My first thought, having seen the original in the theater, is that this is the same type of movie that my generation grew up with. Monsters, a hero, a heroine and all the "good stuff" that we used to watch on Saturday mornings or (if you grew up in the tri-state area of N.Y., N.J. and Ct.) the 4:30 movie.

Clash of the Titans sort of "is what it is". It is the stuff of young kids' adventure fantasies and as such has to be judged on that merit.

So, having said that, and having seen this remake, this "could" have been great. Bob is correct in that there just isn't much for us to grab on to as far as us caring for the characters.

And some of the characters do indeed feel added on. For no reason.Calibos does feel tacked on and the djinn sorcerer also feels tacked on. Calibos shouldn't have been handled this way as he is actually important in the first movie. There is a sort of comedic duo of fighters who also come along but who also feel tacked on.

Io is also tacked on but gemma arterton is just so damn beautiful (in my opinion) that I didn't mind. However, because of her inclusion Andromeda sort of suffers a back seat.

This movie suffers from writers who made changes for no reason whatsoever. And to add insult to injury we don't see why humanity is pissed at the gods. We are "told" that they are. It isn't until a bit into the film we get to see why Perseus has an axe to grind.

It's as if they forgot to include or develop proper motivation and purpose for most of the characters.

So, in the end I enjoyed the film because I brought my 13 year old self and had a blast. But my 42 year old self couldn't help but think that the movie needed to be tightened up a bit, remove Liam Neeson's bad armor, actually include Poseidon in some of it (as my girlfriend said, he seems important to the whole thing yet he really is never mentioned except for the start). Also there was no need to use Hades as they did.

If you like fun monster movies go see it in 2d. If you are looking for incredible writing, mythology that makes sense and great movie composition then don't bother because you will be disappointed.

When I first heard of CotT remake my feeling was that the original doesn't really need a remake, and probably they would be better off just re-releasing the original, because even though the special effects are old, they got the job done, and it was just a good movie. It might have been a "B- movie," but it scores an easy "A" on the "B- movie" test. It was near perfect for being what it was.

That said, I'll probably see this one too, and nice review.

C+ at best I agree with, and thats only if you are part of the Michael Bay fanbase.
As someone who knows classics even slightly, this really annoys me.
The mythological part of this is total crap. I can sum this up by saying "The Kraken is from Norse mythology and played no part in Greek whatsoever. If they wanted the sea monster that was going to eat Andromeda as a sacrifice they wanted Cetus-A FISH.
The movie looks like they wanted transformers only with mythological creatures

... Where the hell does a giant scorpion fit into ancient Greek lore? I understand the giant crab that attacked Hercules, but never ran across a mention of any scorpions?
The movie murders Greek mythology. Fuck giant scorpions; they used the Kraken, a Norse creation, in a movie featuring Greek mythology. And Zeus has a bald eagle for a pet. In Greece.

I felt that the flick was a piece of shit, but that's just me.

Great review as always!
It's always good to hear someone defending the old willy wonka for a change! I for one, am tired of Tim Burton.

I've been hearing an awful lot about the poor quality of the 3D for this one- it actually gave one of my friends a headache.

Fair review - saw it in 2D. Wasn't bad but definitely not great. Felt bad though - the guy who had bought the tickets to see it worked for the company that made the scorpions!

What is with the shakey-cam fight scenes? It's unbelievably incoherent. Also, did anyone else find it weird that Sam Worthington is the only one with a shaved haircut?

Since you bring up the point about editing, can we get a re-review if they do a Director's Cut on DVD/Blu-Ray?

I have to agree with Bob on this one. It isn't a bad movie, but it certainly isn't a good movie.

A lot of the set pieces are oddities too. There is a scene early in the movie where Perseus pulls the mechanized owl from the first movie, out of a crate where he sheepishly asks 'what's this?" and the stoic guy tells him to leave it. The scene was completely worthless and a microscopically thin play on nostalgia.

Other than that, it had some good action scenes...

I saw the movie, and thought it was average. As far as action movies go, it really needed some character developement.
Once Zeus showed up any plot holes and straight up nonsense were waved away by "A Wizard Did It", or in this case "Liam Neeson Did It".

Saw the movie today, I'm not all that sold by the 3-D in fact the movie was dark enough most of the time that I could take off the glasses and actually watch it without being blinded by the red, green, and whatever other technocolor they have in there. Good movie, enjoyed the little cameo the mechanical owl from the original made. I enjoyed the new one more than the original more or less because of, how MovieBob put it cheesy. Good review nonetheless, I got kinda annoyed how it was Persueus and Io instead of Perseus and Andromeda though.

Saw the movie, was bad.

Militant Atheism? Western moviemaking always takes stabs at greek religion... Remember the Jason and the argonauts movie? "The gods are fickle, in time all men shall learn to do without them."

Or what about that horrible movie Troy? Hector was a faithless individual, no gods appear on the battlefield...

The only good movie I remember representing greek gods was The Odyssey with armad asante (sp?), the rest is some lameass concession or conspiracy to christianity to take no other fake religion serious except their fake religion.

0.o From the snippets I have been provided the elder of these movies looks like a half rate picture, and the new movie looks like a load of fun.

If I had not, but an hour ago, been told by a friend that the movie was great, and worth watching at LEAST once, I would let this pass unharried, however, I did, and thus cannot.

Great review. I was going to see this film with some friend, but then we all changed our minds & went to see Kick Ass- could you please review that film at some point so I can determine as to whether this was a mistake? (I highly doubt that though, as I REALLY liked Kick Ass).

Well, technically, there was Scorpio, a giant...scorpion, as it were, that killed the great hunter and friend of Artemis, Orion. They are both constellations. I always assumed that the scorpion in the trailer was Scorpio, but then I saw that there were multiple ones, and then I totally didn't get it.

As for eagles, well, there's this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eagle#Species
The point being that eagles aren't exclusive to America; I don't know whether the one in the movie was a bald eagle, but keep in mind that the Romans used some sort of eagle as their standard.

But the Kraken? Yeah, that's total bullshit. Does the movie even mention Poseidon? Also, Hollywood, Hades wasn't goddamn evil. Death does not equal bad, certainly not in that culture; if anything, Hades was the most morally neutral of all the gods in the pantheon.

I saw this movie the other day and it was horrible. I haaaated it. And hell, I didn't even like the old one, but this new one was a piece of crap! The mythology is all screwed it to the point where it resembles a medieval movie more than a greek mythology one and the writing was atrocious. Every one-liner made me laugh it was delivered with so much cheese factor. It wasn't even so-bad-it's-okay, it was just bad.

Nice review though, Bob. I guess I just didn't like it as much as you did.

Liam Nesson as Zeus was rockin' though.

To be fair, the eagle was Zeus's symbol (or maybe it was Jupiter's) though you are right, it wouldn't have been bald.
