Emergency! X360 Red Ringed and I got a review to finish till tomorrow!

I know this sounds retarded as hell, but try baking it in the oven! I'M SERIOUS!

Set it to 385 degrees, wait for it to preheat, and bake it for 10 minutes. Bull out your hard drive and what ever else you have plugged into the back of it... like one of those ridiculous wireless receivers.

Basically, this melts, and reforms the broken solder joints that have degraded over time due to the temperature extremes in the Xbox. The crappy solder they used was, in fact, the reason for Microsoft's billion dollar fiasco.

Anyway, I assume to responsibility if you screw up and kill you Xbox or burn down your house. If you still aren't sure(I know I wouldn't be), go search Youtube. There are at least a couple hundred videos proclaiming this fix.

It all depend on many light came up when it red ringed.

1 is a hardware failure and easily fixable

2 is a overheating issue so just leave it sit and you should be fine.

3 means your fucked.

4 rings means your cables are not in properly. another easy fix.

DAMMIT, why's it always 3 :'(

I'm not a huge X360-fanatic, but I keep one of each console in my home for journalistic purposes. Now, my 360 red ringed me. Red ringed me good. And I haven't really followed the Red Ring-phenomenon, so I'm kind of stuck.

Are there any known fixes to this problem - other than giving it to Microsoft or some random engineer, since that isn't an option right now? In case you're wondering: it red ringed as soon as I fired up the consoled, so it didn't snap because of overheating. (So I doubt that the 'towel and a fridge'-therapy my buddy suggested will do any good.)

Sometimes it might be 3 red rings because the power cable isn't in properly or has dust or something, happened to me blew the power cable to remove dust stuck it back in and it worked perfectly, its RROD'd on me 3 times but it was never fatal.

Otherwise your only other choice is to either send it in to Microsoft if you have a warranty or fly kick it from across the room and buy an Elite or the new 360 which have a new motherboard and fans so they dont RROD as easily or randomly

1) Buy a new arcade unit from a big box store with a generous return policy (wal-mart, Best buy, etc...). An arcade unit should be around $150 new (don't forget to keep the receipt).

2) Finish your review.

3) Call MS and see if your (old) box is still under warranty. If so, send it in when you get the "coffin" (cardboard box to return your xbox in).

4) Wait until your box is returned (hopefully it's within the 30 day return policy).

5) Return the arcade unit to the big box store you bought it from for a full refund or if your original console isn't under warranty keep the new arcade unit.

Failing that, buy the store's warranty they try and sell everyone, they can't refuse a return then (though you're out the cost of the warranty).

Unless you wanted a solution more ethical than a free rental from a huge multi-national corporation... in that case I have no ideas

Wrap the console in a towel, turn power on, leave for 30 minutes. It's a temporary fix, it will fix your console until you turn it off again.

Actually, it's pretty much the other way round, 3 red lights is usually fixeable with the x-clamps fix, while 1 red light is more likely for it to be dead. oh and btw, repeated uses of the towel trick will permanently break your console, the best long term fix is the x-clamps fix (although even that is still not the best it could be).

The RROD is due to an overheating problem that actually warped your system components inside. The trick your thinking of is to put a towel around your 360 and put it in the oven. The idea being that if you heat it back up again that perhaps the components will bend back into a workable condition. There ARE people who have gotten lucky with this method apparently, but for the most part it's a desperation move.

Typically the only solution is to either send your 360 back to Microsoft for a replacement if it's under warrenty, OR buy another one if you can't wait or your system is no longer under warrenty.

Up until fairly recently with warrentys for the first ones expiring the RROD has mostly been an annoyance due to the weeks/months long dance with Microsoft to call them, ship it out, have them confirm "yep it's fried" and send you another one. That said the RROD is such a standard problem they are unlikely to give you trouble if the warrenty is good.

Incidently, putting your 360 into the oven does void it's warrenty, however if it's the RROD chances are it's not going to do anything they are going to notice when you send it in, which is why there are people who have actually done this before sending their system in. Even if it's like a 1% chance that things heat just right and settle back into position, that gives you some more time with the system before sending it in if your not close to the warrenty.

So, as ridiculous as it sounds if your review is that close to due, wrap up your 360 for protection, stick it in the oven, turn your computer to Microsoft's home page, and then kneel before it and incant prayers to Bill Gates. Perhaps thou shalt be blessed.

Or just forgo the nonsense, dig out your warrenty, and if it's not expired make the call, and prepare for a long wait.
