I play on normal the first time through for the story, and then on the hardest difficulty for fun afterwards.

Normal. Hard just adds more tediousness (is that even a word?) to the game for me, mostly. However, if there are 4 difficulty settings, I usually take the harder one of the middle two.

COD I normally play on normal just because I can't handle those fucking grenades.
This...fucking COD. I hate hate HATE those damn grenades. Half of the time I can't get out of the way in time, or I end up running right into another one. Also, my reaction time apparently sucks because I can never throw them back in time, so I've given up on that.

Oh well.

Normal to get the hang of the game then switch to hard when I'm feeling like I'm up for it.
By the way, does anyone get the strangest feeling that most games today are pretty much easier then that just gave you 3 lives and no save options.(or at least limited saving options)
That's because back in those days either:

a) games were shorter, or
b) they were score based, or
c) they were at arcades, so they forced you to use more money to keep playing

I tend to play on easy, unless it's too easy. I just have too many games to play to make things difficult.
However, If I'm replaying a game, I'll go up a level.
Trying to get through Frontline on Normal and it's bloody hard.

I never understand hard, though. I mean, personally, I hate dying in a game. Starting the same task over and over fustrates me, and I usually cave in and go do something else at that point. Is it just me? Am I the only one that likes to run through a game with relative ease and fluidity? I find it adds to the immersion to not continually watch myself die and magically reappear.
Im the exact same way, I want to know the story and continue the flow of the game. Not to be punished for every little mistake I make in the first level and just give up never learning the story.

Sorry, but I almost always pick the 'easy' or 'normal' difficulty. Why? Well, there are a couple of reasons, but mostly because I'd frankly rather have fun than reload a battle over and over and over and over and over again because it's really THAT hard. General RAAM, I'm looking at YOU.

There's also a fair number of games that actually reward you for slowly moving on to harder difficulties, which I like, like Resident Evil 5, where you can easily unlock infinite ammo for your favorite weapon after you've beaten the game once. It's awesome- you don't have to reload or anything. Hard mode would be a breeze.

Usually play on normal and upgrade to hard if normal starts to bore me. However, if the game has an odd control scheme or is of a genre I have little experience with (third person shooters, strategy games and the like), I'll start on easy.

They say it's always best to start on the hardest difficulty. If you chose easy or normal, then all your work you put towards mastering the game feels pretty much wasted unless you go with the hardest setting first.
