I despise horror movies. They themselves aren't too bad, but I have absolutely no control over my imagination, so the next few days (especially if spent alone) are miserable from the experience.

So in that end, I didn't really like cabin. BUT I didn't dislike it, which alone puts it way ahead of any other horror movie I've seen.

well, it was the first half that I really hated, Once they got underground and all sorts of shit was coming up, it became more or less a standard action movie to me and I began to be entertained.

oh yeah, I didn't actually recognize thor till I read about it here *blush*

I'm surprised you didn't mention the ending, because that was the equivalent of Mass Effect 3's ending to me (though I haven't really seen the ME3 ending but saw Angry Joe's review of it).
"Big evil gods" (actual quote from the movie, though "big" might have been some different, similar adjective in the actual quote) KILL EVERYONE. As in EVERYONE DIES. As in NO HOPE. MOVIE ENDS. GAME OVER.

And no one does anything about it because one of the gods metaphorically kill you and everyone else right before the title shows up as a "The End". And that kind of apocalypse will happen again in that reality. It's like the god child in ME3 walking and explaining his circular plan of crushing hopes and dreams every age or so.

I'll try my best not to spoil anything (don't know how to do the whole spoiler thing warning box thing) but from just the ending, I want more, not just of the movie but of certain "things" in the movie, I want a movie for every one of these "certain things" i want more of them

How about this: when you can't talk about the movie, talk, more generally, about what it is. I don't want to be a hypocrite but since I actually don't know anything about the theory of movies, I'll use examples to explain what I mean.
For this review I would have enjoyed listening to a more thorough explanation of what plot twists are. What is a plot twist? (The closer to a definition the better.) What other things do movies with plot twists have in common? Why do they have these things in common?
Other general questions could be: how long is the movie? Is there any particula- NO, I don't what a particular reason, I want the general idea. When we have that, you could explain how that idea is implemented in this particular movie. Maybe it's not properly implemented, the explanation for that would also be interesting.
Basically, examples are not enough, examples are used to help people understand things but I barely know what there is to understand here.

I want the foundations, I think they are important and interesting. But if I care about the fundamentals then why do I post something that is fundamentally wrong? - This isn't M.I.T. open course ware, this is entertainment! The reason is that I think it would be more entertaining if I, and a great part of the rest of the audience, had some understanding.

If this isn't an option, please explain why it isn't an option :) I'll probably keep watching anyways.

Just saw it tonight and I loved how nuts the ending went! :D

Also, this article [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/moviebob/9561-Re-Take-The-Cabin] by Moviebob helped me appreciate it even more.

I saw this yesterday after hearing the first thirty seconds of bobs review and looking up a little bit about who was at the helm... God damn. Joss Whedon as writer, Cloverfield Director as Director.

Walking in I wasn't sure, but I quickly found myself loving the movie, and Bob is correct, the last 20 minutes or so is mindblowing.

Anywho, just like bob said, go see this, go see this now.

This is my new favorite film.
Mindblowing? I just got back from watching the movie about 20 minutes ago and I have to say going in completely blind with only the same 30 secs of Moviebobs review that it was...kinda mediocre to say the least. I am sorry but if you couldn't see how this story was going to play out within the first 20 mins with all the information given you have absolutely no imagination whatsoever. Sure the cast was good, the idea behind the movie overall was solid enough but I have seen (heard) better, crazier concepts in black metal songs that were more enjoyable and ominous.

I have been taking Moviebobs advice on a few movies and seen some of the ones he recommended but this time I felt he really blew this one out of proportion, it just felt way too predictable. I am pretty sure most horror movie fans will see the movie no matter what but I don't think any of them will be taken by surprise with the outcome, its all given away way too fast. I personally feel they should have just let the answers come out from the main characters exploration and not given away within the first 20 mins. I consider myself a fan of Whedons past work and think he definitely makes some interesting shows but this movie just didn't do much for me.
I'm not saying I couldn't see what was going to happen, I called it too, what I was most impressed with and was most "omfg mind blown" about was the execution, they melded everything really well and with the final moments of the film (I'm talking last five minutes or so) I was especially impressed by the creativity. The entire third act with all of its nonsense (including unicorns) was very fun and completely changes the feel of the movie, which was great for me.

I think I may have appreciated on some other levels for being a film student and a massive (and I do mean massive!) fan of horror, and I can see how one may think it was mediocre, but I'll have to personally, respectfully, disagree.

just saw the movie today, since it came out last week in hong kong.
it was really good. it sure reminded me of the "evil dead" series but it changed quickly to a totally different story line.
the last 20min were really gory as hell and surely creative with all the creatures they throw at you. reminded me a tiny bit of "13 ghosts".
also the ending is something you dont expect either. so yeah, i had a good time watching it :)

Inception is a fair comparison. It blows past the "twist" and becomes a ride enjoying the concept. Of course you see it coming, the twist is shown in the first scene, it is seeing the concept and implications unfold.

I do not like horror films.

I had a great time watching "Cabin in the Woods", the most I've been pleasantly surprised by a film in a long time.

Who else is going to get the DVD and do hundreds of freeze frames on the cellar objects and their links?

I never was a fan of horror movies, but after seeing Fran Kranz in Dollhouse and then watching Tucker & Dale Vs Evil (because of Alan Tudyk) I think I'll be watching Cabin in the Woods real soon lol

This movie was obsessively over the top, corney and full of cliche...
...and is epically hilarious. The mockery it shows is amazing! I went in expecting another lame, low budget horror and laughed like mad with the rest of the viewers. Even people I know who don't like horror had so much fun.

If your looking for a good movie to watch with friends, it's a great one to go see.

Late review but... meh. Just seen it, I didn't love it. I don't really know why. Was it because I expected so much from it? Was it because I've seen a few GREAT Korean movies lately? Was it because Marijuana is again shown in a favorable way? Was it because I'm sooo tired of zombies and vampires? No idea. It's done nicely, with solid acting, a few twists here and there, a lot of satisfyingly predictable moments and many wink-wink-nudge-nudge moments. But it's not memorable. And it ought to have been, judging by how many correct buttons it has managed to push. At some points it reminded me about District 9 (in the "let's do the same story but waaaay differently" department). But even Troll Hunter was done better.

Since a few talked about "The Village", yeah, that was a memorable movie. The last Hollywood movie I actually give a damn about is "Rise of the Planet of the Apes", while the last awesome movie, for me, was "Shutter Island". What's wrong with you Hollywood? What happened to good old film-making? From the looks of it, it has moved to South Korea lately, after taking a long detour through the UK.
