So what's the film the 3 guys at the end are referencing? So can't be bothered to keep up with the unfunny deluge of R rated 'comedies'.

Man, the Facebook commenters really didn't like the swipe at Kevin Smith. I'm not for or against the guy personally, but I don't see how owning a comic book store and being a self-proclaimed nerd should offer Smith any sort of protection from criticism, any more than Bay should have protection from American critics because his films are rabidly pro-America.
OT: Just out of curiosity, has any Escapist actually had to move because of a freeway being built? It's something that I see pop up in movies and TV shows from the 80's and 90's all the time, but I've never seen it happen in real life (and I live in Ottawa, which is constantly expanding and running new roads). The worst I can think of is a couple lots being removed, not an entire neighbourhood.

Wow, it seems Bob really dug this movie. Incidentally, this review was the first time I'd heard of it so I decided to check what average it has on IMDB and I was rather surprised to see it at a less-than-stellar 5.8 at the time of writing.

I have really young cousins visiting who might like this movie a lot more than my jaded 9 year old cousin[don't ask me how he got that way 
] and I'm tempted to want to take them to see this movie now.
I didn't think to much of it the first time I saw this movie and no one was really talking about it when we saw this movie. In fact, I had forgotten that I had seen a movie that day, but it's inoffensive movie and I was relatively engaged all the way through, but I felt like the movie took a dip when the alien finally came in. It's kind of unfortunate how the thing I was most excited about became the least interesting thing about the story. The drama felt kind of forced to me when they were off to collect the magic trinkets to help the Robot like it was video game(the sort of plot structure where it goes "And then this happened and then this happened, etc"
Taking younger kids to see this movie might make the experience better for me though. It'd be nice to capture the movie magic that I once felt with a younger audience.

I would like to see this movie, but I hate the 'home-made movie' style of filming. It makes me nauseous. Is the whole movie done that way, or just parts of it?
You know, when I was 10, my best friend moved away from my area (to 90 miles away, but as a child in 1999 that's literally the same as dying). I have never seen him since.
I still get tormenting dreams about it.
So yes... if I watched that film I would probably get sucked in, because I can completely bloody related to the impending fear of never seeing your best friend(s) ever again*.
*Granted now they have technology so they can Skype each other and Steam Co-Op. I mean, their social problems aren't as bad as if they happened 15 years ago, it still bloody sucks massively.
That's the closest thing that's happened where I live in recent memory.
Granted this is a reservoir and not a motorway, and a lot more political.

Bob has convinced me to eventually give this movie a chance, I'll probably check it out when it gets released on DVD. From the trailers I saw it looked like it was just trying way too hard to be modern E.T. like Super 8.

You don't have to live with your family, you can drink, you can swear, you can have sex with people with relatively little hassle beyond the dating scene itself, and you can buy video games and watch pornography without worrying about your parents bothering you. It's awesome. There should be more movies about that.

That kind of generational disconnect is one of the reasons I never got into movies like The Breakfast Club, which are considered by my parents' generation to be the height of social commentary and speaking to their experiences. My high school experience, simply enough, doesn't line up with the experiences being referenced in Breakfast Club. I can only imagine how weird it would be for an even younger audience, who doesn't even have the holdover touchstones of that kind of class- or interest-based granularity, where someone is either a jock or a nerd or a goth or a punk or a preppy girl.
But you do have to deal with things like jobs you don't necessarily like, worries about bills and obligations, the isolation that comes from not constantly being around hundreds of people of roughly the same age with at least some of the same interests. Maybe there's a broader societal problem with the loss of "I wish I were an adult" escapist fantasies, but speaking as an adult I can also see the appeal of "weren't things awesome when I had most of the access to video games and movies, but I didn't have to worry about money?"teamcharlie said:
