How is this jsut an increase awareness, I gave at least two reasons why this works. Like the whole we need to burn gas to make electrisity so it saves us gas so we can make it last until we find something better by considerving? The amount of gwatz (i think it is) we save would be in the millions. It saves probably $15 for an hour without lights?
This is why rabid fanboyism should be a criminal offense. You have no idea what you are talking about, no idea why your position is valid or invalid and especially have no command over the English language.

You have proven that you have no idea what a Gigawatt is, let alone why this is a great idea or even a not-bad idea. People aren't going to follow your logic because you spam them with arguments you have no knowledge about, so please, stop trying to play with anyone with a brain, go back to school, learn about the world and then try and present the idea that you can totally convince the world to turn their lights off for an hour.

And way to miss the point, tardboy.

Candles? But I'm not allowed to play with matches anymore...

I'll stick to my electricity thank you.

If we have to suffer without lights then why not go further and encourage people to switch off their TV's and read or interact with their offspring. Or simply stop drinking hot drinks so that we don't overfill our kettles?

I'm sick of global warming issues being forced down our throats all day long. From green taxes on our vehicles to seing Al Gore using dramatic music in his films to make me think the world is going to die and that we only have one hour to save it.
Suffer? After the first 15 mineuts, you're eyes start going into a night vision mode, it's cool. :)
Not to turn this in a bitching contest but...

In just about every single game manual you will find on the first page something that looks like this...

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION
READ THE FOLLOWING WARNINGS BEFORE YOU OR YOUR CHILD PLAY VIDEO GAMES

And at some point it advises this...

To reduce the likelihood of a seizure when playing video games:

Sit or stand as far from the screen as possible.
Play video games on the smallest available television screen.
Do not play if you are tired or need sleep.
Play in a well-lit room.
Take a 10 to 15 minute break every hour.

You are posting this to a gamer's website. And you are asking gamers to switch off their lights...

All you are really achieving by spamming posting this here, is increasing the risk of an innocent gamer getting a seizure.

That makes you a bad person.

1. Nobody cares.
2. Apparently you don't. Electricity by the way.
3. This is spam.
4. Yea, maybe you are in college, but that doesn't mean you aren't an idiot.
5. 125 is about a brick above average. I have an IQ well above that, but everyone knows that IQ is fucking useless, I've worked with people with 100 IQs who are useful and 180 IQ's who couldn't tie their own shoes.

Thanks for proving that you really are stupid.

If you're serious about the not seeing how it works comment, it takes gas to burn to make electrisity to run the lights. It's small, simple, but in a big enough scale, makes a big difference because it all adds up.
i don't think most lights have been running on gas power for a while now... Most of my energy is hydro, so really there isn't any point.

On top of which, regardless of whether the lights are on or not, the power is still being produced. So really this is the difference between harming the environment for no reason, and harming the environment so we can see. I'm gonna go with being able to see.

If I had any say in the matter, I would too. After all, someone has to use all the electricity the idiots who turn off their lights are wasting.

It is the principle of posting it on a forum inhabited by gamers. Why would I choose to stop playing games for a whole hour? Or 45 mins if I take my recommended break during that hour?

Go and post this on youtube or yahoo answers, you may will find more gullible people over there to listen to your point.

Where in God's name did you get that statistic? By that logic, by having my lights on, I spend over $360 A DAY, just on lights.

Illogical. I'm amazed the mods haven't had this thread locked down yet.

I don't believe in global warming (or to be more specific, I don't believe humanity is the cause of said warming, there's been many temperature fluctuations in our planet in it's history without humanity contributing one bit, and people forget we were in an ice age 30,000 years or so ago) so I won't be turning any lights off for Earth Hour.
Agreed, Theres alot of proof either prooving it or disproving it, now its just about taking a side
WOW. JUST WOW. LOTS OF EVIDENCE EITHER WAY. You got us there, it's totally an even playing field. Go read the Weather Makers by Tim Flannery. I really don't want to spend time typing about what I mostly know from this great book, which should be mandatory reading, unlike The Inconvenient Truth, which is just a movie,(Made for the dumb, in other words) and it arranges the facts to make them sound more frightening to scare the weak minded. The Weather Makers is written by a biologist, who makes no flash and bang. He eloquently states the facts the minions don't want to hear.

I think in the end "Earth Hour" is really just an hour of symbolism for what we could be doing everyday if we thought about it (conserving energy and the like.) Just another point of reminder... like rememberance day for veterans or family day to spend time with your family.

If you believe global warming is true or false, we can all probably agree that we don't need to be using more electricity then is really needed (be it because of environmental issues, amount of renewable resrouces or the money factor.)

It's a simple way for everyone to participate in the symbolism as well... like wearing a poppy on rememberance day or just turning off your lights for an hour. I think the respect behind the action is important.

I once has a neighbour who cut down a large tree in the front of her house on Earth Day, I realise that maybe she didn't want the tree there and all but it could have been any other day! It's just the principle of the thing.

OK, I'll bite.
Ignoring the fact that switching all the office flourescent lights off for an hour and then switching them back on again actually burns more watts than it saves, the idea of going without electricity for an hour as a consciousness-raising device is naive.
We've had it here in Oz for two years running. Most of the offices in the city skyline ignore it (probably for the above reason), and while the missus and myself turned off the mains to the house, we then hit a restaurant instead - which defeats the object a bit.

Can't say I'll bother this year.

And yeah - $15/hr on lights? What the crap are you running, stadium floods?

-_- because an hour of use is SO expensive.
Sorry I'm not a broke hippie.
Yes, and you're also not a lovely person and not not a troll. Everything adds up, hour of every light in the house $12, every tv in a house hold, $18, every energy waster that has the retarded off confirmation light on (like it isn't just easier to see that no loght means it's off) $9, laptop/computer $15, dishwasher, $12, washer and dryer $19, well, I don't think I have to go further as that already hypotheticaly would add up to over $75, enjoy.
So 75$ per hour to have everything in my house on? That's 1800$ per day! 54000$ per month! Does anyone here have an electric bill that says 54000 on it? Based on that math I think I can safely say you're lying and/or have bad info.

the funny part about earth hour it is it causes more damage to the environment than it does good

simply because it stresses the electrical grid because everyone turns on all the lights they had on before, see the simpler thing is to not turn on lights when you don't have to or use those nice low wattage bulbs
unfortunately the filaments in the bulb are worse than using a regular 60 watt bulb anyway :p
umm that doesn't make sense really, 60 watt light bulbs have a tungsten filament in them, the compact florescent ones don't have one and they aren't really as dangerous as they once were

Sorry, But how will me turning off my lights for an hour help save the world? The power that lights my house doesnt come directly from the earth's soul, it comes from a power plant somewhere.

Besides, im pretty sure that the whole entire world doesnt have their lights on 24 hours a day normally. This isnt the one hour of the year that lights wont be on. Its 4 PM here and none of my lights are on now. How will this one hour help?

And WTF "Switching off your lights is a vote for Earth, or leaving them on is a vote for global warming". I feel like they may have used clever wording to misrepresent me here.

IF YOU DONT LOVE THE EARTH ENOUGH TO TURN YOUR LIGHTS OFF BECAUSE SOMEONE TOLD YOU TO, YOU ARE AN OFFICIAL SUPPORTER OF GLOBAL WARMING.

Tungsten steel you can recycle, and its in high demand. CFLs contain toxic mercury. In California, it's already illegal to throw them away. If one breaks and the authorities find out, the costs of bio hazard cleanup are enormous. There is a VERY important reason why you need to recycle these bulbs.
