I... honestly didn't know the 'nog was an American thing. I figured it was all over.
Same here. Is it really perceived as being exclusively American?
As a kid I used to like eggnog. Had to drink it plain of course. Didn't know it was a 'thing' to mix it with alcohol until I got older.
Not a big drinker either, although I used to be. I tend to mix it with spiced rum. Captain Morgan's if it's the only thing available, but my father introduced me to this amazing rum about a year ago and -whoops!- I don't remember last Christmas. I'll see if I can find out the name of it if anyone's interested.
So to answer the original questions:

How is it drank/eaten? Hot? Cold?
I drink it cold most of the time. Not very hard to warm up though if that's your fancy - stick a couple of filled glasses in the microwave for a few seconds or pour a bit into a pot/kettle and put it over low heat on the stove.

Do you use bourbon or rum??
I use spiced rum. I find bourbon, even if it's high quality, makes the drink taste flat and somewhat bitter.

Do people really love it as much as they say they do?
I have no idea. I never drink it consistently
(i.e. year after year). Every now and then it sounds like a good mixer or feels appropriate at the time. You know: late winter evening, fireplace, soaked from working out in the snow
(or rain as is the case here) all day. Knock a few 'nogs back and it's nostalgia tear.

Some people say you dont need to cook it over a stove??
Well that's true. You
don't need to cook it over the stove, although I think that's traditionally how it's done. Microwaving does work, but a stove is preferred mainly when you're providing for many people. Also you can control the heat a lot better with a stove.

Also what does it taste like
Base eggnog tastes kind of like sweetened milk, almost as if you're drinking a milkshake or whole milk with some whipped cream mixed in. Kind of like a liquefied custard. It's hard to describe, but it's very thick
(thanks to the eggs) and fairly sweet
(thanks to the cream/sugar).
Also, fair warning: pace yourself or you
will get paved. Eggnog cuts out so much of the 'bite' of the alcohol, and it's so much more gentle on your throat and stomach, that you can go from four to floor in seconds. And vomiting up eggnog is not pleasant.
