Sounds very much to me like this:

EA: Hey guys, don't abandon Microsoft because of this, they are the ones we are rooting for!

If MS had trounced Sony, we wouldn't have heard a damned thing from EA. Reason for thinking this? Wii U, they have already written it off. Competition my arse, Microsoft just did a better job of implementing the restrictions arsehats like EA want in the gaming world.

Who needs Microsoft? Let's get Nintendo back into the running.

Or, better yet, tell Microsoft to take the bench. Who wants to nominate Sega? Dreamcast 2 with Shenmue III?

Ah Peter, again with the trying to steer people toward the conclusion you want without any good reason why, pretty much just because you say so.

Granted, competition is a necessary thing for a market to work properly... But, I'm not going to hurt myself to keep it going. The Xbone invades my privacy, subverts my property rights and leashes me to their network; the PS4 plays games, and a Computer plays games and a whole lot more, so I'd never get a Xbone either way.

Also, just to drive the point home? Origin is overbloated, effectively spies on my computer without any input from me, all games cost the same 60$/? either at launch or at 2 years of age and has little to no sales. Even If I can have both, Origin effectively hurts me. So, instead of doing business in both I only do so with Steam. Competition be damned, I want respect first.

I disagree. Sony are only going to keep doing what they're doing. A lack of competition won't change that.

Companies may rise and companies may fall, but gaming is here to stay.

Microsoft isn't going to be Sony's foil. Nintendo is. Microsoft is just a rich kid who copies off of everyone's papers and then wonders what went wrong when everyone knows he cheated. Nintendo will hold stable this generation because they're doing their own thing. And hell, they're the ones who originally helped create the Playstation with Sony, so they have actual talent on their side.

There's your balance, buddy. It's Ken VS Ryu, with Dan Hibiki tossed to the curb.

This sounds like diplomatic speak. EA doesn't want to cast its lot with one platform only to later learn that the one they didn't pick now dispenses free blowjobs. I'm sure what EA and other publishers really want is for platforms to use the same format so they don't have to make the same game twice for consoles.

But they are competing. Sony's just winning. Microsoft's ideas are terrible, and "the rest of us benefit" because we can all buy from Sony instead. That's not a bug, that's a feature: capitalism is working as intended.

At the moment the boxing match looks more like the scene in fight club, where Edward Norton batters himself and is left bloody and broken at Sony's feet ... the only difference is Sony is mocking MS the whole time.

Mr Moore is right though, Sony with a monopoly could be a bad thing, they could implement just about anything and still be number 1.
True, however Sony also has Nintendo, PC and tablets to contend with (yes there are decent gaming tablets, both Windows 8 and Android ones, they will become a threat in time).

yes, our market thrives on competition, but that doesnt mean sometimes one side cant lose for another contender with less of their head up their ass to step up and take their place
The other important thing here is that last gen, Microsoft and Sony really weren't competing. This kind of aggressive undercutting on Sony's behalf IS competition. Microsoft, if it wants to balance the scales, must respond. False equity for the sake of false equity is complete bullshit that doesn't benefit the consumer. Is it any surprise that that seems to be what Moore wants?

Sony hit a devastating blow and the crowd went wild. If this was a truly competitive market, Microsoft would be looking for ways to stage a comeback. Unfortunately, the "competition" of the last couple generations has led to a complacent Microsoft that just got knocked on its ass, but still seems to be pulling the "haters gonna hate" and "deal with it" crap.

"We can't be an industry that's dominated by one manufacturer"

... but a single publisher and video game powerhouse is alright, it would seem in his mind.

I love the fact that EA, who for the longest period of time had a monopoly on American Football is talking about competitive practices.

Yeah, see that's how competition works EA. Boths sides don't get to reap the reward if one side sucks, and so they have to change and adapt to compete. Sony kicking the crap out of them is EXACTLY what should happen, or else what is Microsoft going to learn by this debacle? False equity based on the premise of 'competition' is bullshit. EA just wants to see Microsoft do well because I'm sure their system design has the 'project ten dollar' cretins salivating. With EA's stock having been hammered so badly due to their own mismanagement, I don't think I'd be out there trying to dispense these nuggets of wisdom until my own house was in order. The fact that an EA exect doesn't understand how competition is supposed to work is hardly surprising though.

Well, there's Nintendo and the PC/Mac platforms, too. The Playstation has two other enemies to contend with, that should hopefully keep them in check.

I think once the Wii U has some of those awesome E3 games released, it should see quite the sales boost.
The thing is though Nintendo and the PC have not really been competing with the other consoles at all.

The wii U isnt really getting the same games as the ps4/xbox one since developers are shunning it and the PC doesnt really get enough sales to properly compete. When you look at the sales of multiplatform games the PC sales very rarely end up being more then 10%. Even if the xbox one does horrible compared to the ps4 it will still have a larger market share on multiplatform games then the pc.

He does have a very valid point, and as the article said: competition does indeed help businesses grow to better benefit the consumer.

By his own logic, Sony has officially outdone MS, as such it's MS's turn to respond. The problem is that every response they've given has translated to "Fuck you, consumers!"

Competition in business is fantastic, and in order to maintain a good competition both companies need to be trying their best. Sony put it's best foot forward and people cheered, MS is basically refusing to compete at this point. It's not Sony's fault if every single thing that MS says and does offends their target market. It's like a drag race in which the light turns green and one racer blasts off the starting line while the other racer jumps out of his car and starts ripping his engine apart.

To quote Bill Belichick when he was accused of running up the score when his team clearly outclassed their opponents: "It's not my job to NOT score, it's the other team's job to keep me from scoring." (paraphrased)

Sure, it's a bit of a dick-move to run up the score in a sport when you're beating the crap out of the other team. But what about this case? What, is Sony supposed to make their console shittier just so it can even out with the XBone? Or should MS try to raise itself to the consumer friendly standards that Sony is bringing to the table and hands-down made them the "winner" of E3?

How about we discuss the competition that really matters? The competition between software? Both consoles play games, to practically the same degree, there's your competition. Now go and make some games worthy of the hardware. If publishers adopt the same attitude as EA, then it's only encouraging people to ignore that they're the ones that make the difference. Sure, a console can have a whole bunch of neat features, and sure a console can do everything in its power to shoot itself in the foot, but focusing on what the console is doing, instead of what you're making for the console is focusing on the wrong issue.
