I like how it's handled in the more recent Rockstar games, with the Euphoria engine having the characters dynamically react to whichever original way you killed 'em. That's how pretty much every game is gonna do it in the future, with pre-packaged death animations going the way of the dinosaur :)

I always liked them because it's a bigger touch than instantly dead. Cutting off people's limbs in MGR Revengeance is fun to see how they act, but my favorite death animations are Leons from RE4.
And his death rattle is hilarious. AOOOOUUUU?

I like how TF2 handles it's animations, where only a small fraction of headshot/decapitation/backstab kills actually play the animation, and allow the physics engine to improvise the rest. It can lead to some pretty spectacular ragdoll physics, but generally behaves quite impressively. The amount of damage usually determines the force that the ragdoll takes, with shotguns making the ragdoll slightly spin around and collapse sideways and sniper rifles make them backflip.

The Rockstar Advanced Game Engine does away with animations altogether, but it has very buggy ragdoll physics.

I do enjoy the Skyrim executions but they start to get tedious when they begin happening every time I kill someone.

The executions are meant to spice up otherwise routine climaxes in combat. They are a brief second of respite to look at someone get overtaken for a few seconds before you get back to killing any other threats.

At any rate, the best "stock" death animations are simply ragdoll effects. With the right physics engine and weight distribution, ragdoll physics can be fun and hilarious without being too jarring. In other words, ragdolls are great as long as you don't do them like how Bethesda did them in Oblivion.

I miss them a lot ):

Honestly, I think my main problem is fluidity. Since you can't really accommodate for every position someone can be in when they die, there tends to be a sort of reset to a standard position before death. In some instances it's not to noticeable, but when my sniper in CoD stands up from crouching so he can fall over from a headshot...

I like the death animations of crash himself in the orignal games, burned to ashes, flat as pancake, shoes come off when going down bottomless pits.
Ahhh... good times.

Timesplitters had a good lot of funny dying animations, like when you'd burn a zombie to death and it would continue walking but it's legs would slowly give way, causing it to slowly descend before it's whole body slumps to the floor.

Or that one for when you get shot in the ballz and roll backward onto the ground like a dead insect.

And nothing's more fun than sending a grenade hurtling towards a group of enemies and watching them all fly in different directions before returning to earth in a heap. I like the way the animation changed depending on which direction the explosion came from.

In terms of gibs, the injector would cause your enemy's screen to stretch(if human), with their body expanding at high speed, if you loaded enough darts into them they'd explode in a bloody mess of gibs! Headsprouter would gib, too, in story mode, causing damage if you were too close!

Oh, yeah, and there was one in TS1 which occured when an enemy would fall from a high place, they'd scream and fall, as you'd assume, but in TS3 at one point in the game, they expanded upon it, in the level "You take the high road", one of the guys you'd shoot off one of the balconies would fall in the same way as in TS1, but they added more to the slapstick misery. The guy lands on a fence below, on his crotch. As he gasps for air in shock and pain, he falls again, into the abyss below Kronia.

Truly they are the masters of death animations.

I prefer canned animations to instant ragdoll. Ragdoll physics just almost always look absolutely silly and I can't take them seriously.

I have to think of Battlefield 3, for giving the best melee kill animations, but for having the most unsatisfying ragdoll physics otherwise and THIS screen.

TF2 has some good death animations with backstab or headshot kills and some decapitation kills, but otherwise it's kind of eh.

I wish they added some of these animations. A bit clunky, but I love the Medic's animation.

Yeah, too many games just have canned animations like call of duty.

OT: I'd like to add the kill cam from sniper elite V2. The game had its problems but that killcam was BRUTAL. Exploding nads and stuff.

I liked Left 4 Dead dying animations, where the infected went into half of a dying animation and then ragdolize. It made them look like you actually shot something alive rather than magically evaporating their bones by shooting them.

Also Doom's animations were awesome, particularly the Mancubus one.

The dying animations of some characters in League of Legends are pretty good/funny (all on Youtube).
Especially Cassipoeia, Ziggs or Pulsefire Ezreal or when it matches some of their abilities like with Zyra or Kog'Maw.
I have a soft spot for Aether Wing Kayle's death animation. She collapses in on herself and goes into a mini black hole... Fuckin' hype. However since nobody ever plays Kayle and even fewer have the skin it's freaking rare to see unless it's me dying. That's unlikely too because I don't even touch Kayle anymore.

Thresh has a good one, his lantern collects his own soul when he dies. 'S like ironic or something.

Also Darius. He just sort of drops... Doesn't even slowly fall over, he just hits the deck really hard.

And Kassadin. Not because it's cool but because YES! WE FINALLY GOT THE BASTARD! TAKE THAT YOU SHIT! RIFTWALK?! MORE LIKE, DEAD LOL!

[sub][sub]I fucking despise Kassadin...[/sub][/sub]
