Yes, Smoke on the Water is quite simple.

However, Stairway to Heaven is notorious (or famous) for being the simplest guitar song of all time.
Not simple, but I learned it pretty early on, because I loved it. Pretty much decided my entire picking style for the rest of my life.

If you use GuitarPro, do Stairway to heaven.

Other stuff I did early on:
- Enter Sandman(no shame to skip solo, I learned song first, solo after 5 months)
- Anything Green Day
- Has been said a lot, but smoke on the water has a pretty do-able solo too.
- Maybe some muse, not a lot of guitar, but if you like it, Bliss is really easy. It's a nice excercise in wristpain(at first)
- Tenacious D: Tribute, just chords, with some fingerplay. Good for learning to switch chords.
- A lot of the Offspring is great playing, not too hard.

Hope it helps. Use GuitarPro, it helps a lot, even later on.

Wander wall. How do I know? Because I chose it for my GCSE music group performance and can't be bothered to learn something difficult! According to my teacher the rhythm guitar section is hard enough (GCSE standard is around grade 4) for the course.

But still interesting. OK, I guess that rules out Smoke on the Water. Although it is easy.
Yep, every person who I know who plays guitar looks down on it as pathetically easy. Shame really...
That's because it is. Especially considering there are multiple ways to play it and get the same sound.
Whenever someone says that it sounds like guitar snobbery, surely it should be about sound as much as technical skill...

Raining Blood by Slayer its sooo unbelievably simple - the only tricky aspect is playing it at Slayer speed.

Don't get me wrong, it's a great place to start (and a great way to warm up and get back into it if you haven't played for a while), but a balance is necessary. When you can play something through pure muscle memory, it's not as fun. Of course, it's also a lot less frustrating...

If that's sarcasm and you think Stairway to Heaven is hard, LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

And yeah, don't play Smoke on the Water. Ever.
To be honest, I don't know many decent easy songs anymore... I've been playing for 8 years and all I do is find ridiculously hard songs and try to learn them xD

I suppose Franz Ferdinand songs are pretty good to start with, they give you a decent range of riffs, chord sequences and integrations of the two, without being too shitty.

^Their self-titled album, all tabbed out :D^

And if you're after tabs, the only site you should ever use is www.ultimate-guitar.com. Unless you can't find the tab you're looking for, GO THERE. It owns.

As far as Guitar Pro goes, it's not that useful. Get the free trial if you want to get higher-quality tabs, but it's not worth the money. Power Tab is pretty much the same, but free, and a chunk worse, but it does the job. Go for that, if anything.

Yngwie Malmsteen's Arpegios From Hell.

But nah, if you're looking for a nice easy song, Metallica's No Leaf Clover is both awesum and easy, just dont learn the solo if you dont feel up to it.

Pretty much anything by Nirvana though I like Drain You, very easy and sounds great... especially with the solo section...<.<
also the cord used during the solo isn't an F# or a G# it an F#D... All the tabs I've found just tell you to screw around on the fret board but I like the way F#D sounds...<.<
This tab looks about right...

Really? That solo at the end seems quite difficult to me.
