I enjoyed Heavy Metal. It was kinda goofy, corny, and not paticularly good quality but it was quite alot of fun to watch given it's randomness. I read Heavy metal magazines on and off and they're much the same as the movie.

And yes Heavy Metal 2000 was balls. Looked bad, story was terrible, and the boobs looked ugly.

I think Bakshi is a fascinating and important figure in animation history who - if only animation was as "easy" (comparitively) to produce independently in his day as it is now - would have been much more successful. However, looking at his career as a whole I'd inclined to conclude that he's also an example of an artist who's passion greatly exceeds his ability. Of all his work, I think only "Wizards" and his Mighty Mouse cartoon in the 80s stand on their own without serious technical and storytelling flaws. His technical skill and vision are unquestionable (despite it's ultimately empty story, the sheer artistry of "Fire & Ice" is breathtaking) but... "undisciplined," is the word I'd use. Still, I'll seek out and watch ANYTHING he's done, which is something I can't say for some of his more "consistent" peers.

I'm happy to hear my loyalty to Bakshi isn't mislead. I also enjoy the work of Ryan Larkin, it's a shame there's just so little of it, rest his soul.

It's also a great shame the only people who'll produce American hand drawn animation on a movie scale are companies like Disney, who rehash the same dry, overuses ideas, using the same styles and formats, only to result in making an embarrassingly large amounts of money for a movie we've already seen a million times. Admittedly, I haven't seen their latest film yet, so maybe The Princess and The Frog will prove me wrong... yeah, and maybe monkeys will fly out my butt.

There's just no way a dry Disney movie will compare to the wild out there generation of Ralph Bakshi, who gave us such great mind-fucks like Heavy Traffic, cartoons that weren't afraid of trial and error, to experiment and explore possibility. Hell, we still had that spark of creativity all the way through the 90s too, up until 3D animation and Anime stuck their big ugly butts in our faces.

Well alot of "people" thought the transformers movies were good. is it any suprise that average taste hasnt changed over the years?

The original movie (Eric Idle, Orson Welles) was good. It's just as soon as they made it "popular", they lost the plot and replaced it with Mugging Fecks ass.

I just finished watching the film for giggles and decided to watch this review again, and now having actually seen the movie I can generally say that yeah it was pretty bad. The stories didn't string together very well at all, esp. when you go from space station in the future to somewhere during World War II.

From one 1981 birth to another, you got this one totally right, Bob (though my favorite segment was Capt. Stern and Hanover Fist, but that's just because I'm a Berni Wrightson fan).

It is true that porn is so abundant and readily available today, these whippersnappers... er, kids (goddammit) have no perspective. It's true that probably more than a few films get some undeserved attention because of their mature content. But, yeah, if I want to show someone some good underground and nostalgic animation, it's Fire & Ice all the way.

Born in 1972. This movie was awesome when I first saw it. Granted now when I watch it I can see all of its flaws, I could see them back then too but it was still cool. I still get a kick out of watching it now.

I haven't seen Heavy Metal, but after hearing from this review that it was done by the National Lampoon guys, it doesn't suprise me. Now of days, all the recent National Lampoon movies that come out on dvd have "boob flash" scenes, including it's imitators like the American Pie movie series. Heck, the majority of them do simply straight to dvd films now, so I guess the whole "teen movie/boobie flash" film genre has quite died down quite a bit. Largely due to all what MovieBob said. But I do sympathize with those dudes out there who worked hard to see a pair of knockers back in those days. I was born in 1985, and to see the goods back in my day, you pretty much had to unscamble Showtime and Cinemax late at night to see them while the folks were asleep, or somehow get and see a movie that had a naked chick in it for at least a second. None the less, I do understand the South Park joke now. Thanks for the good review MovieBob.

I was born in 1980 so my memories of childhood pubescent beginnings were trying to watch scrambled spice channel and oh the glory days of how movies with violenve, nudity, and/or sex were watched if you could sneak out of your room and watch TV in the middle of the night without waking your parents. There were the classic Chinese Kung-Fu movies and TV cut R-rated films be they horror or sexploitation.
