Good evening my dear escapists,
As a forward, Ive played Morrowind/expansions Oblivion/Expansion and Skyrim/Expansions, then also on the flipside I have been an avid...WoW..er..somethingish. Im not going to say its the greatest revelation since toast, nor am I going to damn it to hell. Ah-hem, nevertheless lets get this on the road for my own sake of mind, speaking it out, seeing if people agree with me or not and hopefully starting a viable discussion about certain things. As a sidenote, these are MY experiences with the game, MY hopes where it leads and MY intake on the whole game that I have seen up to this point. Long story short, Im not expecting everyone to agree with me, so I gladly will speak of anything concerning this if its vital, aka...nothing like
'I think its stupid'
"well...why?"
'because I say so'
May the mini review of my intake..begin.
So, I got this via early access, seeing as I thoroughly enjoyed Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim with all there quirky humor..massive areas and quests. There was only one thing in my mind that was missing for me personally, I really, really wished to play this with my significant other, I always thought, wouldnt it be fun to just sorta dawdle around with her a few hours and sencelessly become the greatest Kleptomaniac known to mankind, so boy was I excited when I heard of this coming out.
Now my first thought of course was 'will this be an authentic elder scrolls game? or just something with the races thats slapped together in 2 months and sold as being such?'. While not being completely what Im accustomed to from TES games, I must admit, Im oddly amused by it. I find the quests fun, I actually pay attention to the dialogue and quests. Ive yet to come across a quest that everyone whos ever played an mmo knows all too well, I believe the quest discussion with my avatar and the quest npc goes something along the lines of this..
'Rarghlbrglglgl collect 10 bear butts for me'
"why..?"
'I like bear butts..rarghl'
Most of the quests Ive encountered up to now had a meaning, and henceforth made me care about the outcome of it..not like that random farmer who wanted me to collect the bear butts for him for...what do I know. Yet while this is a + for me, I also notice that after questing for a few hours Ill get a bit Ill say, 'bored' by them, and skip through dialogues, henceforth..where I cared about a farmers cow being kidnapped shortly before, Ill look at a peasant whos family was slaughtered along the lines of 'wtv gimme my loot'. I do hope that didnt sound all too contradicting.
The combat itself is much like an ES game in my opinion, (Im not sure if this is a good thing..) the attacks wont 'properly' connect to the target and it doesnt feel like it has a large impact and what not, yet what I do find very amusing in the combat aspect is the ability to interrupt/block enemies attack, this counts towards both Monsters/Mobs and at the same time to other players. You have the ability to roll out of the way, jump back etc etc. Yet I must say the dodging attacks part, Im not sure if anyone else whos played it experienced this but the effort it takes to dodge and attack properly, 'click a direction twice in a row fast' doesnt seem to always work, so if I try to roll to the left, instead of having to click it twice, I have to click it about 6 times until I roll out of the way, making it a bit pointless at times seeing as Ill just go for the 'oh well wtv, come and hit me and Ill nuke you.' But at the same time, even though Im pushing in those grudges against the combat, I do find it quite nice that is is like an ES game in the aspect that you have to 'click' to hit. You wont just stand there and hit the mob and spam abilities, for the most part, atleast from the current content Ive seen on both the Dragonknight and the Mage (I cant vouch for the nightblade and templar seeing as I havent tried them yet) I do find combat to be interesting. Another part I do very much enjoy about it is the limited skill list you have at your disposal, henceforth, only being able to choose from 5 abilities to use at a single time, plus your ultimate that you choose. Then ofc the quickslot item (q) being..whatever you want..a pet..a potion..etc etc.
One of the biggest grudges Im shoving against the game atm is the fact that theres not alot of bagspace, as spoken, in TES games Im usually a master kleptomaniac, I collect so much crap its actually not even funny anymore. This game really punishes you for that, which I find a shame, Id like more bags and defo more bank space. The bank space is account wide meaning that...I cant even klepto-mode properly on my chars seeing as Im always out of room. In that regard also the pets are an 'item' meaning they'll take up slots in your inventory, no menu where you can click on them to summon etc. I do admit this would be a very very welcome change. Of course theres ways of extending your bag/bank space..but if your also a gold hoarder ('waves the guilty flag') you wont be buying them for a while haha.
Another thing alot of folks are whining about halfway, whilst the other side celebrates it, is the lack of an auction house. Sure, AH's are nice to make a quick coin/see what items you can buy or see if theres anything you want for proffs or vanity items. Yet to me, I welcome it that there isnt an AH, as spoken once again, this is my own personal prefference.
The Price of it seems to be.. (please dont throw bricks through my window..) justified, in my opinion. Seeing as I payed for the subscription cost of WoW for years, a subscription based mmo is no foreign concept to me. Yes there is a cash shop, but Ive never seen it. As far as Ive come to understand the only thing you can get there is a mount, and the game itself up to now. A mount is nothing that needs to be 'farmed' for properly in the game as far as Ive seen up to now, the mount will come respectively after a while seeing as youll have enough gold lining your pockets to easily buy it by the time your roughly level 20 if you do all the quests/dont repair your armor. Repairing armor is...I swear those repair npc's must be swimming in gold. But at the end of the day, Id rather pay a subscription fee going towards a game developer making a 'good' game and maintaining that game/adding new things, then not pay and have it all remain monotone and the same. Yes Im aware that f2p also add new content quite often, but its still the thought behind it that persists in my mind.
The server stability (atleast for me?) is good up to now, Ive lagged..maybe twice, and during my playing times, Ive had the server have to shut down once. There are a few quests that are bugged that Ive seen up to now, yet in my case, relogging and going in again usually fixed this problem, so I assume Ive been quite lucky in that regard, seeing as I have seen various other people who have had massive problems and couldnt continue due to those bugs.
The difficulty of the game, takes quite a swing after level 20ish, atleast for my mage. I dont know how it will be for my dragonknight but I noticed I couldnt just..dork around after level 20 and know that Ill come out unscathed. As far as Ive heard it also goes up quite a notch after hitting level 50 so I will admit, Im quite excited to get to that point and see exactly how much more difficult it is, seeing as Im usually the type of person that will play a game on its hardest difficulty so I get the 'full' experience.
I havent really done any pvp yet, so I cant go into detail about that, nor have I done any dungeons. Yet in that regard...
The one thing I have noticed about the game, if you dont want interaction with other players, you dont really have to. There are no group quests, and nothing you 'cant' do alone, except for maybe the occasional boss or dungeon or pvp, which of course then in those cases, are inevetible. Ive quite enjoyed the fact that Im able to play alone and go about my way without caring for others, Ive not been called a noob..or raged at yet, though Im sure it will come eventually, yet nevertheless, Ive been unharmed in that aspect up to this point.
The Character creation/evolution is very well done in my opinion, I spent about 30 min making my character to get it to the point where I liked the look, Ive always enjoyed TES char creations so this was right up my lane in that regard, it wasnt as detailed as Skyrim for instance, but it still allowed enough detail to make your character look unique. The skill distribution is very well done in my opinion, lots of abilities to choose from and lots of ways to play, you can be a mage wearing heavy armor and flinging around a 2h wep, it wont be the best way to play it, yet nevertheless, you can be as good as anyone else if you distribute/hone your skills properly.
All in all, I consider this as a 'first look review', my mage is now level 26 so Ive not yet seen all the content by far, Im at the third zone, and I admit I lose myself in it when I play, I enjoy my time there, and time goes fast, which is what I personally look for in a game.
So would I buy it again if I could travel back in time up to the point where I bought it? Yeah, I admit I would, I enjoy playing it with my s.o and I enjoy running around and exploring stuff. As you see, Ive not held it up to the heavens, nor have I damned it. I see it as a fully neutral viewed writing, about my own experiences. If anyone who hasnt played the game yet has any questions or would like to know my intake on anything, Id be more then happy to oblige and answer, unless of course I havent seen the content yet, in which case I wont lie and will directly tell you that I havent seen it hehe. So that is my own view on the game, as spoken, please stay respectful, dont bash, give criticism where its needed...and please dont throw any bricks through my windows..Im quite fond of them being whole, thank you very much
.
TL;DR= The game was a nice surprise in the end via quality and content. Id personally buy it again and am willing to overlook the current bugs it has seeing as it launched not but 2 weeks ago and I went through the horror that is known as the Diablo 3 launch, so Ive seen far far far worse haha.
Thank you for reading my mini review
I donno if it helped anyone in deciding if they wanted to get the game or not but I hope it gives an insight to the game itself and what is awaiting the person
If anyone has any other experiences from the game please feel free to add them, also Im more then open for critisicm or discussion in any of the points Ive listed aslong as they are, as mentioned above, respectful and prove a valid point. Thanks for your time and I wish you all a nice evening.
Edit: I hope the title wasnt causing any confusion, in the aspect of 'normal' gamer I meant it as not a critic or someone who solely buys a game to review/judge it
Edit 2: I see this post has been moved, Im sorry I posted it in the wrong area, thank you for moving it to the proper area though. Thank you and, my apologies
