Endings that genuinely surprised you. (risk of spoilers, obviously)

*AFTER CREDITS SPOILERS!! WARNING!!

The ending of Dragon Age 2 was really quite good. And given the trend of games these days, I can't actually remember a better one in a decade honestly. And the level of love and betrayal in the game makes you get attached to or mad at the characters in it. It is the first video game that I would say is as good as a book. And that is quite surprising since I really hated it for the first 1/3. I'm glad I decided to stick with it and get my money's worth out of it. Solid story lines and voice acting can really make up for the flaws the game has. I am looking forward to their next offering again finally. :)

Oh, and having a Florence and the Machine song at the end didn't hurt. If you sit through the credits and get the "yay, you made it through the game" you get a couple of specials although not actual quests. And if you attempt to go out, you can have whomever your love interest was show up at the mansion again. It was a nice touch, although I thought for a moment it gave 2 mini missions to go on which I thought was a super idea. Hopefully they do that next time instead of the special goodies.

End Spoiler Alert.

Call of Duty 4. Having pretty much everyone die was a ballsy move (One they pretty much killed in Modern Warfare 2, WHICH SHOULDN'T EXIST)At most I was expecting to lose gaz, get air lifted out and live to kill Zakhaev, but damn, they sure as hell didn't pull punches with it.

Agreed on all points. I always like seeing another person that doesn't dissolve into a flaming ball of hate at the mere mention of DA2. It had its flaws, but I quite liked it, and... as the title of the thread says... I was surprised by its ending. Pleasantly surprised by how good it was (in my opinion, at least) and genuinely surprised at how it played out.

I will list it in the games that I remember.

KotOR: Completely and utterly shocked me the first time around. Looking back, I don't know why I never saw it coming.

Jade Empire: I didn't see it. I trusted my dear master. I saw no reason to screw over an entire village and all that trouble for one person, but then again, I'm not a Chessmaster going after ultimate power.

Bioshock: Again, completely shocked me. And again, don't know why I never saw it. Game was too short for just Andrew Ryan to be behind it.

Dragon Age 2: It's been a while since I had a game make me go "What the bleeding FUCK just happened? Why did you do that? What the hell, man?" It was coming, and hindsight is a ***** like that.

AC:B: That one I never saw coming and still don't understand why it happened. So for this one, either I'm just way too trusting of people or it's staring me in the face and I'm too blind to see it.

So apparently, I take things at face value way too often. I really need to stop that.

When Zelda dies at the end of Skyward Sword, making a final wish on the Triforce for her and Link to be together for all time, even if it means in different lives.
And then the twist that this is what inadvertently binds Ganon to them and causes all the problems in all future Legend of Zelda games. NEVER saw that coming.

Or when Sully died in Uncharted 3! And he's DRAKES FATHER!? wow.

Or that final fight with the Soulless Dragon at the end of Skyrim? That was epic.

The Joker freaking died!
Didn't ever expect to see that, in fact there was a whole lot of that action going on throughout the game.

you're the bad guy, sent back in time to make yourself a better rival to the beast, maybe I'm a little slow here, but didn't see that coming

I'm sure there have been many over the years, but these are off the top of my head

avatar, when it didnt end, same goes for dragon age 2

as for games, mmmmmmmmmm, crysis 2
Which Avatar are you talking about? James Camerons Avatar? If so, had you never seen a movie before that?

I know it's been said but Portal 2. Also the ending to Arkham City really blew my mind. Especially if you go back into the Steel Mill and see Harley's test.

Legacy of Kain: Defiance by being the ending to the entire series and not having a freakin' ending.
So much this. Defiance was so damned awesome, especially after the mess that was LOK2, that I almost wanted to cry when I read about Amy leaving to go work at Naughty Dog, since I knew that the series was done, or at least that it would never have the same level of awesome, if slightly cluster-fscked, story.
