It's what I'm going to start calling egotistical masturbation. They want to feel better about themselves so they insult the crap out of you. I know some RPG fans who just love claiming that their smarter than everyone because they prefer the original mass effect to the second one and who absolutely love the witcher because it's complicated and makes them feel smart. Then they call me stupid because I prefer games like saints row 2. But they're the ones that need to insult people to feel good about themselves, and in the end I think it's actually a much sadder life then those of the people they insult. Words only have power if you get offended at them. Remember that.

we all need to be good at something. if the things I'm good at have no real value in life, I'd be a dick too. People like that are everywhere, not just gaming. they don't want acceptance, they want to shoot you in the face and tell you how bad you suck afterwards.

I think TF2 is a great example of elitism, at least, from my point of view. As you all know it recently went Free to Play (wich is a great thing). The problem here is that the Team Fortress community completely divided in 2 groups : The Free to Play "Noob" and the paying "Elites". You all know that when you start playing a game, in pretty much in every gendre, you are just "Bad" at it, you are not used to the engine, the tactics, gameplay, ect... That is what made all Free to Play players "complete noobs".

After a while (Let's say two weeks), the problem is still the same, but some people even created a modification that is kicking F2P players from servers since they "Infect their fun"... From my point of view, it is completely pathetic.
Oh no! And I'm still training myself offline! I've just gotten pretty decent at sniper aiming in easy mode, but normal mode is proving difficult and once I find a good sniping perch, I tend not to want to move, making me a prime target for everyone...

I guess the problem is that the facelessness of the internet. In spite of not knowing or seeing the other person, we tend to take things personally. I consider myself quite a good sport, but I've actually played Portal 2 Co-op with a random stranger who had actually finished it before, and I was proving quite slow at figuring things out. It didn't help that this person didn't communicate at all beyond pinging (how could you finish co-op without a microphone or knowing how to bring up the text chat?). My co-op with random strangers prior to that was fairly pleasant as the other ones were helpful and communicative, but that one incident was enough for me to wait until my friend got it.

Most of the elitist in my opion are ppl who have done almost nothing more than play that one game for hours on end. Thus they get really good and seek better oppents. Then come the wannabes. Since they cant put in all the time in they make do by going against the noobs. Which means u have some good players beating up the little guy, and slowly the mentality makes em into trolls. Elitist are either good people or they have made the game thier life.(They also lose sight of the gameplay 2, thinkin a healer should kill, or the game is theirs. The latter i mean.)
