Most "recent" let's say would be: Bioshock,Borderlands,The Witcher Enhanced Edition,Dragon Age Origins.

If you are interested in more old games I would recommend the "heavy" RPG's: Neverwinter Nights(including expansions),Baldur's Gate 1&2,Planescape Torment.

Since Fallout has already been recommended, I'll go with Mass Effect 1 and 2.
Mass Effect is a third person shooter.
Mass Effect is so awesome that it defies genre!

Seriously though, Mass Effect is still quite good so he should try it anyway!

You are not allowed to call yourself a PC gamer till you play it.
Let's not start that crap please.

But, yes, do play Portal it was quite good. I can't attest to the FPS\RPG games too much since pretty much the only one I've dealt with was Deus Ex.

I do recommend Titan Quest even though it's similar to Diablo II in a lot of ways. Torchlight is another similar game that is quite good.

Audiosurf is quite fun if you like your music mixed with your games, and so is Beat Hazard for that matter. These games can be gotten on Steam for less than $10US each.

Also if you can get it to work, System Shock 2 is also fucking fantastic. Getting it to work on modern OSs can be an absolute nightmare.
How do I put this, erm... If you LEGALLY own the game, I'm sure there is some morally white way that you could obtain a "file" of some sort from a CERTAINLY TOTALLY LEGIT PLACE that offers a program that makes running System Shock 2 on new OS's a snap.

If you know how to find that kind of thing, that I'm only not specifying the location of because I can't remember the name of it; not at all because that it might be legally grey. No sir.

P.S., How does VtM:B Steam edition work with the unofficial patches and mods?

Borderlands is king of this genre. It blended the genres seamlessly. Also not to troll but Fallout 3 and New Vegas can be played in third-person.

FPS-RPG specifically?

you're mostly out of luck my friend. The FPS-RPG, let me rephrase that, the true FPS-RPG is a very rare breed indeed. Prime examples are in fact Deus Ex and System Shock 2, or if your graphics card can handle it, and it'll have to be at least moderately capable, then masquerade bloodlines. More recently there is bioshock and the new fallout games... but thats quite graphically demanding on the scale of Deus ex.

Word to the wise about system shock 2, use the rebirth graphics mod and preferably play it on XP.

now I like borderlands as much as the next man, but its basically just diablo as an FPS:- my point being that diablo is more hack n'slash than RPG.. so borderlands is definately not a game i would point to as an example of an RPG, or even hybrid RPG. PLus, as fun as it is, to a point, borderlands is quite bland.

I'm 99.99% certain it's not a DRM issue, it just doesn't want to cooperate. I got it sort of working once, then everything turned pink and crashed. If the guys on through the looking glass didn't know it, its not out there lol

They work with the steam version, mine isn't steam but I know they work

I'm not sure if it's what Mr.Shine (Him Diamond) was referring to since there's no need to be so coy about it, but here: SS2 Tool v.3.5

All in one mega patch meant to make System Shock 2 playable on modern computers.

And to the OP, here's an FPSRPG everyone else seems to have forgotten: Arx Fatalis. Extremely good dungeon-crawl rpg with a unique magic system and some ridiculously solid gameplay mechanics, was made as a spiritual successor to the old Ultima Underworld PC rpg and lives up to their legacy admirably. The same developers went on to make Dark Messiah of Might & Magic which, truth be told, I also really enjoyed (Although I hear the console port was terrible!). Look em up! GOG has Arx and STEAM Dark Messiah, look em up and see if they're what you're looking for.
