Phantom Crash for the xbox is pretty outstanding. deferentially worth hunting down. There is also its sequel S.L.A.I. -Steel Lancer Arena International for the PS2 but I think the original is better :)

Like old school first person shooters but are looking for something that totally doesn't take itself seriously and is even more over the top than a lot of old school FPS's already were? Then Rise of the Triad is something I can't stop recommending. It may not be the best in the level design department (it was running on a modified Wolfenstein 3D engine, thus it was rather limited even for its day), but what other game has a powerup that temporarily turns you into an invincible dog with a powerful melee attack that can cause enemies to explode by charging up a supersonic bark? That's right, no other game has that.

[small]Well, okay, the remake will have that too, but excluding that there's nothing else like RoTT at all.[/small]
I loved that game as a kid.

Okay, Jill of the Jungle, Jazz Jack Rabbit, Bastion, Sid Meier's Alpha Centuri and Sid Meier's Pirates are all games I can recommend

Giant Citizen Kabuto and Star Wars: Republic Commando
Both games I only know a few who have played and stumbled upon by accident

On console I hvan't played any "under the radar" games as I'm aware of

AND of course Warcraft III ;D

Oh wow! I had completely forgotten about Citizen Kabuto - I must have been about ~6 when it came out. I remember having a lot of fun, though that all I can remember. Maybe I should load it up sometime for some nostalgia feels. =)

Some of the humour in that game is absolutely gold!

It's been a long time since I played it too but we used to LAN it with friends, that was a good bit of fun :D

Papers please. It simulates the life of a border control inspector. It is still in beta though.

Broken Sword
Best goddamn point'n'click adventure game ever made. The art style is glorious, the soundtrack is divine, the voice acting is impeccable, the story is gripping and engaging, the puzzles are challenging but intelligent, there is tons of humor, it's really long. It's just got everything that make a game great, and then some.
Go buy it. NOW.

I highly recommend Shadow of Destiny for anybody who likes adventure games or Heavy Rain. It's not big on gameplay at all. Pure story and navigation, about time travel and changing your fate. One playthough is just around 4 hrs to complete, but it has multiple endings so its replay value is high.

The story revolves around Eike Kusch, who has died in the beginning of the game. He is then revived in a mysterious realm by a being called Homunculus and is given a chance to go back in time. During the game you travel between the times of 2001, 1980, 1902, and 1580, all taking place in a German town named Lebensbaum. The story very appealing, having to do alchemy, mystery, murder, and philosophy. But it's a very straight forward adventure game. There is no challenge and the "puzzles" are pretty simple. I still love it though, I have both gameplay and story heavy games in my collection and this is up there as one of my favs.

It's PS2 and PC (also theres a re-release on PSP, but I haven't played it)

This game really got to me emotionally. It's not a sad story or anything (in fact it's kind of confusing), but it gave me strong feelings of depression, hopelessness and abandonment. Plus the puzzles are well designed.
You can actually get that game in the Basement Collection as well as the rest of Team meats early works.

There's a few that come to mind for PS2:

First off, War of the Monsters. It's a one-on-one fighter featuring what are essentially movie monsters; you can fight as, among others, a King Kong knock-off, a dragon, a giant volcano-headed Tiki idol, a Gundam and a floating eyeball surrounded by lightning. The arenas are all fairly large, filled with destructible stuff like houses to stomp on, skyscrapers to climb and rubble to pick up and chuck at the other fighter. Each fighter has a decent array of attacks, the story doesn't take itself seriously and the combat is plain old fun.

I'd also recommend Samurai Western. It's a third-person hack-and-slash with really fluid combat. You play as a samurai (natch) who drops by the Wild West (double natch) on a mission of honour and revenge. Again, the story doesn't take itself terribly seriously (seeing as it includes scenes where you fight steampunk robots, a pair of wolverine-claw-wielding midgets and a seven-foot camp French man who wields a minigun and quite happily swings it around like a sword given the chance). You can kit out your samurai with a wide range of bits and pieces that give him various special effects, there are loads of different swords available, each with a different type of style linked to them with necessitates a different style of play and the game even manages to be generally funny. It's not exactly polished or perfect, but it's definitely worth a shot.

1. Silent Storm / Silent Storm Sentinels

A full-3D-realistic-physical-destructible-environments Tactical Game similar to Jagged Alliance. When it was released, it got 90% ratings and yet didn`t sell many copies. Perhaps because of the fact that only the most high-end PCs were capable of running it. Very good story, extremely addictive and intelligent gameplay, horrible voice overs. Voted "Best game noone ever played" by IGN.

Can be grabbed from GOG at ~ 10-15 dollars.

2. Europe 1400 - The Guild

Years before The Sims went medieval, this was the ultimate life simulation set in medieval Europe. But it was also a clever business simulation, a crafting and trading game, a Machiavelli-worthy game of political fights and even simulating rivalities of different dynasties over several generations. One of the best games ever made if you are into medieval politics, craftmenship, business and courting.
The problem was - it was difficult like hell, and the best part of the game, the multiplayer, had a tendency to crash the game and destroy the savegame when doing so. Well-sold in Germany, Austria, even here in the Czech Republic and Poland, still sufficient in Europe, but no chance to be successful all over the world.

3. Into the Dark

As mentioned in the "how do you play horror games thread" - don´t be fooled on that one. It is indie, it is low-budget, comedy, it is parody, it is satirical, it doesn´t take itself serious - and yet it has some very mean horror moments that can scare you to death. Got ratings from 0% to 100% (setting the all-time record on gamer-arena) but is largely unknown because German magazines were afraid to write about the game. If German prosecutors had found one more (yeah, there are some)reference to the 3rd Reich in the game, all printed magazines would have been ordered to be destroyed, and the online magazines would have been at least locked down temporarly. Noone wanted to risk that, even after German courts and the USK cleared the game of all accusations.
Still, if you are open-minded, intelligent and educated enough to get most of the jokes and references, and if you can forgive some bugs, this is one of the best (or at least great & unusual) games of 2012:

A "Trash Game of the Year Edition" including the movie "Night of the living Dead" is sold for 12 Euros at Desura:

4. Several Games by "Cosmos Design" created in the last struggeling years of the c64 for that system.

Completely agree with this post.

Blackwell Bundle Point and click game about a women and a ghost helping put ghosts to rest. Doesn't have the greatest beginning but once I got into it I found the story, characters, and setting genuinely engaging. The majority of the puzzles are good too and don't involve clicking on everything or combine everything with everything. $6 on GoG so if you have any interest in this sort of game you should check it out.

Syberia 1 and 2: Another point and click adventure game and the favourite I've played in years. I really loved the setting as the games put you in the shoes of a lawyer in an alternate universe Europe where the world runs with clockwork mechanisms. You travel to other great locations along the way that are much like their real world counterparts but not quite. This is more of a story game since the puzzles are very basic and aren't hard to figure out but for anyone who likes story games this should be right up your alley; also has a set of great characters to boot.

Kingdom Rush, Bloons TD 5, and Gemcraft: Labyrinth are great tower defense games.

Don't Starve is a very good survival game.

I Wanna Be the Guy and I Wanna Be the Guy: Gaiden make every bit of progress through the game the equivalent of beating most modern games. These games are absolute must plays for anyone who loves Mario platformers.

Desktop Dungeons (that and Eve Online) is the ultimate game for number-crunching nerds.

Mark of the Ninja has classic stealth gameplay.

Out of the Park Baseball 14 is the best baseball simulation ever.

Thomas Was Alone is a quirky and relatively psychologically deep platformer.

Hybrid Heaven on the N64. It's a sci-fi third person turn-based fighting rpg with exploration, puzzles, and some slight shooting mechanics. It's really hard to describe. Hence the word Hybrid in the title.

That is such a trippy game. I have a boxed copy for my N64. *waves obscure gaming willy about

I'd suggest Oni, a game that's not obscure so much as... nobody ever played it. It got pretty badly hacked up to meet deadlines (removal of many guns and features as well as the whole multiplayer component), but it was still badass. It was also a shameless attempt to bandwagon on the popularity of anime at the time, but still badass. Bungie fans will love the terminals.

Squids by The Game Bakers. This started as an iOS game, but it's now available on Android, Mac, PC, I think a few others like Windows Phone or possibly Kindle. The point is, it shouldn't be hard to find.

Squids (and the sequel Squids Wild West) have been described by The Escapist itself as a mixture of Angry Birds and Final Fantasy Tactics.

The game is a turn based system where you pull back on the Squids tentacles and aim them in directions to guide them around maps, defeating enemies by slamming into them or just trying to reach a certain part of the map.

Both games are fun, challenging, most of the levels have a great replay value in trying to get all 3 stars (1 for none of your squids dying, 1 for finding the secret star in each level and 1 for finishing the level in a certain number of turns)

On top of the gameplay being good, it has a REALLY well told story. I mean insanely well told. I can't wait for Squids 3 because I need to know what happens next. And the story is told by a lot of fun and interesting characters. Each character is one of four classes with their own unique abilities.

So lets see...

Looks great, plays great, sounds great, reads great, why are you all still reading this when you could be buying Squids right now?

Oh, and did I mention there are tons of hats to collect?
