Well I have mine cold. Without Alcohol. Personally I think it tastes like putting cream and a bunch of the tiny colorful Chicklets gun in your mouth at the same time. That is pretty much the the best way I can describe it. Also don't drink a lot of it at once.

Yeah, eggnog is not meant to be guzzled down, it is something you savor in a small cup or mug, like hot cocoa.

Also drinking a lot of it would probably make you feel a bit sick.

Okay well... I'm an Australian female who is looking for something different this X-mas....
Well... I have always been interested in the American love for eggnog (sorry to use the stereotype). I have a few questions:
How is it drank/eaten? Hot? Cold?
Do you use bourbon or rum??
Do people really love it as much as they say they do?
Some people say you dont need to cook it over a stove??

Also what does it taste like O.O I plan on making it this weekend and a experiment :D

What are your thoughts on eggnog?
I live in Victoria and nearing Christmas time, Paul's release cartons of eggnog, alcohol free of course. I suggest picking up a few cartons for yourself (they're only about $2.50 a carton) as they're quite delicious. You can also add your own alcohol, if you prefer, traditionally Brandy is used but Dark Rum is a fantastic substitute. Just thought I'd help a fellow Australian out.
:D thanks so much! i didnt know pauls had their own... i'll have a look at coles or woolies today.

okay to answer your question, in my experience, it's usually drunk cold (eaten? WTF it's a liquid! how...? do i even want to know?) i usually drink it plain because i like it that way, but i've heard it drank with both bourbon and rum, but i've heard rum more often, IDK about everyone else, but i love it a lot, even gone as far as to make it myself (you can find a recipe on Google), and i've never heard of cooking it over a stove... but i guess that'd root from the fact that it IS made with raw egg whites... so there's the Salmonella issue on that... but i've always drunk it normally and never got sick or anything.

In order:

Cold
No alcohol
FuCK YES!
No, you don't. I usually just get a carton of it.
And it tastes like a really milky vanilla. Its texture is very thick so you should only take about half a cup at a time. Not everyone likes it though. It's one of those things you either hate or you love.

Make your own eggnog. Store bought stuff is nothing like the real thing.

I've only seen it cold. It needs to sit for a couple of days in the fridge after being made for the flavors to deepen, so it's cold by necessity.

I've used brandy, but traditionally, it's bourbon. (After all, the "nog" in eggnog is truly nog.) However, it tastes perfectly fine without any alcohol. I prefer it without, since alcohol so easily overwhelms my tongue. I despise all things rum, so I never use it.

As far as I can tell, men seem to like it more than women. I hate the store bought stuff. I only like it when I make it myself without the nog.

There are two types of eggnog: the custard kind and the raw egg kind. Even though I have my own chickens and have little fear of sickness from my eggs, I prefer just bloody cooking the thing. If you buy eggs from the store, I definitely recommend cooking it. It's like a pudding with the consistency of cream. After the custard cools, you fold in whipped egg whites, which gives it a frothy, airy texture to complement the taste. I store it in glass milk jars.

My father and grandfather like it in their coffee. :3

Edit: Eggnog must have nutmeg, preferably freshly grated nutmeg. It must. It will taste like a regular creamy custard without the nutmeg. I also like cinnamon and the tiniest hint of clove, but that's just me.

Watch the Good Eats episode that one person provided. It truly is all you need to know.

Drink it cold, don't ruin the taste with alcohol.
Alcohol is good and all, but don't ruin eggnog with it.
I agree with this. Well, the first half anyway.

I prefer Eggnog cold without alcohol. Is wonderful.

Edit: It's also good with a pinch of nutmeg.
Yeah, nutmeg is always pretty good in it.
Also, I can see why you might not agree with the second half. A nice gash in my head from night after Thanksgiving should probably give me pause to consider haha.

I am a Wisconsinite and I drink it cold, warm isnt bad though in my opinion but cold is superior.

It can be a great dessert drink but I prefer eggnog with peppermint schnapps. A shot or two usually does it but dont go over board with any alcohol.

I love eggnog

I drink it plain, cold, and with no alchohol in it. It's one of those drinks that I love, but I can only drink so much before I'm sick of it for the next couple hours.

You're most welcome, but I'm quite certain there are a few other brands of Eggnog you can purchase, but I've always known Paul's to be be the "go to" Eggnog in Australia as it beats the hassle of making your own.

Well, like me, you must have seen Eggnog in the cold drink section at places like Coles and Woolworths. It's meant to have a bit of alcohol in it but its delicious by itself.

EDIT: You may also like to know that the Pauls Eggnog is always on sale. You cannot buy it in huge containers but you can get small cartons of it throughout the year.

Rum. Cold if you're not frozen, hot if it just snowed and you've been working outside all day.

Homemade is amazing but store bought isn't terrible sooo, either or.

ADDED: It actually matters what kind of rum though. I prefer a darker variation. Something Jamaican.

I honestly didn't even know that was a stereotype. I kind of assumed that it was everywhere. Anyway, cold, mix it with milk, drink it slow and not too much. Not doing any of that will make it feel like being punched in the stomach several times by Captain Hammer, even if you're not lactose intolerant. I can't vouch for alcohol one way or the other, I've never had the opportunity. If I remember my 7th grade science correctly though, it's currently summer in Australia. Personally, even the notion of drinking eggnog in the summer sounds disgusting. I would recommend trying it again in the winter if you don't like it this time. Granted, most Americans like myself are probably coming from a place of bias. Eggnog is a huge part of Christmas here, and it's like a liquified rose-colored nostalgia filter for most people.
