Unless they take over development of Call of Duty to produce 'Call of Duty: Sci-Fi Space Marine Super-Armour' I don't see this happening.

Well from the rumors floating around about the next CoD installment, I don't think it will take much.
What rumors would those be?
There were rumors that the next installment would be set far into the future, possibly in space.

Why not, instead of attempting to beat COD, you set to work on a new, fresh brand that defines a market separate from the over-mined FPS community. Why, with your incredible resources and weight in the gaming industry, surely you could open up new and exciting possibilities that - hey! HEY!

...Where are you going?

Well at this point the CoD series is down the drain. The only two genuinely good games in the series are CoD4 and CoD2. I think MW2 is fun in small doses, and the zombies in BO and WaW are both really fun, but all in all none of those games are very good or well made. I could go into a whole rant about where the series went wrong but I don't think that would be welcome in this particular thread. If you ever hear me speaking for the CoD series, and I don't specify otherwise, always assume I'm only speaking for CoD4 and CoD2. On topic; I don't think EA will make a game comparable to CoD, just because CoD has a great class creation system, and it's controls are second to none, as far as responsiveness, and intuitiveness. Two perfect examples, could be to compare Bad Company 2 with Modern Warfare 2. MW2 kills me with its badness, but no other game has as responsive and intuitive controls. Bad Company 2 on the other hand, while it is a fun game, isn't played in 60 FPS which results in a laggy feeling game, and its controls aren't exactly the best made (melee is R2 for example).

First they said that Battlefield 3 would also be on consoles...

Now they want it to be a CoD-killer...

I'm scared for my favourite video game series.

In other news, Vegeta recently vowed to beat Goku in a fist fight, Gary Oak vowed to beat Ash Ketchum at a Pokemon tournament, and Elmer Fudd vowed to catch "that wascally wabbit."

Okay, so EA's task isn't quite as hopeless as the three I listed above, but something tells me they aren't going to outsell Call of Duty any time soon, at least not until A.) the average gamer gets tired of the series, and B.) EA has a new shooter that is familiar enough that they don't have to relearn everything, but different enough to make the whole idea interesting again, like the transition from Halo to Call of Duty a few years back. A and B will happen eventually, but who knows if EA will be the publisher that gets there first.

As a side note, the built in spell check in Firefox recognizes wabbit and Pokemon, but not wascally or Ketchum. Goku, Vegeta, and Fudd are also unrecognized.

in terms of sales, this is near impossible. but i argue in terms of quality, they have already, over and over again. dragon age, mass effect, and dead space are all games that have beat call of duty in my heart. too bad they arent mindless fps's

Don't try to 'beat' CoD, you'll just draw attention to it. A series can't stay popular forever, and it'll fade into obscurity if they stop making such obvious competitors.
/thread.

I believe Battlefield and Medal of Honour has already 'beat' Call of Duty.

Quantity? Man tough luck :p

Good luck to them, I guess. I guess it's good to have goals. But isn't that what was said about Medal of Honor? Look how that turned out.

I agree. Bad Company 2's structure? The different vehicles, spotting system, and the way the different classes all have their own different perks and drawbacks is fantastic, I love it. But the feel of it is just off somehow. Everything looks plastic-y to me, and the guns seem more like toys than actual weapons. Call of Duty always just *feels* right, somehow. Feels more fluid and intuitive. Anyways, nice post, although i do like hijacking BO off my roomie's comp for some offline bot shooting.

Neh, I could find at least five people who would stay otherwise.
I think innovation is more important than competition. But hey, they're welcome to try, and if it makes a good game, so be it.

CoD is the WoW of FPSes.

You have to really have an excellent game in order to throw it off the throne, but millions of 12-year-olds will still buy it anyway.

I heard they are making 3 at once, one another modern game, one in the future and another I forget, but dear god don't let it be another WWII shooter. Keep in mind though I only said I HEARD, although I'm pretty sure a future game is confirmed.

When a game sells as well as this series has been, you can pretty much guarantee it to run far far past its welcome.

Not only for said series itself, but for all the imitators that spring up. Corporate gaming is ruled by trends after all.
