I played on Hard, and Life-2 doesn't help when you can be killed by a sniper in one shot. IIRC, the easier difficulties are much like you described, which is why I didn't enjoy them much.

Battlefield 1942's singleplayer campaign is another example where the player has as much health as the hordes of enemies. Anyone who achieved a no-deaths run through that campaign had something to be truly proud of.
Bleh. Insta-kill NPC snipers. Never liked those.

Suppose that would be why I personally didn't like Bad Company 1's campaign at all. That and the rather annoying amount of meandering around which becomes even more tedious when you have no vehicle. I played through it mainly because I liked hearing Sweetwater and Haggard go off on each other, though, so. Meh.

I think people need to understand the difference between a "realistic" game and a "believable" game. Playing MADDEN 542 for it's super realism (it even makes you sweat *fistbump*) means you might as well as go outside and play the real thing. People play games that they want to be "believable". They want to feel attached to the ambiance, the characters, the action; but that is not to say it has to play by our rules of physics. A RPG utilizing action points and health bars can imerse someone just as well as a FPS using a hub free configuration. Saying someone was mutated by genetic experimentation to regenerate health is a good tie in between story and mechanics.

I personally do not like the red screen as I am red green color deficient and half the time I don't even notice it is happening at all, until it's too late and I die. The mechanic itself is not bad though, it adds to the experience the author is trying to tell.

instead of visual indications, why not audio ones?

Anyone who played Zelda or Metroid Prime will still cower when they hear the "beep beep beep"

I miss health bars or even a little 100 like half life
The red screens are all very well but they do get annoying a lot especially like in killzone 2 where it goes all black and white when your really low on health.
