Eggnog is among my favorite drinks ever. It is truly a shame that it isn't served year round. I guess then it would diminish the specialty of it.

Whataver, I drink it cold with nothing added in spice wise. Alcohol goes well in it, but don't overload it. I usually drink a nice tall glass, but most people would rather drink a cup.

Eggnog is a great invention.

Hello curious Aussie person! Allow me to introduce you to the customary hot cider-nog.

How it's made the traditional way:
1. Take a saucepan and heat it. Medium-low flame should be okay.
2. Combine 1 egg, one cup of milk, 1/4 a cup of sugar, 1/2 a cup of cider (or apple juice works too if cider is too rough), 1/2 a cup of cream, a 1/8 teaspoon of ground cinnamon and just a sprinkle of nutmeg.
3. Whisk for 12 to 14 minutes.
4. Kill the heat. Pour into room temperature container.
5. While it's cooling, add rum or brandy if you like. Stir.

6. Shoot some whipcream and grind some cinnamon on top of that badboy and enjoy.
i like the idea of that.. the mixture of the sweetness of the cider and the creamy texture of the nog would be interesting :D

Store bought, cold, No alcohol (though my friends put rum in it for themselves), Sometimes with a dusting of nutmeg or cinnamon... and i tend to drink a carton a week (by myself). Taste... never thought of describing it before. Thick, creamy, and unique.

you drink it cold, with ice, spiced rum is the best to mix into it (here in Canada it's captain Morgans spiced rum that's best i find)
you can put a bit of ground nutmeg on top if you'd like
its hard to explain how it tastes.. but it's thick, and basically cream mixed with raw eggs and sweetened.

hope that helps

You can mix eggnog with pretty much everything, try it and see what works for you, although I prefer it cold and slightly watered down it milk.

Oh God, it is the best drink of the season. Better than Hot Cocoa when done right.

I like it nice and cold. It's like a milkshake for the soul.

No alcohol...because I'm the lightest lightweight ever. 'sigh'

And...tomorrow, I'm going to go pick up some. Thanks for the reminder.

Usually cold, but I occasionally heat it up if I'm in the mood for it.

I'm not old enough to drink, but even then, I find the idea of alcohol in eggnog rather repellent.

To reply, I will be speaking in my native accent.

Now 'round here, we like our eggnog chilly with a jigger of rum, not too spicy. Now, in a pinch ya can put some good Ol' Crow Whiskey init anit works just delightful.

I... honestly didn't know the 'nog was an American thing. I figured it was all over.
Same here. Is it really perceived as being exclusively American?

As a kid I used to like eggnog. Had to drink it plain of course. Didn't know it was a 'thing' to mix it with alcohol until I got older.

Not a big drinker either, although I used to be. I tend to mix it with spiced rum. Captain Morgan's if it's the only thing available, but my father introduced me to this amazing rum about a year ago and -whoops!- I don't remember last Christmas. I'll see if I can find out the name of it if anyone's interested.

So to answer the original questions:

How is it drank/eaten? Hot? Cold?
I drink it cold most of the time. Not very hard to warm up though if that's your fancy - stick a couple of filled glasses in the microwave for a few seconds or pour a bit into a pot/kettle and put it over low heat on the stove.

Do you use bourbon or rum??
I use spiced rum. I find bourbon, even if it's high quality, makes the drink taste flat and somewhat bitter.

Do people really love it as much as they say they do?
I have no idea. I never drink it consistently (i.e. year after year). Every now and then it sounds like a good mixer or feels appropriate at the time. You know: late winter evening, fireplace, soaked from working out in the snow (or rain as is the case here) all day. Knock a few 'nogs back and it's nostalgia tear.

Some people say you dont need to cook it over a stove??
Well that's true. You don't need to cook it over the stove, although I think that's traditionally how it's done. Microwaving does work, but a stove is preferred mainly when you're providing for many people. Also you can control the heat a lot better with a stove.

Also what does it taste like
Base eggnog tastes kind of like sweetened milk, almost as if you're drinking a milkshake or whole milk with some whipped cream mixed in. Kind of like a liquefied custard. It's hard to describe, but it's very thick (thanks to the eggs) and fairly sweet (thanks to the cream/sugar).

Also, fair warning: pace yourself or you will get paved. Eggnog cuts out so much of the 'bite' of the alcohol, and it's so much more gentle on your throat and stomach, that you can go from four to floor in seconds. And vomiting up eggnog is not pleasant.

UP DATE ON EGGNOG.

I just tried it. 1 glass without any brandy (i picked brandy because we seem to have a large supply of it for some reason) and then i had 2 glass with brandy.
it was a fantastic. i really love the nutmeg :D and the brandy just makes it taste so lovely and sweet and wonderful ^^
I will for sure be drinking it this holiday season, although i still want to try making it home made!!

THANKS FOR THE POSTS AND OPINIONS =D You have all been most helpful.

Okay well... I'm an Australian female who is looking for something different this X-mas....
Well... I have always been interested in the American love for eggnog (sorry to use the stereotype). I have a few questions:
How is it drank/eaten? Hot? Cold?
Do you use bourbon or rum??
Do people really love it as much as they say they do?
Some people say you dont need to cook it over a stove??

Also what does it taste like O.O I plan on making it this weekend and a experiment :D

SO PEOPLE OF THE FORUM.
What are your thoughts on eggnog?
Well thanks for being open minded about it :)

I drink mine cold. As cold as possible.
I have used both, but the best way to partake if you are in the drinking mood is to take some vanilla ice cream, cognac(to taste) and eggnog and mix them together in a blender. Its the perfect holiday treat. If thats not your thing, go with which one you like more (bourbon for me).
Some people go ape-shit over it. Some people loathe it. It just depends.
And I have never made it, so I don't know.

I have experienced this. You are correct on all counts. If you have not done it before for the love of all that is holy pace yourself. Having to explain to your mother that you are not an alcoholic while throwing up eggnog really kills the Christmas/holiday spirit.

Well, I can't say that I've ever seen eggnog on sale here (England btw), or ever been offered it by someone. I only know of it because of imported TV.

The closest stuff I've seen is advocaat, which as far as I can tell is a mix of raw egg and brandy. I've not (and will not) touch the stuff.

Mmmmmmm.....eggnog.

I like it cold with a shot of bourbon and a sprinkle of nutmeg on top. The best way I can think to describe the taste is like someone melted a really, really think vanilla milkshake. Keep in mind though that eggnog is pretty damned unhealthy. Probably explains what it tastes so damned good.
