Hey guys -

CCP just released their promo vid for the new eve update...

I think this is the first time they've really tried to capture what the fleet battles are like... and as a person who frequents fleet battles in eve - This video is basically a dramatic retelling.

This really is what it's like at fleet battles in eve! except that they are usually bigger, with more ships, and there tend to be a hellavua lot more shouting on comms...

eg. If a curse appeared on grid, comms would be like "curse, CURSE! CURSE! GETT HIIIMMM! TACKLE!"

Also the Russians really are badass in eve... just google "The siege of C-J"

...and finally, yes, this is ingame graphics, just maxed out. But unless you have a serious rig, you wont be fighting 2000+ fleet battles on max graphic, coz yer machine will die...

Still... heres the epic video!!!!!!

no offense, but that looks like an advertisement for the game EVE, and advertising in the forums is looked down upon by the moderators

would this be classified as advertising?
What is it with everyone and the fucking paranoia about advertising? Adverts are obvious when they happen, but people can no longer share interesting finds or private stories without some idiot leaping in and yelling "OH TEH NOEZ!!!1eleven! ADVORTZ!" Let the guy show us a cool video.

Although the video is false advertising. That would happen once every billion years, without the sweeping camera, dramatic music and comms. You'd probably have similar action but with much more stopping and pausing and menues, and guys talking about the battle in a less awesome way.

Combat in EVE is not *dull* to me as I love turn-based combat but it is hardly sweeping space vistas and vast, majestic fleets of futuristic warriors in quite the way the video depicts it.

Ignore this idiot and his "looked down on by the moderators". I've been giving grammar-Nazi hairy eyeballs on this site and fighting trolls/spambots and telling off advertisers for a year and a half and while you do come off a bit advertisey because of the lavish praise you pour on the game, this is not an advert for EVE.

At any point does he try to get you to buy the game? Does he link you to a website where you can buy the game, or represent the makers of the game or do anything that actually falls under the purview of advertising? No. Go away camokkid and fight a real spammer.

I think that guy was just trolling...

ANYways... what I'm trying to tell you is that this really is what it's like- except if they had real comms on the video it would be very difficult to understand, coz there's alot of eve lingo- and stuff... also as I mentioned alot more shouting... just watch any fraps fleet battle on youtube...

As for the once every billion years... no... it happens alot, but in much bigger numbers... I've been fighting in systems with 1000+ for the last 2 weeks, down in TPAR... the fleets in this video are actually smaller that the ones normally seen ingame for things like taking stations n systems...

As for dramatic music? Well it's up to you to provide that; although the goons host goonradio while on ops to provide epic-ness...

and finally, there is no "pause" but there is ALOT of menus, and alot of information to take in at once... and often you have literally seconds to make a decision...

EDIT: It actually gets to the point where you *have* to do the fleet battles, just for the survival of your alliance, and sometimes it gets too much, you lose to many ships, and you run out of isk...

EDIT EDIT: Something I forgot to mention, the FC's (fleetcommanders) ie. the guys who are talking on comms, usually have seperate channels to talk to each other- because broadcasting something like "our fleet is a few jumps away" over comms is insane, because of spies and security.

Fair enough for the numbers part, but it isn't narmally this epic. It isn't "literal" pausing but you do have to look through plenty o' menus and play slowly/in a vague turn-based situation.

Plus the fights generally boil down to small little bits of fights with just one ship hitting another ship until a big ship comes along and everyone has to work together to take it out. The fights may be larger but the battles are still less interesting. The video looks like a scene from Star Wars, not EVE.

If that video was accurate, after the first fleet warp in, there would have been coms of guys talking about local sports teams and maybe playing a browser game while waiting 10 minutes to show up on grid due to the lag involved with massive fleet battles.

Really... it's not slow at all... it all happens so bloody fast most of the time. I believe that capital ship engagement are slugfests, but I'm not a capital ship pilot... but Support fleet battles, are incredibly frantic, and it isn't even remotely turn-based! I'm going to try to find a video of support fleets fighting... coz really... you have the wrong idea my friend...

Great video but nothing like Eve.
If you made a gray excel table around the video and hundreds of boring-ass icons everywhere, then we are talking about what it's like to play eve =p
The plants do look ace though, about time as well.
Yep... well that the whole "Staying alive" part!!! haha

Wow. That is epic. I have always thought about picking EVE up. What type of computer do you need to run it?

I realize I will be bored out my skull for the first 20 hours. Mining or something? I forget. But I will enjoy it because I happen to like doing mundane things such as that and the battles are a reward in themselves.
I'm afraid it would be alot more than 20 hours...

Eve is very difficult to get into unless you know someone already in it... or if that kind of game appeals to you.

I don't think ur PC needs to be great or w/e. How are your reading skills tho... coz like.. its a pretty bad learning curve...

That was... very pretty. Who the fuck needs star wars eh? :p

However, I've heard that Eve is a very boring game indeed full of grind and micro managing, so why does that video show epic space battles? False advertising?

I'll stick to Sins of a Solar Empire :D

It may look cool and interesting but it really REALLY isnt. All you do is click on enemy choose what distance you want to shoot him at and then watch as they go in circles shooting little lazers for a few minutes until one of them dies. All the missions are either go salvage this or go kill these guys, I even went 14 jumps away because I wanted to play with a friend and the missions there were exactly the same.

Cant really comment on the battles because during my 21 day trial ive never seen another player other then the afk ones at the stations.

Video looks awesome. I've never been involved in a fight that size though, mainly just trying to help my corp stay alive as ex-alliance-friends hit our installations.... Bastards.

Ahem.. But yeah Eve is a slow-burning game that you have to be able to accept waiting and planning long-term for. With Ventrilo (freeware) you can easily set up voice-coms, and with a semi-decent machine it can look very pretty (I'm running it with max graphics with a 9600)

Well some of the more impatient people have been demanding excursions into 0.0 for a while now and we're using wormholes a lot these days, so i guess. I'm interested to see what changes will happen to the faction ships
