Were they ever going to make Eldest a movie or did they just give up?
I don't think so. Fox said they would buy the rights from Knopf if the movie had a good run in the box office, which it didn't. Paolini also answered this question by saying, "I think we'll know after the opening weekend."
So it wouldn't be hard to assume that there isn't going to be one.

No offense, but the book was pretty blatantly ripped off from several sources, and while that alone is barely forgivable, it was so thick with purple prose and one-dimensional characters, I know many people who couldn't finish it.

The movie, though...
Oh god, the movie.
I had to turn my brain off during it. There's an Agony Booth review of the movie that goes through its' many flaws, and I recommend it to you, since you're a fan of the book and you hate the movie.

TL;DR:

I thought this very well written. I didn't like the movie, but I loathed the book. Still do.

Every good vs evil story is probably based off of something, get over it.
Nothing is original, and while i could ramble about the trillionth actionmovie-pie, or the bazillionth shooter samey, i enjoy the Crank´s that come along, bringing some unserrious fuckyou-entertainment.
But the Eragon movie?
I like dragons since im a Kid, but mainly the mature form that flies around killing shit with bad-ass firebreath, claws and fangs as big as your arms, so i´ve seen and liked quite alot of movies and books...Dragonheart, Reign of fire, Eragon...
I was introduced to the books and thought, "well, let´s give it a try."
Maybe my opinion is biased because i never paid for all of the books since i have a friend who borrows them for me, i liked them.
I liked them and you know whats the best I like?
Eragons friggin "Wtf why should I do this stuff anyway, screw it, i suck, Fuck you!" attitude.
He basically fails in anything, and while he manages to take on some Urgals simply by breaking them apart with his mind later in the books, there is always some crazy ************ whom he cannot beat, but mangles him, steals his stuff, kills his friends and so on.
Then i like the side storys about his brother, Roran, leading his villagers to safety and cracking some heads open with his sledgehammer along the way.
Then frankly, i like Saphira...she dislikes about anything exept Eragon and doesn´t understand Humans in anyway...for her, everything could be solved with claws, but later in the third book you realize that Christopher puts way to much effort into underlining that they have a special bond together.
They practically go emo without each other, and when they are together, when they aren´t fighting, their dialog reads like a teen-romance novel with added "awwwwwwwwww" factor...

I like the books, the movie was shit, so long so forth, i just wait for the forth book, since it was meant as a trilogy, but quite frankly, 3000 pages aren´t enough to seize the story.
I especialy wait for galbatorix to be defeated, since it´s been stated numerous times that he is unbeatable...
