I didn't really think Repo! was quite that obscure, honestly it struck me as kind of one of those movies that was meant to appeal to the cult crowd and honestly I preferred the Rock Opera set up to a straight up action flick mostly because a concept like organ removal and financing is something that can never really be said with a straight face, it's just to absurd to be imagined. Hence Repo! was kind of aware of this and decided to take a complete absurdist approach by making it a rock opera, hence I value it over Repo-men.
Seriously, I think a Repo man gleefully singing about his 'thankless job' while gutting someone is more of an enjoyable spectacle than a straight up ruthless thug.
That was kind of why I liked Repo! a lot more and besides it really was the exact same concept barely even dressed up in Repo-men. Repo-men wasn't just a faithful version of a classic story, no, if you ask me it was just the concept as Repo! (Repo! admittedly did not come up with it first, that was a movie called Brazil I think, I just reckon Repo! did more interesting things with the forumla)rehashed into something else without any of the real charm.
Bottom line, REPO! was obviously aiming at being a cult movie, hence I can't blame you if you didn't like it, in some respects if the reviews are any indication you either do or don't like it, I can respect that. I'm just saying that it was a popular cult movie and thus a lot of people liked it and would note the concept.
Just the concept mind you, the actual plot of REPO! plays out more like the classic Shakespearian Opera of betrayal, love, loss, inheritance and a final bloody showdown complete with a darkly charismatic narrator. Whereas Repo-men follows along a more personal conflict about the civilian perspective of the corporation itself rather then simply who gets to control it.
I did like that sarcastic comment about the plot of Hot Tub Time Machine being similar to a martial arts movie about fighting Kangaroos though let's give Repo some credit, it's nowhere near that campy or strange.... plus Repo is only three years old, so it's still a lot more recent in the public's memory.
Sorry if this seems a little preachy, I certainly did not mean it too, just figured I would explain my position, still thought it was a great review and I still respect your capacity as a reviewer as you clearly know what you are talking about on most things even if I do occassionally have to disagree.
