I suppose this can kind of fall under the "unplayed Steam games list" category, but I jsut wanted to share. See if you had any similar stories, advice, etc...

I love fantasy. I love RPGs. I love epics. Therefore, I love epic fantsy RPGs. Sounds good, right? Well, there's my problem.
Sitting on my laptop right now is the entire Ultima series, and Baldur's Gate 1 & 2. I still have Temple of Elemental Evil gathering dust waiting to be downloaded, and I haven't touched Guild Wars 2 in months. I really enjoy the slower pace of these games, but don't have the time these days to really sink into them. And it's killing me.

Any related experiences, stories, advice, etc, etc...?

Well I got Fallout 1, 2, and Tactics on Steam about a 9 months ago, same with Oblivion GOTY on Xbox, and I've hardly touched any of them. I have like 6 hours in Oblivion, and I'll try to complete it, and I've only played Fallout 1 for about 3 hours. I haven't touched 2 or Tactics. Would it be a good idea to start Fallout 2 before finishing 1?

More importantly there is a great stream of new cRPGs coming from kickstarter
Shadowrun Returns
Wasteland 2
Torment: Tides of Numeria
Shroud of Avatar
Divinity Original Sin
Project Eternity
etc...

Seems like golden days for cRPG hardcore fans

Oh, right! I also want to pick up Torment when it comes out, as it sounds super-interesting. Another to add to the list of games I really don't need right now.

Well the second game's intro sums up everything that happened in the first game's main quest, so if you don't want to get spoiled, you might as well finish up the first one.

Quoted because that's the story of my gaming life.

Epic fantasy RPGs were always my favorites when I was younger.

But now I'm a parent with a full-time job and I just don't have the time for epic-length games unless it's the only thing I play with my scant offerings of gaming free time for over a month.

If I do such an undertaking, I have to be VERY choosy about which one I'm going to play.

Welcome to adulthood?

Epic scale games were and maybe still are my thing, I love the Baldur's Gates, the Civs, and the Total Wars.

Thing is between employment and family life I don't have time to play, even when I have the time to put 8 hours into a game I find something better to do.

Consider filling the void with more sandboxy/lower time investment games like FTL and Don't Starve. Shorter time investment and there's quite a bit of epicness if you have the imagination.

A little while ago, I decided to try some of the old school RPGs, starting with Fallout 1 & 2 and Baldur's Gate. Finished both Fallouts by now (absolutely fantastic games, both of them) and the first Baldur's Gate (loved it, the second bored me to tears within the first two or so hours). Now, I have developed a bit of a backlog containing both IceWind Dale games, Planescape: Torment, Temple of Elemental Evil and Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura. I still need to give Baldur's Gate II a second chance as well, but god damn it is the starting city a chore. Easily the worst parts of the first game were when you got hauled up in the big city, so they decide to start the second off with that shit. Grrr.

I'm really enjoying these older RPGs, and can see many areas that are much better than what we get now with modern RPGs, the dialogues, creativity and non-linearity especially, but god damn they are massive timesinks. It really does feel like an epic venture to complete one of them.

Bought Neverwinter Nights 2 from GOG back in August during one of their big D&D sales. Still haven't played it.

Pretty much this. Now that I'm not at university any more, I find I have much less time to play games. Considering that I love those old, humongous RPGs that you can sink dozens of hours into, it's not so easy to find the time or the motivation these days.

I'm also pro-Epic fantasy RPG when it comes to games, but I don't see much that interests me these days. I have to agree that having a game that you really want to play, but you don't have the time, is soul-wrenching. I tend to neglect my responsabilities to make room for games, which is why I sometimes considered putting down the hobby for good. RPG's in general seem to enthrall me to the point where I actually end up in serious trouble!
