop a taste for the sheer freedom and power offered by this genre of game. You have to reprogram their minds; make them realize that roguelikes say, "Think inside the box? Fuck the box!" and that the only penalty they're facing is death itself!
And a luck penalty if they break the rules in Sokoban.

I don't know, I started off with DF.

DoomRoguelike seems to be a good one for introducing people, too. It got quite a few of my friends into the genre. (It's probably the quick games.)

I play a lot of roguelikes, but oddly enough, I've never tried Dwarf Fortress.

I've heard a lot about it, and it's really good, so I've heard, and I'd like to try it at some point...

I've just been too busy with other things, like MAngband.

Go play it. Like, right now.

I love Dwarf Fortress so very much, it's absolutely brilliant and I've easily spent more time playing it than every game released released within the last year combined. It's like the perfect mix of Dungeon Keeper and The Sims along with a few splashes of SimCity and Nethack.

Glorious, absolutely glorious.

My only major complaint is that once you get used to the game and become familiar with what works and what doesn't, it becomes almost too easy. There are few long-lasting challenges beyond completing your own ambitions. Goblin attacks are easily pushed back once you've established a proper defense, and few Titans and other monster are dangerous enough to cause any real harm. Although with the new randomized Titans it's possible to get Titan that are almost completely impossible to kill, but even then it feels less like a challenge since there's little you can do to fight them and more like an annoying bug. Only way to kill em is with magma, which can be entertaining to design elaborate traps employing it, but even then it's more a nuisance than fun.

But still the joy of building those elaborate structures is incredibly satisfying. Recently I've taken to building massive above-ground castle structures, but I'm getting a bit bored of the design so methinks I've a new layout in mind for my next fortress. Even performing some tests with my current fortress.

It shall be beautiful!

Seriously, if you like Dungeon Keeper or any other sort of game in that same vein, you absolutely must play Dwarf Fortress. It's not and easy game to learn, but once you have it's so very, very rewarding to play.

Have you tried the new version? It's got a lot harder, especially as you pretty much have to do a race to making steel weapons in order to survive.

Not just the quick games. To my understanding, Doom Roguelike is one of the more simpler roguelikes, if not the simplist. There's not a lot of information you need to wrap your head around, making it easier to get into.

Tried playing it once. Couldn't do it.

Tried playing it again yesterday, and I managed to tell a pet dog to do 'labour'. That's pretty much it.

Telling a dog to do labour is just assigning it to a person, I believe. =p

Dwarf Fortress has a lot of revolutionary ideas, but it is poorly coded and could incorporate a couple other things that would make the game 100 times better. Still unlike anything else and should be played by all gamers.
I don't know if it's poorly coded. I think the UI etc is poorly designed, but the coding seems quite sound.
Given that User Interface is one of those Key Features, I'd say I could agree. The core mechanics are sound, but the interface is so obtuse that it takes ages to simply figure out the most basic concepts. Is that dot a rock or a donkey? How do I get someone to dig? There are dozens of problems an early user must overcome before they can even get into the core of the game.

Dwarf Fort doesn't have a learning curve, it presents a flat, greased steel wall that extends as far as the eye can see with no promise that overcoming the obstacle is worth the effort save the occasional internet denizen asserting that there is quality entertainment to be had. I myself have booted the game on a half dozen occasions over the weekend and played for several hours and have yet to even figure out how to make any number of critical things work at all (like that freakin' forge!) much less actually delve into the act of trying to produce a fortress than runs smoothly.

Yes, resources exist that help the process, and it is literally ONLY through these resources that I even figured out how to do the simplest task. My first attempt resulted in my dwarves milling around, taking it upon themselves to eat the donkeys, and then dying. People might say that this is "part of the charm" but to be honest, if I could get said charm with an interface not seemingly concieved to produce confusion, frustration and anguish, I think I might actually like the game.

Hmmm, Liberal Crime Squad seems fun, managed to convert two hostages while two others killed themselves and recruited a bunch of gang members.

After a near group wipe (all but myself where shot by cops) I rebuilt again :D

I'm terrible at it, but I do enjoy the half hour or so I last until everyone has either been eaten or killed each over.
And I definitely respect it, for its complexity and the fact that ONE DUDE makes it.
