Concentration-camps all the way. And as soon as we get communication and television up and running again, we subjugate them to indoctrination though television and movies.

Wouldn't happen, sorry. If an alien species came in to take our planet we could do little to nothing to stop them. think more like "the day the earth stood still" and less like "war of the worlds". The distances to the nearest stars let alone habitable planet would mean they could very well be thousands or hundred of thousands of years ahead of us technologically. We would be wiped out with little effort on their parts should they choose to.
We could assume, of course, that these aliens aren't morally retarded like humans are, and have mastered things like space travel and cloning and know the secrets of the universe, while us humans have mastered... guns.

And so the aliens come to "claim Earth from the lesser species," to find that the lesser species is armed to the teeth with primitive (yet effective!) ballistic and nuclear weaponry. And the aliens, y'know, get their asses handed to them via means of being fucking killed with bullets. It makes sense; it's like poor old Columbus being eaten by savage island tribes.

It depends, are you asking what should we do or what would we do?

I suspect we would subject them to the full fury of our revenge, we would be unable to restrain ourselves. Although, that of course depends on the nature of their occupation, if it was fairly friendly, maybe they'd survive us.

I believe we should capture them and, using whatever methods of persuasion are available to us, try to extract from them as much useful information about their technology and culture as possible. Our approach to this may range from trading knowledge for their freedom, all the way up to torture. Those of you who object to such means may wish to consider all the lives that could be saved with access to the kinds of technology capable of launching an interstellar invasion.

I don't think we would win against an army of aliens that has mastered interstellar travel before we do.

They'd have us beat intellectually and technologically. We'd only stand a chance if somehow our atmosphere was making them less intelligent with each passing day.
Depends how badly we want to win, or better yet, how much we feel like spiting their asses.

Kill 90% of our race and want our planet?

Fine. Nuclear darkness+winter+summer and such a badly damaged atmosphere and radioactive surface that the planet will no longer be able to support life or possibly even liquid water, motherf****rs.
Enjoy.

Now, if we're using OPs situation, the solution is fairly simple. Create a POW country and leave the aliens there sitting on top of, say, 1/8th the earths nuclear weapon stash set to detonate every month unless one of 3 random humans enter codes and use that for a peace/blackmail treaty.
Once peace is established, we proceed to create weapons capable of permanently rendering a planet inhospitable. (2x salted 500 megaton fusion nuclear devices in the atmosphere, 4x 100 megaton under the surface, perhaps?)

And then we fuck their homeworld up completely and utterly and allow 75% of the POWs to leave to tell the other races of how much of a bad idea it was to make us mad and keep the other 25% to study and possibly even introduce into our society, or, if they're close enough, in a few years maybe even expand the human genepool with theirs.

If this actually happened there is zero doubt in my mind that the surviving remnants of humanity would torture and execute them, maybe saving a few in special prisons for science purposes.

Kill them and eat them. Imagine what alien would taste like. Super duper exotic flavours. Like a space orgy on your tongue and everyone is firing their flavour lasers.

Build The Matrix and put them in. We can then observe them and get far more information than we could by torturing leaders.

I say forgive them and try to integrate them into our culture, it sounds rather silly and myabe too optimistic but let's remember that what they did is not much different from what humans have done in the past the prime example being the USA of course, I mean do you think the English colonists should have been exterminated because they came to America and committed genocide to the cultures living there so they could take over?
I mean a lot of the trouble that was caused because of that has been healing over time and is finally changing for the better so I think the aliens could be integrated too.
This. We assimilate them and then what choice would the Re-Invasion force have? It would be interesting politics for sure...

Let them live, but keep a close eye on them so they don't form resistance movements or call in the authorities. Treat them as equals and try to befriend them. Remember that the aliens here have a galaxy spanning empire, so there is no point in continuing the war.
As soon as the world, or even the majority of the landmass has been reclaimed, declare peace and rebuild the world together. Then, when the alien fleet returns, let them see that we are forgiving and not hostile, and there will be no reason for them to exterminate us, and perhaps then an official peace can be declared between our species.

Five words: The War of the Worlds.

Unless the invaders happen to have plot convenient resistance to the bacteria and viruses found on Earth (which I doubt), all we have to do is stay alive long enough to let our microscopic allies take care of them for us.

Well if in their culture it is alright to enslave "lesser species" perhaps the argument could be made that, because we have broken their hold over us, we are no longer quite as "lesser"?

Probably stick them in holding camps as we prepare ourselves. Not death camps or anything, just a place where they can be kept alive but monitored until we decide what to do with them once and for all. I'm going to assume that the aliens didn't pack up all of their tech or anything, so we have access to it. We could use that tech to help shore up our defences until the aliens do return, at which point we negotiate the return of their colonists in return for them leaving us alone.

I mean, retaking an entire planet must gain some kind of respect from the greater galactic community right?

Ok. Optimal outcome. Assuming they did not do a complete wipe out of our intellectual and tactical minds and that their main fleet is not present, we should theoretically be able to infiltrate, sabotage and employ industrial and political espionage and eventually overthrow their rule. Whatever was left of their population should be allowed to stay and assimilate however notified that if they make a false move they will be made an example. We should then proceed to learn even more about them,in-depth study (by peaceful means) of social and political order, biology, technology, military tactics. All that assuming their FTL drives are not advanced enough to make the journey in less than...say five years. Then open up comm-channels, set our conditions for at least neutral co-existence. Should they fail to comply, we will make clear that when given the chance (which we have had) we are a military force to be reckoned with. Then proceed to decimate their forces but leaving the civilization as intact as possible.

However, knowing what us humans are like, we will most likely get all the knowledge by force and proceed with remorseless annihilation.

Worst possible scenario, as some have pointed out, orbital bombardment, persecutions on surface after uprising attempts and eventual extinction of our species

I say just shove them somewhere and keep a downright oppressive eye on them. Replicate their technology, and hopefully take to the stars and look for Allies against the offending race/alliance. In my ideal situation, the two coalitions wouldn't go to war, but agree that humanity has earned a place in the galaxy. The surviving aliens would be sent back, and our relationship with our former oppressors would be cold if we have any further contact at all.

If we can't find any other races, then I fear we might end up going Ender's Game on them (Maybe not to that extent, but there would have to be retaliation). Can't really say how the real world would react to that in the long run, but if they are persistent, then it might be our only choice. I guess the survivors would have to go as well.
Unless of course they accept defeat.

I just really don't want an interstellar war. My idea's rely on the shock of defeat, but that may be enough.

Press them into service to create their technology. Execute all who resist. The survival of the human species is at stake, so we can't afford to be nice

Easy.

First we build these massive underground bunkers, move all the survivors in them, drop nuclear bombs everywhere, then after the bunker overseer gives the all clear, we use a terraforming device to clear all of the radiation out and reform the land!

I'd probably be one of the ones dying when they invade.

Exile. First just confiscate all the alien-tech, put them in some rockets and thank them for culling the mankind. Then just push the button and off they go. Or if you really want to get rid of them after the "Humane-you-cannot-drop-to-the-aliens-level"-morons are glad of your "humane" way of sending them home, the rockets hit the Sun.
