EA was the only reason Crysis 3 didn't come out on Wii U

A recent interview with one of the leads at Crytek released the info that Crytek actually had a running build of Crysis 3 for the Wii U, but because of EA not giving them publishing rights for the Wii U it wasn't released.

So basically the Wii U was powerful enough to run Crysis 3 well, maybe even better than the other two consoles but because of EA's hatred of the Wii U it wasn't released. But I think there's something fishier going on here.

Think back to E3 2011, when the Wii U was officially announced. Remember when EA's CEO came on stage saying there will be a version of BF3 for the Wii U, they will support it more than the Wii and they will work hard porting their games to the system. Fast forward to now and none of those are happening, and with the announcment of no new NFL games for the Wii U the support is actually less than that of the Wii's. Mass Effect 3 was a shitty rushed port, and I can almost guarantee you Battlefield 4 will be "For Xbox 360, PS3, PC and Next Gen consoles! Not the Wii U though".

Why is this? Well there were rumors that during the development of the Wii U after E3 2011 EA asked Nintendo to hand over all of their online infrastructer to them so they could make Origin the Wii U's main online service. Of course Nintendo said no, why the fuck wouldn't they? I reckon that this is probably true if you look at the glaring evidence that EA dropped support for the Wii U because of "something". It wasn't because of sales predictions, because if that was the reason they wouldn't have announced full support at E3; it wasn't because of lack of money because of the same damn reason. So the only thing left I can see is this reason. Also, the lack of micro-transactions on ME3 is probably due to Nintendo not wanting that on their consoles, and none of the games have online passes even though they do on consoles. So I reckon that Nintendo said no to EA's bullshit practises, and EA pulled a hissy fit and decided to drop all support.

So, do you think this is the reason? Why do you think EA dropped support for the Wii U?

It's probably just EA getting money hungry (as usual, not that I hate them some of their games are good)and Nintendo won't pay up to the high amounts of cash EA wants to make the game compatible with the Wii U.

Darn you EA, etc, etc.

Can't say I blame them really. Anyone who's interested in Crysis 3 probably already owns one of the other systems. Didn't the other ports that the Wii U has do really badly?

I'm not sure the Wii U will pick up again until there's a new 3D Mario/Zelda/maybe Metroid.

Sure the wii u controller would really benefited Crysis 3.Why Mortal Combat(the last) isnt ported onto the PCs or entirely game franchises ignore other consoles. And a popular example is that MW3 isnt even on the nitendo systems why u no hate activision?Probably because its porting Diablo 3 YaY.Its not only EA its all the developers its a manner of market or hard development. It clearly wouldnt sell to many people so why throw a bunch of production money on a lost cause

So...wait...Nintendo ISN'T the biggest money hungry involve' in this scenario?

For reals though, it's hard to gauge what's going to happen with the WiiU. It could suddenly be rockin' for EA and all them, or it could be a Nintendo only pony ride...either way, I doubt we can look too much into what's out now for a system that's younger than my engagement to my fiance' (a year ago the end of May, thank you for asking). As long as the releases for it are strong games, and fresh and reasonably (sorta of) priced...I say bring it on!

They probably think that not many WiiU owners will buy it. It's common belief (perhaps misguided) that most gamers using Nintendo consoles aren't into this sort of games.

seems like a cycle really

nintendo says they want to encourage core gaming, but then core gamers get put off because of being burned by the Wii, less games get put in the Wii U...that kind of thing

granted, I wouldn't have bought any of EA's crap if it came out on the WiiU and I had one anyway (they don't make games I want, and on rare occasion publish one of mild interest)

but EA throwing a hissy fit cause Nintendo won't let them ruin their system with EA's business model sounds about right, hell, if I was in charge of a console I wouldn't really want EA doing as it pleases on it ether

Yeah, maybe 3% of the total people who bought Crysis 3 would've bought it to play on their Wii U, lol. Crytek/EA most likely calculated that porting simply wouldn't have been worth it.

These days the only reason anyone should buy a Nintendo console is if they are a huge fan of Nintendo-exclusive games.

If Nintendo made their ancient franchises available across all platforms, Wii U sales would fucking dry up (that is, even more dry than they currently are)...ALL their console sales would dry up. I believe this to be an absolute fact.

IF (and this is a big if) a version of Origin appeared on the PS4 and NextBox then I would be suspicious, however all we have is rumour.

It could be likely that EA is going off the Wii experience and not bothering with a 'kiddie konsole' or trying to push for a more powerful Nintendo console that is more in line with the soon to be released Sony and Microsoft ones in order to reduce costs.

Yup, no surprise here however Nintendo is at the disadvantage as EA is giving Nintendo the blueballs.

The OT mentioned this;

And I agree with them. Why would EA announce full support at E3, if their reason for not bringing Crysis 3 to the WiiU was because of sales predictions?

Something must have changed. and to be honest, that rumour sounds about right to me. After all, EA do like to pick up their toys and go home when they disagree with someone. Hence why a handful of EA games vanished from Steam when they moved to Origin.

Since E3, several games have been ported to the Wii U and performed poorly. For instance:

Mass Effect 3 [http://www.vgchartz.com/game/70788/mass-effect-3/]

Assassin's Creed 3 [http://www.vgchartz.com/game/70620/assassins-creed-iii/]

Arkham City [http://www.vgchartz.com/game/70796/batman-arkham-city/]

I believe that EA have probably noticed this and decided that porting the game wouldn't be a worthwhile investment. Pretty much everyone who wants the game will already own, and be comfortable with, another system. There really isn't much benefit to porting to the Wii U right now.

Oh, I never knew that. Thanks for the enlightenment.

That would explain why EA pulled support.

I just wanna tell you, VG Chartz Sucks at actually tracking down sales. For instance, it says that Sonic All-Stars Racing Transformed only has about 180,000 on the WiiU, when in reality, It's close to having 1 Million Sales. [http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2013/02/sonic_and_all_stars_racing_transformed_approaches_one_million_sales] Not only that, but New Super Mario Bros. U Sales actually surpass Nintendoland Sales. I'm not saying they're completely wrong, all I am saying is that they're slow.

OT: Yeah, that's my personal theory too. Also, I heard that Microsoft and EA had a big agreement that they're soon gonna announce. What do you think this could mean?

Its called Catch 22.

(and yes, someone here on escapist told me of the same term when I was talking about PSVita)
