With E3 here, there's a ton of videos on the web that I want to watch. But despite all these different games being made by different developers, all the videos for M rated games have one thing in common. It's something that starts off as a minor annoyance, but eventually begins to grate on your very soul:

"Enter your age to view the video."

Am I the only one getting extremely sick of seeing these stupid things? It's annoying and absolutely pointless. Everyone under the age of 18 is simply going to lie anyways, which completely defeats the purpose of them to begin with. What do you guys think, would you like to see them go away or am I missing some valuable point that suddenly makes their existence worth it?

No, I got used to it a while ago. Just flip directly to the 'year' tab and scroll down. It's just a minor inconvenience.

It's just there so that they cannot get in legal trouble.

I have no issue with them. Sure, they are annoying, but I understand why they are there. It's not really something that I care too much about. Too small to be really toubling.

Its a way to advertise that doesn't have people on the company's back about advertising M games to small children. This way, the company can say, "Not our fault your child lied about his age. Maybe you should be a better parent."

Legally, you have to say that, so if little Timmy is traumatized he can't sue. The company just points to the warning and says, "If Timmy didn't lie, this wouldn't have happened!"

Because the US is so litigious, you can look at almost any retarded safety feature and think, "Who would get sued if this didn't exist?"

Its more of a liability than a deterrant. If some bad apples decide they will lie, the company can't be held responsible for anything bad they see.

It doesn't bug me. I do what Aby does when I'm too lazy to actually put in my real birth date.

I just do 1/1/(the oldest year there). Plus most sites remember that information so you don't have to put it in again till you restart your browser.... Or at least that's what happens to me.

I'd rather my favorite site doesn't shut down due to some overreacting parent suing the hell out of them because they couldn't watch their small child while hes on the computer.

Hehe actually had this a bout 4 times in a row today when trying to watch E3 trailers.
Yes it can be a annoying then but if its just one off i hardly notice.
Whats annoying is i didnt even see what the big deal was to cause the age section in the vids...
Seemed like standard game footage to me.

Exactly this. Who was the genius who fucked up badly enough that they have to put warning labels on lawnmowers that say "don't shove your hand down there because it'll fucking hurt"?

If they need this, why do porn streaming websites not? Why doesn't Zero Punctuation? Ah well. I'd at least like it if they could check the age if I've entered it when I make an account.

Porn streaming websites do often have them. It pops up and says if you are under 18 and choose to proceed we can not be held responsible. I think the reason ZP doesnt do it is because theres a difference between a M rated game and cussing.

I must say Marter, you have an awful habit of posting first, or close to it.

OT: I completly agree. It's pointless. As you've said, whoever is under age will just lie anyway. I guess though, that it's just there for legal reasons. As in, if something happens to an underager,on said website, they can fall back and say "Look! We had security (of sorts) in place."
