So I was thinking about some of the games shown at E3 and I noticed a trend in some of the biggest ones there. Some of them seem to share an incredibly striking resemblance to Uncharted.

Tomb Raider is Uncharted with a bow; The Last Of Us is Uncharted in post-apocalyptia; and Star Wars 1313 is Uncharted in space. They all seem to have a very linear structure made up of light platforming that's more about progression than skill, and shooting fools in 3rd person. They all do it in a very cinematic way too with a lot of scripted sections.

Now I'm not saying any of these games are bad, but from what I've seen the similarities are uncanny. Also, I admit that I'm not that familiar with Uncharted and of course a short E3 demo doesn't necessarily represent an entire game, but I couldn't shake the thought. Anyone else notice this?

I noticed a lot of third person adventure games with light platform elements. I wasn't aware Uncharted was the first one to do this, though it is a notable example.

Frankly, it doesn't surprise me to see a surge in this kind of game after Uncharted's success. Whether or not it directly caused a specific game to be as it is, Uncharted is an industry leader.

It's not that these games all share the same genre, it's the way they do it. Very linear and scripted sequences in the aim of creating a cinematic experience. Also, these games seem to include a lot of climbing on vertical surfaces.

you noticed a bunch of 3rd person shooters similar to Uncharted. i couldnt see them underneath all the "Trying to be the next Call of Duty" and "EA rips of customers".

Please tell me this is troll. Uncharted copied off Tomb Raider, not the other way around.

Tomb Raider was an acrobatic 3D platformer with shooter elements, Uncharted is a 3rd person shooter with 3D platforming/climbing elements. Tomb Raider is now a third person shooter with 3D platforming/climbing elements.

The new Tomb Raider looks more like Uncharted than Uncharted was like the old Tomb Raider. Still going to check it out though.

Uncharted has actually gotten me into 3rd person shooters, a genre I stayed away from until now, Just beaten 2 and I'm waiting on 3 arriving.

So good for me I guess, I'm looking forward to playing more high quality games in this genre.

Because Tomb Raider, first created in 1996, obviously totally ripped off Uncharted.

GG time machines.

Guys, I know Tomb Raider came before Uncharted. But the new game is a reboot. They're changing their course a lot from where they have been recently, and that course is to imitate Uncharted.

OT: OP to be honest the amount of third person games is a large breath of fresh air....the kind you see in a white dwarf star

not to mention, one of the big games people are talking about were developed by Naughty Dog...

wait..weren't...weren't they the ones who developed Uncharted?!!

*Gasp!*

Why would they ever make a game in the same style in what they have done before! The Horror!

why is this a thread?

OT: there are trends in gaming. look back at gears of war. when that launched and had MASSIVE success, tons of people were out to copy it. i'm pretty sure i heard uncharted compared to gears. look back to mario even. especially super mario 64. you had crash bandicoot, gex the gecko, spyro even trying to compete with the 3d graphics and replicate success. this is always going to happen. although i would say more than anything, call of duty is leading the trends right now. CoD4 had massive success (for good reason) and everybody tried to replicate that. some more successfully than others, and even the next two modern warfare games were trying to replicate the first's success. and they did so in quite grand fashion.

I don't own a PS3 and have never played Uncharted.

Therefore, I have nothing to base these games off of and your so-called "rip off" connotations are null and void.

...yay logic?

Isn't Uncharted a PS3 exclusive that no one cares about? I've never played it. I spent my money on a big boy console, it's called a computer.
Are you kidding me?

Uncharted is a fantastic series. Tons of fun. It's like playing a young and cocky Indiana Jones.

And please don't bring that elitism crap here, or anywhere. I'm a PC gamer too (see my avatar), and we really don't need that kind of egotistical nonsense further wrecking our image.

As to the OP, well yes and no. Tomb Raider is going back to the beginning, right? Her first adventure or whatever. I think it's smart to borrow some of the pacing and elements that Uncharted brought, but I definitely hope there's acrobatics like Assassin's Creed. I think that would be appropriate for the game.

The one I'm worried about is Dead Space 3.

From what I've noticed, the Tomb Raider reboot isn't particularly like Uncharted, it seems that in Tomb Raider, you have to survive on a hostile island, whereas in Uncharted, you have to propagate the master race.

But if we're talking about E3, well. Remember guys, Planetside 2 totally ripped off Halo.
