For those of you who don't know, there's apparently an upcoming game called "Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard," a new game marking the return of beloved game character Matt Hazard, whose been in the game industry since the early '80s. Well, at least he might be beloved had the franchise in fact existed as long as it claimed. Apparently this is a parody of long-lasting game franchises and quite possibly the industry as a whole, but does that strike anyone else as slightly pretentious? Sure, it can be argued that there are plenty of other series that can be labeled the same way, but this one just takes the cake: is the gaming industry due for a dose of satire? Thoughts?

well if videogames in similar genres can take satirical jabs at one another, why not the whole industry?

I personally plan to give it a look.

It is Duke Nukem voiced by Will Arnett VS. Neil Patrick Harriss. What could be bad?

Eat Lead: the Return of Matt Hazard is a 2009 action video game for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC gaming platforms. The game is being developed by Vicious Cycle Software and will be published by D3 Publisher.

Matt Hazard pits players in the role of the title character, a "legendary" gaming hero who is "returning to glory" in a new video game, some 25 years after his debut game and 6 years after his last game. In reality, the Matt Hazard character is in his first video game, with a history made up by D3 Publisher to chronicle the character's rise and fall in popularity. The Return of Matt Hazard marks Hazard's fictitious "comeback" to the gaming scene.

The game itself is to be a parody of action-gaming cliches. The October 2008 debut trailer was done as a Behind the Music spoof called Behind the Game complete with Jim Forbes narration. It chronicles Matt Hazard's successes and hardships, including Matt claiming he "nailed that English chick who raids catacombs", directly referencing Lara Croft, stating it's "how she got the job".[1] It also is the first real game in a fictional series mirroring the progression of the Duke Nukem series of games, from early 8-bit to modern consoles.
Little is known so far about the game's plot. Matt Hazard, a legendary video game character with out 25 years of video games to his credit, is attempting a "comeback" of sorts in a new game on next-generation consoles. In the game, Matt will be taking on all of his old adversaries from his previous adventures. In reality, the "comeback" game is being staged by one of his old enemies, who has complete control over the game world and manipulates the game world seemingly at will, similar to the classic Warner Bros. animated cartoon Duck Amuck.

The game is a spoof of gaming and, as such, will poke fun at many aspects of gaming and culture. Pete Andrew, vice president of product development at D3 Publsher, says, "Eat Lead parodies some of our fondest memories in classic gaming and pop culture, so gamers will have a laugh out loud experience every time they pick-up the controller."[2]

2009's Eat Lead is Hazard's return to form and the thirteenth game in the series, albeit the first to actually exist.[1]

The title character and the villain will be voiced by Will Arnett and Neil Patrick Harris, respectively.
It sounds like it could be a chuckle. Or F**King stupid and lame. And it's really leaning towards the second.

From what I've seen, I think it has the potential to be absolutely hilarious. I think it's about time someone poked fun at the 'lone macho badass rogue cop/marine/etc' character. Besides, pretty much anything Will Arnett and NPH touch these days turns to gold.

Having said that, I hope they have made sure the game is good. The gameplay I've seen looks ok, but time will tell.

As with any game idea, if the game is well-made, the idea will carry, even if the story and/or humor is stupid. How long has Leisure Suite Larry been around? And if you stand back and look at the concept for the original Mario Brothers, without considering game-play, you'll probably have a bit of a WTF?: Italian stereotypes jumping on evil mushrooms to save a Barbie from a dinosaur? They turned it into a movie, with more or less that identical plot. And remember how well that went?

I'll save my opinions on attempts at satirizing the industry/product as a whole for when the satire shows up and makes its attempt. Until then it's just Uwe Boll talking up his new movie, you know?

What I've seen of its humor so far is the interview with NPH, quoting his character's threat "Put up your Dukes, Hazard!" and uttering it in such a manner that makes you skeptical about how much faith he has in the writers. I, for one, found it hardly funny. Clever or not, that's a shitty joke.

I sense vast win potential. Comedy is FAR too under-represented in the gaming media. Just look at Bad Company, or the original Conker. Those game were riots, and pretty fun to play.

The Main Character sounds like that Squirrel in Animaniacs who was once a big time cartoon.

I don't see how this is any more pretentious than the "RPG CLICHES YOU WANT TO FIRE OUT OF A CANNON INTO THE MOON" threads that we have here every other afternoon. It could be funny, it could be painful. So far, it looks like it will be funny to me.

Well I thought it was good. Certainly was something different than the same old shooters out there.

Then again, I have a thing for military humor.

I'd play a game narrated by Yahtzee that lampooned games. It could be done in a quirky stick figure art style, maybe even a 2d side scroller. You'd get a gun that had tits and was on fire.

I have never read a post I've agreed with more. Screw Trilby. Escapist, you need to pay this man to make the above game. YESTERDAY.

Here's the plot. EA locks Yahtzee in a dungeon and forces him to play aweful games until he loses his mind and kills himself. Also he's being experimented on because he's the descendent of a 16th century middle eastern assasin.

Also, he's Jesus.

Discuss.

The comic book industry (among others), specifically the superhero genre, has had more than its fair share of over the top satires and some of them have been pretty damn good (Garth Ennis seems to be the master). I can't speak to the quality of this game, but if the gaming industry and its fans are taking themselves too seriously to handle "Matt Hazard," then I think the "pretentious" label is being pointed in the wrong direction. Satire is part of an art form's growth, and a game like this was bound to happen sooner or later.

It has to have a mini game of Peggle with Simon Pegg pegs. And when you win it, you unlock dirty postcards of Yahtzee making out with a COSplay Dizzy while a COSplay Pyramid Head...uh...lurks.

Anything to avoid finishing The Witcher, that one. But if Jesus doesn't want to play The Witcher, then I guess Jesus doesn't have to play The Witcher.

Sorry, old topic. But he really wasn't fair with that game.

Also, I realize I may have inadvertently revealed some dark personal fantasies in this post. Believe me, the shame I feel about them every waking moment is more than punishment for scarring your fragile psyches.

...Yahtzee would be fully clothed, by the way. Dizzy, on the other hand...
