Depends. If I think I'll play the game again, I'll go one below hard. If not, I'll go for the hardest difficulty available.

Hard - Just how I roll.
I think it's the main way to become better at games than playing on something easier.

Whatever the default setting is. If the game has good replay value than I will play it at a harder setting.

I'm always suspicious of games where you can pause and change the difficulty.

I assume normal is default difficulty setting that the game designers had in mind for the game and designed normal to be not too difficult but still challenge.

So I recon

Easy: if you?re new to that gaming genre or finding normal too tough
Normal: the way the game is meant to be played
Hard: for the challenge of beating :p the worst the designers can throw at you

Personally I prefer when games have one overall difficulty setting like in Zelda or GTA id rather have a bigger game than replay a smaller game with more annoying baddies

Though sometimes this can fuck up when a game AI is way too easy
e.g.
Black and White 2 :(
Assault a god with 25 guys and 1 catapult

Hard. Because as videogames are made more and more for casual gamers the difficulties have changed a bit.

What was previously "Normal" is now "Hard". The current "Normal" was called "Easy" in the past and "Easy" is "A blind, one armed baby can succeed without loosing once"

I usually start Normal because I tend to play a lot of story-based games and I'd rather enjoy the story the first go round. Then I'll go Hard and then Extreme if I really like the game and want the achievements.

Normal then either hard or super hard...depends on the game. Goes for pretty much anything other then rhythm games rb/GH.. i just dive straight into expert on those.
*edit. however play something on normal on a system thats at least 15 years old and it puts todays standards to shame. Games were way more difficult back then. Me and a few friends of dusted off the old nes a few weeks ago..and after a few stiff cartridge blows and a slight push to the right we were getting owned by the comp in numerous titles. Couldn't even get through mario brothers got to like 5-2 i think. Kinda bummed that the light gun doesn't work on plasmas :( Lucky ducks >:D

Easy.

All the fun of the game with less dying or "you lose" screens. It's like, "if all that matters is I beat the game, why beat it on a harder difficulty?"

Generally easy, unless there is a good reason to kick the difficulty up. I don't like game that just make enemies take more to kill them. Halo 3 was an example of what I do like although the enemies got tougher there was a genuine difference in the challenge.

I start on easy to get a feel for the controls and the flow. Then I quit and go to normal. I usually don't do hard unless there's a significant benefit. i.e. more then just an achievement.

Depends.

Horror - Easy (I prefer the experience to be more scary than frustrating)

Shooter - Normal (Sometimes I will play on easy just so I can feel a false sense of badass-ery.)

Racing* - Hard

*Only on certain racing games, because some dumb down driving too far, those are the ones that I play on Hard. Then you have some obscenely hard ones that I play on either Easy/Normal

Hard, you get good at the game that way. If it's just for the story though, go for normal.
