I'd play a game narrated by Yahtzee that lampooned games. It could be done in a quirky stick figure art style, maybe even a 2d side scroller. You'd get a gun that had tits and was on fire.
I have never read a post I've agreed with more. Screw Trilby. Escapist, you need to pay this man to make the above game. YESTERDAY.
Here's the plot. EA locks Yahtzee in a dungeon and forces him to play aweful games until he loses his mind and kills himself. Also he's being experimented on because he's the descendent of a 16th century middle eastern assasin.

Also, he's Jesus.

Discuss.
Making yahtzee jesus at the same time while Making fun of EA is currently too high in awesome levels for it to not kill us.

But still not as awesome as Painkiller. Shurikens and lightning, man. Shurikens and lightning.

That game is hard as nutty crap, by the way.

Gearing to suck, but it could be fun for a bit like a simpsons game.
Most of the fun of the simpsons games was the humor and the cliches( For those who don't know they were cliches put in by purpose to find as collectibles)

An "out of the blue" game that parodies the industry? Yes.

A game from a franchise that claims for having lived 25 years? No.
Yes, you can make a funny game that lampoons the video game industry, but this particular joke? Ridiculous! Pyronox will not have it, I say!

I think it's awesome that they're doing this

'pretentious' is just a word used by people who don't like other people being smarter than they think they should be. Which shows what You think of game companies!! :p

Anyways, don't diss these guys out for being smart, they have a good point.
Pretentious is a word used to describe people who think they're much cleverer than they truly are, which I firmly believe this dev to be. Perhaps slightly brutish but still my belief.

Well...

video games have been lampooned in the past

Bard's Tale did it, although that game was a little too difficult for it's own good, it's hard to laugh at something that's kicking your ass.

it could be good. I could imagine it being funny, but if it pulls a lot of "Scary Movie-esque" gags for laughs, it will fail even worse then Disaster Movie.

Okay, this video alone makes me want to check this game out. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy JRPGs, but this rings true on so many levels. The text boxes are great.

They should have done more with the JRPG guy though, design-wise. Needs a little something more.

"An ellipsis? What the hell is that supposed to mean? My God, I have never understood why you guys do that!"

I love the idea of the game, I love Will Arnett, but so far the gameplay I've seen is sub-par.

Call me jaded, but I see this as just being the games 'gimmick'. So it is used heavily in the first few levels to show willing, then laziness or time constraints will just see the game devolve into a average game later.

But that's ok, because it will be satirising generic games *sarcasm*.

A part of me wants to buy this game solely because I want to beat it, see the credits roll, and at the very end have something like

"Matt Hazard will return in...

MATT
HAZARD
INFINITY

Coming 2010!"

Then have the date start climbing...

I loved the JRPG part. Especially "Penultimate Illusion". I think that it'll be a good game if they manage to make it both funny and fun to play. And to be honest, after the many humourless games of this generation, I'm looking forward to a laugh.

Actually, half way through the game it'll just cut out and say "To see the rest of the story, buy Matt Hazard two! Coming soon to the wii!" and then it will delete all your save files and your head will explode.

======================

Anyway. This has the potential to be as great as Disgaea, and the potential to be as disappointing as a Bard's Tale. What it looks like from the videos I've watched so far is that they tried to hard to parody a large number of types of games, and so fails to adequately spoof one. I liked the boss fight, though I really thought he was going to make a Quicktime event joke there.

The game play looks kind of bland though. It's kind of 3rd person shooter-y, but the close combat looks forced and the movement seems rather clunky. It could be funny... and some ideas in there are clever, but I don't know. In any case, if this fails, there'll always be Brutal Legend, right?

I really think this thread (or at least the first half of it) is over-analyzing things. What happens when you over-analyze a joke? It stops being funny. There you have it, that's why you don't like the idea.

It's taking games, pretending that they're movies, and making a game about making a movie when the movie is really a game... wait... no... what?

Whatever. It'll be a game for whatever that means, and I for one think the humor is refreshing. Lets hope they don't focus too much on it and actually make it a good game with decent replay value. Maybe it'll be the next Doom, just with a face-lift. Alot of games could use a face-lift and a re-mastering.

It sounds like it could be a chuckle. Or F**King stupid and lame. And it's really leaning towards the second.

HYUK HYUK WE CAN LAMPOON VIDYA GAMES WE'RE SO SMARTZ GAMERZ WILL LUFF ITZ. No. Really, but no.
Hopefully it'll be fun. No More Heroes attempted to parody and deconstruct the video game medium. It did so by sucking. And then using art as an excuse to suck.
