Easy games you enjoy not for the challenge.

Filthy casuls!

So I was thinking that whilst I enjoy a good Dark Souls now and then or highest difficulty checkpoint rinse and repeat FPS slogfest, I also sometimes like to play games that pose no challenge to me whatsoever anymore, either through perfectly mastering the combat or just the game being inherently easy, or you just prefer to play on easy settings. Whether it be for the power trip or just to play games in a more relaxed manner.

Elder Scrolls and Fallout games come to mind, all the fable games I played(and I stayed a fan of that sadly potential wasted series to buy quite a few of them) Prototype 1 and 2 might have the briefest moments of difficulty, but that doesnt seem to be intentionally designed difficulty curve rather than just awkward parts, but for the most part is a monstrous rampage power fantasy of blood and gore as the mortals tremble before you.

Anything like that guys?

To be honest, I play most games like that. I barely play any game for the challenge, Dark Souls being an exception. I played Skyrim for the exploration and awesome, if shallow, world. I played Fallout 4 for some easy gunplay while scavenging and building my own strongholds. Far Cry Primal because I like playing caveman at times. Mass Effect 1, 2 and 3 for the story, world, and Me2 and 3 also for the combat. And the list goes on.

To be honest, of course I like challenge in most games. But challenge is relative. Something like Skyrim on easy can be challenging for me if I just want to dick around (no specific builds, just doing whatever) and play while only half paying attention.

Every game I play is like that. I play games to relax and enjoy myself, not a challenge.

Cookie cutter third person shooters. I actually enjoyed the gameplay of Spec Ops: The Line.

Narrative based games where difficulty doesn't really factor in. Like the Telltale style games or the occasional good walking simulator. I guess classic style point and click games as well. I prefer the ones that don't rely on idiotic moon logic to progress.

Exploration focused games I prefer to not be too difficult. Whether it be an open world Elder Scrolls style game or a Metroidvania. I don't want to do a whole bunch of exploring only to get beaten down and lose all that progress. And a higher difficulty messes with the game flow for me. Those types of games I want to constantly be moving forward, not hanging around dealing with tough enemies (although I do enjoy a good tough boss battle from time to time).

There was a game called Spartan: Total Warrior for the PS2 (possibly other consoles too) which I'll freely admit wasn't a great game but was always great for catharsis. Just switching it onto easy and letting swarms of Roman legionaries with no armour and shitty shields come charging at me so I can hack and slash and magic-zap them into oblivion. Ahhhh, great for relaxation

Whilst I generally play games for challenge, I will occasionally play FPS on an easier difficulty if I keep loosing just to relax and come back with a clear head.

The pontiff knights in Dark Souls. After I came so close to the next bonfire one got me and I spent the next half an hour just dying over and over again to the first one. I decided I had to take a brake, played some mindless shooter for a bit and was able to get past them when I went back to it.

Its probably a confidence thing, if I get my arse handed to me I feel less confident next time, so if I can hand some random NPC's their arse then my arse will feel like it can take on the harder bad guys again.

I've always loved Kirby games for that. A cutesy game with nice over-the-top gameplay but not too much challenge. Right now, I'm enjoying Stardew Valley, which doesn't rush you on anything.

Mirror's Edge. Generally not a hard game, except for a few tricky parts. Mostly I just love the visuals and the feeling of momentum and being able to rapidly but smoothly navigate a level in an unconventional manner, while occasionally being shot at.

Also the Telltale games. All story, no challenge beyond hoping your 'Q' key doesn't break.

Kirby games, least the mainstream platformers. Pretty easy overall but well animated and great music.

Same. It can be a very relaxing game, unless you are alergic to first person platforming, or plan to compete in time trials.

Other than that i find city builders pretty relaxing. Problem is, it's been years since i've played that type of game. I should go and finally buy Cities: Skylines...

Okami. Not a challenging game, unless you factor in the "dedication" you have to input to 100% the game.

Okami... most of the Zeldas... Torchlight... some of the RoTK games. But frankly, when they started trying to turn it into a hard tbs empire builder I got turned off the series. I preferred it when you could just simply be a roaming super-commander, giving the finger to all rulers while verbally slapping intellectuals was awesome.

The verbal fights were just so over-the-top, with strategic insults feathered into reason. Where people flinched in pokemon like fashion. It was glorious. Spend years talking to old people, patting stray dogs, and going to the market. Observing a visually developing city (seeing each region from as if a rooftop) that you're in with a sense of pride that you've done *nothing* to help it grow.

It's the only VGs I can definitively say is "Bourgeoisie Simulator."

(Edit) Oh... and all TES games since Morrowind. The temptation to just walk around, with a crafted spell that mechanically acted like Lina Inverse's Dragon Slave, and doing nothing but wandering the roads and torching bandits is both strong and fun.

The only one I could add to this great list is Kingdoms of Amalur. I felt it had a satisfying story.

Pretty much everything I play. Sure, I can play games in challenging ways and am pretty good at hard-modes and that, but it's just... I have much more fun on easy difficulties than I do hard ones.

Things like Pokemon, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, World of Warcraft, Paper Mario (thousand Year Door) are all games I play that I don't do any weird challenges in.

Other games like Dead Space and Fallout, I tend to play on higher difficulties due to balance problems. When you can strap a rocket launcher to another rocket launcher that slows down time or obliterate a Deathclaw from 500 meters out with a single shot, I tune the difficulty up to give the poor bastards a decent chance against Isaac Claarke, God of Death/Courier 6, Lord (or Lady) of Destruction.
