This could be awesome or very bad.

I do however see it a good thing as it will probably help educate people about Dante's Inferno, and may even get somebody to read who otherwise wouldn't.

Hopefully nobody will complain that the main character is named after Devil May Cry.

Well, at least 2. Though I think the third one might be a bit boring since all Dante does is ride around on a beam of light and talk to his ex-girlfriend.
There's enough leeway for interpretation in the poem, though, that even Paradiso could make an interesting adventure game, if an uncommercial one. The problem here just seems to be that the game appears to fit more into the God of War-esque action genre (though the trailer is too ambiguous to tell for sure), which really makes no sense, since without remaking the entire story in the vein of American McGee's Alice - which was a better study in contrasts than a morbid Inferno would make - the style of gameplay really isn't tenable in the context of the narrative. Simply put: had the trailer started out with nicely-scored music and FMV of Dante's dementia in the forest, it would've seemed alot more promising.

EA is quickly shedding their reputation of being non-risk-takers and sequel-itis mongers. They're actually putting fresh material out there for us to ingest.

And EA Redwood Shores? Were it not for Left 4 Dead, those guys would've locked down the survival-horror vote for 2008 with Dead Space.

Dante's Inferno, the book, would be laughable in a page-for-page translation from book to video game. It's a dang good thing they're doing some heavy re-imagining to make it work -- so I'm rooting for them to put their artistic license to good use. But to think they shouldn't even try? I can definitely appreciate the risk EA is taking. Pretty proud of them actually. They're leaving the safehouse on this one.

Since when do only Christians go to hell?
Well, because Hell is the Christian place of Damnation.

Jews don't have a hell at all, Gehenna is more a purgatory, no-one however evil stays there forever. The Greeks had Hades, Islam is Jahannam and (bad) Hindus end up in Naharam.
I suppose Hell is used a generic term for any of those, but if it's referring to the Divine Comedy then it's going to be Christians.

Why don't EA just take this to it's logical conclusion and begin making James Joyce's Ulysses.
Hey, back off... my proposal for a turn-based JRPG version of Waiting for Godot hasn't gone through yet, so stay off my turf.

You can keep Becketts drivel! I'm motioning for a first-person shooter based on Hamlet, that'll sell.

Am I the only one who thinks this could do well?
Nope I think it could do okay. So what if it's not close to the source material I still think it would be fun slaying endless demons in 9 versions of hell.(if I interpreted right)
It'll sell, yes. It won't be a good game. 9-year-olds who can't afford a PS3 or convince their parents to get them one will get this to make up for God of War.

Oh who knows, it might be fun. Maybe EA will surprise us with a good control scheme and a solid combat mechanic and some brutal deaths and whatever, but that still won't be Dante's Inferno.

A quick update about Dante's Inferno (a.k.a Stab-man's adventures in Hell). The new trailer looks freekin' sweet. Let's be honest here, the bosses look like fun, and the main weapon is badass in the extreme.

But it's not Dante's Inferno. It's Stab-man's adventures in Hell.

EA, please rename this. Dante was not a crusader. He didn't use a scythe. There isn't a woman trapped in Hell, and I can't remember any of those bosses in the book.

Don't get me wrong, it looks like fun. That big mouth creature looks genuinely imaginative and would be a good fight if EA pulls it off, but the fact remains:

It is not Dante's Inferno. Stop calling it that.
