Sold! Checking movie times!
Seriously, I've been wanting to see this since I saw the first teasers.
That wasn't a teaser for it, that was a short film by Neill Blomkamp that was the genesis for what became District 9. In the film, those tubes from the sky don't exist and Viccus isn't one of the soldiers, he's an office worker.
I wasn't talking about the short film.
I was talking about the teaser trailers. You know, the ones that play in movies theaters before a movie?
I haven't even seen the short film (yet).

Ah, my aplologies, I thought you were calling Alive In Joberg a teaser trailer.
That was the start of District 9.

I still want a movie of Halo.

The way to do it is as a trilogy covering the history of the Covenant, opening with the war between all the alien species pre-Covenant (i.e. no Marines at that point), then the Prophets unification of them all as they seek the Forerunner rings. The rest of the first movie documents how an Elite rises through the ranks, eventually being promoted to Gold Elite as a reward for his courage and leadership in the Fall of Reach. So, we see the Humans through Covenant eyes, giving a supplementary dimension to the game's story-line (which is pointless to recapitulate).

The second film follows this alien anti-hero through his character arc, showing how he becomes the Arbiter. (i.e. parts of Halo 2)

The final film has him paired with Master Chief. This allows you to have extended sequences of action where Master Chief is characteristically silent that work dramatically, because the Arbiter is speaking... moving the plot along, providing necessary exposition. This culminates in his assassination of the Prophet.

- this is only a rough sketch as I haven't read any of the books. The main point I'm trying to demonstrate is that a Halo trilogy could be made if done from a fresh dramatic perspective. Also, it is necessary to think big (3 films) as all the costs of props, etc could be spread over all the live-action movies and Peter Jackson could film the principle photography in one go in New Zealand (e.g. Halo-ish landscapes) for a whole year, with Neill Blomkamp involved in pre/post production and handling the 2nd unit, technical stuff. This is because it would be easier to get the money for a Sci-Fi "Lord of the Rings" with Peter Jackson directing it.

I was going to see this movie this past Saturday but thirty minutes into the movie some idiots doing construction work in a neighboring building hit the sprinkler system wiring in the movie theater bringing the movie to a grinding halt with sirens and some theater rooms getting a clothed bath and we had to stand outside the theater for 40 minutes before we even found out what happened and then the water damage would prevent any further screenings for that day. We got re-admission tickets but don't have any free time to get back to a theater until Tuesday night. The anticipation is killing me! Now seeing all these praises online just makes the wait even harder.

I hate transformers and thought GI joe was bad but not horrible like transformers and I liked Star trek damnit! The plot was bad maybe not as bad as soylent commando's(bionic commando) but the dialog and acting was there yes it was a action flick but a above average action flick.

Halo would be great if done right...but......... will they even bother.....

This movie was pretty damned good. I really liked the ending the most. I was kind of hoping that the whole "we're making it out to be like a documentary" type feeling would go away, but that's ok. It didn't subtract from the movie at all. Some parts of the movie are predictable, but I'm not gonna toss out any spoilers.

Edit: I would also like to point out that this movie pretty much depicts how any government would act in the case of aliens being on Earth. There'd be lots of secrets and our "leaders" would only want to study their technology at any cost.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
a better way to start this review would have been to not rag on a popular fps game since it tends to already establish the reviewer as a douch

This movie sucked. It tried to be intelligent the first twenty minutes with the documentary stuff, got bored, and then jumped into pointless sci-fi bullshit with people's heads exploding. I was not impressed.

Yet again, with all the incredibly awesome, intelligent, interesting movies - this has not been advertised in the UK at ALL, and is not being shown in my local cinema.
Only heard about this THIS WEEK.

I want to see it, and can't. *sigh*

I saw this movie last night. No lie, it was a good movie, but I'm gonna shoot for a 8/10 rating on this one...Since to be perfectly honest, his "action-packed" statement, was a bit overzealous. The last 1/3 of the movie is action packed..the rest is mostly a few beating scenes and the occasional gunshot or 2. Story was great, action was great, the half-life reference was great(if your a half-life fan you'll know what I'm talking about when you see it). It was even comedic in the beginning. All in all, good movie. Recommended

District 9

This week MovieBob takes a look at the much anticipated District 9.

Watch Video
Your movie review are incredibly patronising. You are a movie reviewer, not a world class critic, you are not the only person who understands and enjoys films! Stop ranting about movie-goers like they are some kind of second class people who can't grasp the amazing world of cinema. It is literature that contains the great stories and so many of them.

I've got a question, you claim this movie is 'intelligent'. I haven't seen it and don't know much about it other than what I have seen in the trailer. From what I can see it lacks any subtlety and has no logical basis.

These are aliens who have built City sized ships capable of interstellar travel which must have come many light-years and we somehow manage to keep them oppressed with concrete blocks, barbed wire and some crappy little Mechs. Tell me how is that in any way consistent let alone, intelligent?

Well, I didn't finish watching this video 'review' and I won't watch any more of them.

Regarding Budgets

$200mil Transformer 2
$170 million GI Joe
$200 million Terminator Salvation
$150 million Star Trek

$30 Million District 9

Seriously a $30 million budget can do that, and you needed $150-$200mil for the other summer movies wtf is this shit?

It has some of the best special effects & acting ive seen this year for 1/5th the cost

I saw the movie it was awesome, also at the end Peter Jackson does a cameo as an MNU PMC and gets zaped by the supergun.

It's douchebag you misogynist. Why don't you head back over to Xbox Live for even more people to ignore your pathetic insults.

I have a question, would you like this movie if it wasn't somewhat 'independent'? Also, I get the real life scenario the film is referencing, it's hardly subtle. The fact is that its grasp of sci-fi seems quite weak.

Well, in the context of the film-proper...
The ship itself is a derelict wreck of some sort, and most of the aliens inside are "worker class" drones who are starving, malnourished, don't evidence much self-empowering indignation and don't fully understand their own higher-technology.

Saw it opening night at the request of a friend (I wanted to see it, but I'm against $11 movie prices.), and it was awesome. Definitely the best movie this year. (Waiting to see if Quentin can top it next week with Inglorious Bastards.) Everyone should see this movie.

But...

Why do people hate Halo so much? I'm not too keen on the idea of a movie because of the track record of game based movies, but if made properly (which is exactly what would have happened if those two guys had done it), it would have been awesome. I'll bet none of the people who say Halo is bland and unoriginal have ever (yes, I'm going to say it) READ THE BOOKS. I thought Halo's story sucked too until I read Eric Nylund's novels. They make you honestly care about John (the Master Chief) and Cortana. They also put the aliens' motivations in perspective.

But, then again, no one cares what I have to say. The same people are going to keep their heads firmly planted up their asses and continue to criticize Halo not based on merits, but based on an unreasonable dislike for its unparalleled success. (Just because bros and obnoxious children like it too, doesn't make it suck.)
