On one hand if this affects sales negatively il be happy because punishes EA for doing this, on the other hand its sad that the companies they own will lose money for great games but EA is being dickheads and will likely fire people to make up for profits

i hate EA so much, so as such i will not buy any of their PC games, console games i will buy but only if they are amazing and the actual developers deserve to get paid for their work

Could people please spread this news to various other sites and forums you use, the more outcry this causes the more attention it gets and at the very least will creat a chance, even only a small one, to have this changed.

just as a guide for everyone who does download it, and you dont want them monitoring what you do, simply open up task manager and remove it from your memory. if it isn't on your RAM it cant monitor anything you do. open it up play bf3 (because that will be the only game people will have for the use of origin) and then remove it from your RAM and hey presto they cant collect any of your data.
Umm wot? It's still running while you're playing. It could be collecting any data concerning what's on your computer during that time. Including stored browsing history.

Also, I think the Norwegian Data Inspectorate will have a problem with this.
Also an EULA alone does not satisfy the informed consent provision of the EU Data Protection Directive. A privacy notice is required to be much more visible to the user.

I know Norway is not in the EU, just pointing out how it might go down elsewhere.
We're not in the EU, but have many (I think all but one) directives through the EEA-agreement. So it might still apply here.

Will they know what other games I have on my PS3? /gasp.

I can see where PC players would be rising up against this, but as a console user I am not sure I am even effected.

I have three games via Origin. The third one appeared in my Games list tonight after I had to make a phonecall to EA to say that somehow, my ME2 disc (Disc 1) had disappeared into thin air. It has. I have no idea where it is, it's not in any other game box, jewel case, cd jewel case, anywhere. It's gone.

So EA gave me a digital deluxe edition via Origin, because what I'd originally purchased was the Collectors Edition. I couldn't afford a new game, it was that simple. Because yes, even £12 is an awful lot when you don't have money to spare.

I don't hate Origin. I hate the fact it lacks an in-game screenshot feature, but I'll deal with it. I would far, far rather play a game I enjoy and/or was looking forward to for some time than shoot myself in the foot because a) I can't understand how EULA's work and b) I'm going to throw a tantrum because the EULA has been spoken of to have some pretty damn clear wording about what they do.

Yeah, I can be called a sheep for just 'going along' with EA's little plan. In reality? I enjoy my games, and I don't plan to let EA ruin them for me.

Well, here's to hoping that Valve can win EA back (which they seemingly intend to do) because no way am I installing Origin.

Also, here's to hoping The Old Republic won't make me use Origin despite me getting a hard copy. I like my basic human rights thank you very much.
EA have stated multiple times that all future EA games will use Origin despite you buying a hard copy...
Let's see what I have to do to cancel my preorder.

Seriously, you people notice this NOW?!
Unless you didnt know its always been like that and not only for EA! If your to lazy to read the EULA youre the only one to blame.
I actually like that EA are honest with you in the fact that they say what the are going to do (well, not all but a part) when you have agreed to the terms, unlike many other that you often interpret as harmless but a when you dig deeper you se that they are just as "rotten" as EA!

But i have only one question to everyone: How does this really affect you? Now that you know what they have always been doing.

That is spyware. That is illegal. What I do the internet is my business. My computer, my jack off time, my rules.
Sure, you own the products but they own the licenses wich you agreed to! Also, you really think that your internet distributor or Microsoft, Firefox, Google etc. doesnt know what kind of porn you look at?

This is spying, plain and simple, and I'm fairly certain it's against the law. Can't we do anything about this?
Its not spying if you agree to the terms, so to answer your question simply dont install the program! Cant have the cake and eat it at the same time:/

On another note, why are everybody against Origin? And dont give me the bs thats its inconvenient i mean how hard is it to open up a different program then Steam!
Unless you dont remember how its was with Steam in the begining let me refresh your memory!
It was inconvenient since not everybody had broadband back then, all Valve games required it and they were the only one's to have games on Steam and the updates was an mess in it self.
I seem to remember that all the complaints i've heard about Origin are the exact one's i heard about Steam for years before they got there act together and brought bigger titles to there store!

Plus, since when has a little competiveness hurt the users:p

Just wanted to say that I love you. And you pretty much summed up why I hate all EULA's. They are sickening things that either need to be removed completely, or heavily changed.

But what's more sickening is the fact that people don't seem to care, and just accept it.

Well ok, not really, but EA's Origin does watch everything you do on your computer.

If you read the End User License Agreement for Origin it states that by installing Origin you're giving EA the right to monitor your PC and to make a profile of you, including what programs you have installed (and whether you have any illegally downloaded material), what websites you use, etc., and that EA reserves the right to share or sell this information to third parties.

Why have I heard NOTHING about this yet? Where is the outrage? Is it just that no one actually reads the EULA, or is it that in the age of facebook no one cares about people monitoring everything they do?
I am not particularly outraged by this because I haven't been dealing with EA in ohhhh 7 years now. And all I can say is, its great! EA is about as trustworthy as an Ex-Convict in an open bank vault. I can see nothing has changed.

Slightly disturbed by this. Maybe if we all started some form of action, like reposting this all over every forum we use. to all those who say "you only noticve this now, all EULA do this. That is no defence and if i am not mistaken this is the only one i have read that says it can take anything and sell it on. please my friends, spread this and make sure people know, i want to play BF3 but i will be happy to forgo that if EA does not get it's act together, they may simply not realise hopw this could effect their sales. keeping in mind that when gamers scream boycott. they often just don't.

if you are going to boycott EA, F*CKING do it. if not, enjoy your internet/download history being sold to news companies so they can report on how "Our youth are porn addicted criminals."

Get the word out. Anonymous is not pleased.

Oh no! So you mean to say that if I have Origin I'll get spam mail based on what it thinks I like? That's horrible! This is a completely new thing that will ruin everything forever! And you say it'll detect pirated software? How dare EA try to fight against an illegal practice! What has the world come to?
So, I'll be coming to your house on Thursday. Just in case you might have drugs there, I will root through all your stuff. Then I will write down every piece of information I can get my hands on and sell that information to anyone who will buy it. After all, drugs are bad, mkay?
I know this is taking it far, but I still feel your comment is ridicolous. Also, I think the Norwegian Data Inspectorate will have a problem with this.
Forewarning: I make no claim to being up-to-date on privacy laws in the US

What you suggest is, here in the US, completely different from what EA is doing. Physical privacy laws prevent something like that from happening (although, it's so impractical for a company to search everyone of it's users houses that I doubt any would even if it was legal). Digital privacy laws were enacted decades ago and, as you can imagine, rather out of date. I would imagine this gives EA some legal ground to stand on.

Repeating myself from eariler: I don't condone / support what EA is doing. I also don't support swearing off everything EA publishes because you don't like something they're doing. You're allowed to buy EA games and petition them anyway.

And just an afterthought, EA might just have this clause in the EULA as a backup plan. They might have no intention of searching your computer unless you give them reason to. Yes, I know that's extremely optimistic and improbable, but EA has done similar things before.

I guess it would depend on whats in the vault. Either way they know they can either get away with it, or get away with a minor slap on the hand. So WHY NOT?!

Personally I feel that a professional business shouldn't behave that way.

Well, looks like EA will be getting even LESS of my money in the foreseeable future.
That is to say... None.

Until Dead Space 3 is released.
