Pretty sure I just read an interview with the director where he criticized the earlier movies for devolving into exactly what Bob says he misses: a bunch of set pieces and sweet location shots that don't serve characterization at all. I understand the idea of having one good series that's helmed by a cipher so you can imagine yourself in the action more intensely, but that never really worked for me. As Bob said, it became a series of rehashes of the same template. The question is, can you make a 20-film series where the fact that it's the same main character in all of them is actually important? Honestly, I don't see how you can.

They should take Spoony's idea and just outright state that "James Bond" is a codename held by several agents over many decades. Make it a mantle, an honor, and examine what happens when you lump that pressure on top of everything else the secret agent has to do.

Of course, then people will know you're an agent the minute you call yourself James Bond, but...

good times; the problem with Bond as a character is that he was written by essentially a pulp writer. Fleming was influential, but let's not pretend everything he did was GOOD. Bond exists in that same wish-fulfillment fantasy of characters like John Carter and Sherlock Holmes.

And seriously Bob, cut it out with the goddamned lowblows at Nolan and Batman, it's gotten old.

Did you see the Bane/Bat fight? It was fairly lame(cough).

Arnold is...wait, what? Bob are you sure you didn't get your info wrong on that one? Maybe he's just going to be in a Discworld movie as Cohen the Barbarian? Also yes: Jurassic Park 3D!? They can have my money right now. As for Skyfall: I'm not into Bond at all and am probably passing this one up.

That's part of what I thought Craig's Bond was missing, was that he was just kind of flat. He never smiled, he never seemed to have that swagger, especially in QoS, he was just kind of a cardboard cutout. Judging by the review, he's got it back for now.

Great review, no enthusiasm on Bob's part. Seriously Bob, in the past few reviews I can't tell where the criticism starts and the praise ends. You could not be more deadpan if you were actually dead.

I have not seen Casino or Quantum. Will this still make sense to me if I check it out?

OT This looks awesome. Assuming I don't need to catch the previous ones, this will be watched this week.

Arnold Schwarzenegger, 65 year-old former Governor of California, will return to the role of Conan The Barbarian in 2014. This is a thing that is actually supposed to happen. Really.
Will happen, perhaps. Likely to happen. Slated to happen.

Supposed to happen?... Might be a bit of a stretch.

I always thought that this was a brilliant way to explain the many different faces of Bond. In my opinion, they should also extend it to M, Q and the others as well.

Are all the Bonds in continuity with one another?
Or are they rebooted with each new actor?

Glad to hear the movie was good. You really sounded happy about that, Bob.

As for the Schwatzenegger thing. Well, worst case scenario we at least get to here you say Schwatzenegger a lot more. ;)

I was going to skip it without a second thought, but this glowing review has planted seeds of doubt.

Well, M and Q really are supposed to be codenames that may be held by a succession of different people. I always assumed Q just stood for "quartermaster".

Fun fact, the Chief of the Secret Intelligence Service (aka MI6) is always codenamed C.

It's never brought up. The fan theory is that "James Bond" is just a code name which each new agent takes on, along with the 007 title (hence the different actors with the same name). That theory isn't correct though. There is only meant to be one real James Bond, and all the actors are meant to be the same guy.

Most of the movies lack any sense of interconnectivity* anyway, so it isn't really meant to be noticed. They're built to be interchangeable.

*with the exception of Jaws, a leg injury and the most recent trilogy.

C'mon Bob

It's a not a great movie, the first 60 min are maybe the worst in Bond history and the (car) chase at the start of the movie is terrible but when Javier Bardem comes into play the movie gets really good, really fast.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
This seems like a good time to post this.
The most impressive thing about this was that it was completed like 3 or 4 hours after the trailer was initially shown.
